I played it on PC with full RT at Ultra-wide at launch, and if any game can shine with that kind of up-lift, it's this one. Legitimately some of the best visuals I've ever seen in a game. The rendering on the MC blows everything else out of the water in terms of photo-realism.

The game itself? Look, it's probably a 6/10 - if I never have another slug thing jumping out of a chest at me it'll be too soon, the boss fights are fucking atrocious, and the moment-to-moment combat ranges from solid to disgraceful. But man, those visuals...

I am not sure this IP is as dead as people are thinking. Why would you update a game to support a new console if it flopped that bad? For comparison, Dead Space remake is not getting a PRO patch as far as i know.
To be fair, it sold over 2mil in 3 weeks when news outlets called it a flop, it has continued to sell and has probably got a good number of sales for a new horror IP.
But it didn't meet the expectations that publisher expected at launch of 5mil
Which was unrealistic to begin with.
it sold better then Dead Space at launch but what those numbers are now I don't know.
But you do have a excellent point.

Looking Look Around GIF by Chenayder

" Dynamic resolution scaling is used too, with pixel counts between 1440p and 1728p being the most common. It seems highly variable but Unreal's temporal upsampling helps clean up the final image and it looks sharp in each mode on a 4K display."

It's nothing special about taking something that already looked good and making it look great. Whose going to pound their chest over that. Turning something bad into something good is the real test. Stop try to prop up games like this, Last Of Us, and R&C as proof of concept that PSSR works. They already look good. If we are going by that standard then FSR works just fine.

What about Final Fantasy? Or is this page dedicated to some weird damage control?

Final Fantasy Rebirth has good result with the temporal instability rearing it's head due to the lower resolution input. Oliver from DF say it's very apparent on fine detail objects like foliage and finishes by saying the Performance Mode of the Pro is temporally more unstable then the Quality Mode of the OG PS5.

This is a great example of the 'polishing a turd' metaphor. Bad, but good looking game, now looks even better.

Damn shame the underlying game doesn't live up to the tech, even on the base version. And we're likely never going to see them improve on this, give it a Dead Space 1 -> Dead Space 2 kind of progression.

I downloaded the game again and did some tests on my RTX4080S. There is no way the PS5P can run this game with RT at 8K, even at 30fps.

  • 5K TAA native fullRT 47fps scene 1, 50fps scene 2
  • 5K FSR2 Quality fullRT, 70fps, 78fps
  • 4K TAA native fullRT 77fps, 86fps
  • 4K FSR2 Quality fullRT 102fps, 117fps
  • 4K TAA native Raster (no RT), 135fps, 126fps
  • 4K FSR2 Quality Raster, 160fps, 152fps

I'm curious about something, instead of shooting for those super high resolutions, why didn't they just try to get closer to the maximum graphics on PC? Ultra ray tracing is insanely demanding, so I doubt they're using that here. This means the graphics quality hasn't improved dramatically. The IQ already looked great on the OG PS5, didn't it? I feel those GPU resources would have been better spent pushing the visuals instead of the pixel count.

It could do 1440p upscaled to 8K, equivalent to DLSS Ultra Performance.

Ah, so we’re back to the cherry picking of what others say. It’s the next-gen OT all over again.

Wasn't this (and Deadspace) a John review? They were his picks.
It was, but in their weekly Direct they talked about it and Alex was almost in tears because how it ran on PC at the time, and went on a rant how it not fair 😂
I'm just trying to picture his response to this 😂
But it fixed on PC now anyway so..¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is the kind of result I'm looking for. Maybe not the specific game I'm looking to have this result, but this seems to be a good example of what PS5 Pro can do and it is in line with what Mark Cerny said. Quality mode graphics but with performance mode frame rates.

So.....what's the problem? I mean....if this is about "pounding chests" either way then folks have really lost their way.

Not true. Perhaps there's more appreciation in instances where games with bad IQ are resolved with new hardware, but from a purely academic and technical perspective, the possibility of boosting games with heavy use of RT to upscaled 8k30 and 4k60 on a console (more so with impressive internal res of 1440p-1728p as you highlighted) is impressive in it's own right, proven by the fact that such a suggestion would have been considered utter nonsense and mocked to oblivion by Digital Foundry. If you're honest, you will agree.

I don't think people are pounding their chest, people are just happy with the update and there's a few that...well

Only played in Performance 4K 60fps RT, but while both shadows and reflections are (finally) added at 60fps, they don't match the max RT quality on PC.
They look good, but I remember noticing one hanging inmate with clear detail in the PC reflections, and was just barely noticeable here on PS5. At least in this Mode.
As far as I know however RT quality is the only difference between PC and PS5 version.. and everyone is reporting the 8K mode looking amazing so maybe they did the right choice here as reflections look good anyway.

Had to disable motion blur right away though as it's an extremely heavy and distracting implementation at 60fps, and I'm not the biggest fan of PBR in this game, it's almost as if there's no PBR at all to me as every material reacts more or less the same way, but looks good overall, and it's a great update because having both RT reflections and shadows at 60fps when there were none before is one massive upgrade.

Yeah I could see in Corporal.Hicks Corporal.Hicks shots there was a difference on some of the textures being slightly sharper, although the leather on his Jacket looked better on Pro oddly enough, but his collar didn't.
They obviously optimise settings and everything isn't as high as you can get on PC, but it's a little difference which gets us to that target.
I did try the 4k60fps but damn even on a 4K TV you can see the difference with the 8K Mode
It just looks so damn clean and solid/stable.
Btw nice shots bro 👍

My last year high end pc gaming was 2021 and I remember how negligible high to ultra settings were in most games why crank settings 90% of people won't notice when you can headline with """8k""""

Pretty sure it's due to the 4K/60fps Mode not being really 4K, unlike the downsampled 6K one.
I feel it's noticeable from my uncompressed screenshots that the 60fps Mode doesn't have the native 4K look to it, or maybe it's simply all that post processing.

As for the screenshot you mentioned, something's definitely wrong here, on both collar and jacket.

I made some quick comparison shots.

all of them target 4K at high/medium settings mix. RT set to maximum (everything on, Reflections on High)
taken on an RTX 3060ti

Native 4K

4K FSR2 Performance Mode (1080p internal)

4K TAAU 50% (1080p internal)

given the resolution the RT reflections seem to be very close to my native 4K image here, the PS5 8K mode looks like 4K up-sampled using TAAU to 8K, while using the high RT reflections setting.

I also noticed that the jacket looks to have lower res textures on PC.... even tho I used max settings for textures, which is curious.
and the lighting seems to be reduced quality on Pro... not sure which setting that is... and testing it would be tedious (you can't change any settings in-game and have to go back to the main menu each time you change anything... dogshit PC port)

Just tried it. One of the best looking current gen games now looks even better. 8k fidelity mode is very impressive.

4k 60 fps mode no longer looks like a completely different game either. im honestly surprised they got 4k 60 fps running on ps5. its likely not full resolution because my 3080 couldnt run it at 4k tsr quality at 60 fps at the highest rt settings. sometimes i would have to drop it down to tsr balanced.

still, very solid patch. just use TSR people. thats what epic used in the very first ps5 demo and it was fine. its fine here as well.

Glad this studio is still around. I just found out about their new game [REDACTED], I'm not a big Rougelike guy but I'll probably pick it up to support them. Really enjoyed Callisto Protocol.

The 8K mode looks cleaner for sure.
I have to admit though, the 4K 60fps mode looks great. I booted it once more for the jacket screenshot, and watching that opening cutscene again but without motion blur.. I was really impressed. Looks legit great, and 4K to me.
