I'll definitely revisit this game soon, I've been meaning to. It's cool how it's practically become some sort of underdog since its release.

Also thanks for the info tommib tommib , I was really interested in [REDACTED] but was holding out for a bit. You made me not want to hold out much longer, lol.

If you’re into Returnal and Hades you’ll have a wonderful time. There’s a lot to discover in it.

I was interested in this game before it came out, nut after release lost interest based somewhat on the reviews but mostly of reactions around here. Played it on PS+ and ended up really liking it, I mean its not a GOTY contender but it was a solid game. I would have get this on a sale if I had known it was this good.

Don't sleep on this if you have it on PS+. You may really like it.
Same situation here, but played for about 30 minutes via PS+ and didn't grab me.

Re-downloading right now because I'm too curious to see the improvements after the crazy comments I'm reading.. who knows, maybe this is what I'll play once I'm done with RE4R.

Wow this is a nice upgrade patch! Nice variety of options and really pushing the perf envelope on what is one of the best looking games of this generation thus far.

Worth reminding everyone that running this game at native 4K/60 with the full ray tracing enabled is only possible on an RTX 4090 (not even the RTX 4080 or the 7900XTX can do it). So to see an AMD driven console pushing what appears to be native 4K/40fps with ray tracing is super impressive! We're talking roughly the experience of a 4070TI/7900XT here:

BTW, this is not the first title that is optimized for AMD hardware and/or console to approach 7900 XT performance on the PRO. This seems to be a best case scenario :messenger_winking:
We don't know if it's truly native 4K at 60fps on Pro. But yes, it is impressive regardless.

Not 100% certain but I'm pretty sure the dev on the purple forum that was taking about the pssr sdks being outdated, Callisto Protocol was one of the games he was working on with the updated SDK. So this bodes well for future games using the updated SDK compared to the ones with issues.

The results of this benchmark are misleading. Maybe that's how the game ran at launch, but when I played Callisto Protocol on my RTX4080S I saw between 50-90fps at 4K TAA native with max settings and full RT, and around 70-130fps at FSR2 quality.

yeah... but this game doesn't run at max settings and it doesn't run at native 4k on PS5 Pro

Exxxxactly. It shows that the hardware they were given is fantastic, you just have to use it properly!
That is why as always, it is really up to the developers. I'm sure ps5 pro is a capable machine especially with PSSR machine learning capabilities which will continue to evolve, learn and receive updates as time passes. It is not really fair that some journalist and vloggers base there judgement with 2 or 4 games that runs bad in ps5 pro. And its not even two weeks since the ps5 pro was in the market.

The results of this benchmark are misleading. Maybe that's how the game ran at launch, but when I played Callisto Protocol on my RTX4080S I saw between 50-90fps at 4K native with max settings and full RT, and around 120fps at FSR2 quality (which in this game looks the same as native TAA to my eyes). It seems that the PS5Pro is running this game at half the frame rate of my 4080S.
Upscaling, dynamic res, and different settings.

That's shocking, what's it using then?
Probably the original TAAU. The original Quality mode was 1440p-1728p upscaled to 4K via TAAU. The Pro with its 45% faster rendering and better RT can lift that significantly, even in the 40fps mode. A high resolution like that combined with a good TAAU implementation will look basically 4K.

This is just speculation on my part, it might be PSSR but I’m not seeing any mention of it, and the image in the 40fps mode looks similar to the original quality mode, if a touch sharper.

in the 8K mode they most certainly use TAAU since any other reconstruction method would probably absolutely tank performance.

in the other modes it could be TSR or FSR2. given that it is UE4, TSR is unlikely as only the very last few versions of UE4 supported TSR iirc.

so either TAAU across the board or FSR2 in the non-8K modes would be my guess.

I hadn’t played this before, but I remembered it was added as one of the PS+ games a while back, so I thought I’d give it a whirl on the Pro, and mercy me, it looks incredible!

I think it plays pretty well for a linear sci-fi horror title too. I’m just past the part where you get your first gun, and now I’m done for the night, but I’m keen to continue playing.

I’m pleasantly impressed.

I know the game is pretty linear, but if they can get a game that looks as good as Callisto Protocol to run at 8K and a decent framerate, that’s impressive.

that seems to indeed be the way to go.

and all of these are Unreal Engine games as well. so maybe the current UE4/5 plugin for PSSR just doesn't work right
Correct, they are supposedly using an older version of PSSR, hence the results. Callisto proves that you can just keep it as an option, but exploit the Pro in other ways! You just have to know what you're doing. As is generally the case, which makes all the shots taken at the hardware even more laughable.
