PS2 is one of the biggest-selling video game consoles of all time, with over 160,000,000 consoles sold worldwide since 2000

oh Jesus, offended? You speak of others "insecure projection", and yet here you are.
Wait I thought you were trying to distance yourself from "those" Nintendo fans. My post was kind of a test to see how you'd respond and interestingly you're acting defensive now :messenger_tears_of_joy: . Plus I saw you edited your post as to save face. Oh man don't play games with me now

Of course, I would expect nothing going less from the Switch’s greatest rival. Now let the end game commence.

What time is it?

But it isn't out of nowhere my man. It is the 30th anniversary. Look at the page Sony built highlighting the various systems.

I already commented that I was taking the piss out of them, like 5 posts above this one. It is funny timing, even back in March when Jim originally stated the numbers, but it doesn't mean they aren't at least close to accurate numbers.

Ah....I didn't see that post. My bad

I didn't realize this was such a point of contention for some. If i would have actually started reading through the thread beforehand, I wouldn't have gotten involved. Hindsight is 20/20
More like the "I'm in complete denial" theory.
are you good man? I replied to you that I was just talking shit. Are you really going to pretend that didn't happen?

Oh the irony in using an anime gif when Sony is on the brink of acquiring Kodokawa. PS2 isnt even fighting in the ring anymore. It's already taken its heaps of cash and gone home to chill. Nintendo cultists acting like this is some kind of victory make me laugh.

Don't worry about me man. It's already been established you're being reactionary when I wasn't trying to be accusatory. I was simply making conversation amd then you went all postal on me like "what are you talking about?"

Let me give you an example of someone being reactionary.

Probably time to log off and take a break. The amount of investment, on this particular topic, being displayed isn't normal.

Yeah of course, I picked it up from you and your cultists that you have a sudden affinity to. Move along. If you can't take the heat, sometimes you gotta get out of the kitchen yknow.

Is Switch going to pass this and become the best selling ever? I have no idea what Switch is at.
Possibly. It’s estimated to be at around 154M in March 2025.

Unless Nintendo stops production entirely in favor of “Switch 2” it should be able to sell another 10M up to 2027 with some price drops and cross-gen support.

Switch would have to ship 14 million units to come to a virtual tie.

Last year at this time, Nintendo had reported 132 million. I guess it is possible, but probably unlikely without a price cut.

Man its crazy that the Switch hasnt even had a fucking price cut. I am also ignorant to what Nintendo makes on each unit but surely they profit enough to be able to mark it down. Imagine if it was $150-200 or something. Wonder if we see something when they reveal SwitchU.

But Switch is an entirely different brand from 3DS and Wii U. It's neither carrying the DS or Wii name just like 3DS carried it's name from DS and Wii U from Wii as to indicate fans that this is a direct successor from a successful brand name. Everything is different from the logo design to the color scheme to the advertising.
You don't need to share branding to be a successor. The N64 was the successor to the SNES, and it was then succeeded by the GameCube which itself was followed by the Wii.

The Master System was succeeded by the Mega Drive, which was then succeeded by the Saturn and then the Dreamcast.

The 3DS didn't end production because of mobile. It ended because it was 9+ years old and no console gets manufactured forever.

It's not a follow up to anything so much as converging two markets together. 3DS was targeting children and diehards. Wii U was targeting those same diehards and the nongamers that loved Wii. Switch marketing involved young adults, which was entirely different from before.

I agree that it convetlrged the two marksts together, but Switch marketing involves young adults, children, die hards and nongamers that loved the Wii.

They havnt had to give up any of their audience with the Switch. It's what they had in the previous generation and more.

If Nintendo keeps it alive I think it'll be possible, especially if some games are cross gen.

3DS sold around 10 million after the Switch was out. Switch's should be able to do at least that after it's successor has launched.

Agree. At this point, it is really up to Nintendo as to whether or not they want to own the record for most sold or not. If they decide this matters then produce enough units to exceed 160m and let them sell out over time like PS2 did. Nintendo fans would love it, obviously. Stockholders, however, may want to move on and not have Switch competing with Switch 2. Just a matter of what Nintendo execs decide to do.

As much as I loathed PS2 back then (Sega fan) - but in retrospect it was a great console.
100% backward compatible, great modern dual shock controller, DVD, and some amazing games that took the HW power to a new heights in later years - and so many Japanese game support.
Winning Eleven /PES was still alive and kicking - used to have small league tournament among a group of my friends every month, which I remember with very fond memories.

I'm sorry you were offended, but you did bring Switch even tho the OP was only talking about the PS2, which for some reason attracts hordes of Nintendo fans like a swarm of cockcroaches bc they want to turn everything into a pissing contest.
Yes, it's only ever Nintendo fans that are obsessed with sales figures. Strange considering how many on here seem hell bent in convincing you the Nintendo Switch is not actually a console. ;)

Nintendo execs will care more about profitability too. I do see the system getting some discounts and being kept around as a cheap entry point. But the big markets like US and Japan will move on the successor fairly quickly I believe.
True, but those other consoles are not updating their sales figures, many years later,
Because those platforms didn't have the reporting changes that occurred with the PS2.

This is the first time we have got final PS2 sales. They can't be updated any more.
