Sony said at the end of December that it would stop shipping PlayStation 2 consoles to Japan, but now the company has confirmed that production has stopped worldwide. After nearly thirteen years, the PlayStation 2 is dead.

160 million dvd players. Not saying that it wouldn’t have done well without it. But the first entree level lowest priced dvd player during first launch years at the time helped a lot. Some individuals just bought it for that, not a game machine.

Why do people keep pushing this stupid myth? DVD didn't help the PS2. PS2 helped DVD.

And no, PS2, which launched at $299 was not the lowest priced DVD player. In 2000, you could get a DVD player for around $100, cheaper models for less. Within a year or two, they dropped to $50. It also has a higher attach ratio for games than the Switch.

It's time for this myth to die. PS2 was the most popular game console for gaming, not as a cheap DVD player. Deal with it.

You keep throwing this statistic around but it makes no sense for your case if you’re trying to argue that the Switch is not a victory relative to Nintendo’s past efforts.

This is a year-on-year figure, I.e. related only to past sales of the Switch itself the previous year.

You’d have to compare the profits they made here with the profits they made during year 8 of, say, the Wii/DS. They could see a 60% YoY decline and still have made more profit compared to year 8 of Wii/DS combined.

I think early it helped some sales, obviously not later on when ps2 was simply a beast for gaming

But I mean early on, 2000-2002 before it had the tens of millions

My dad got me and my siblings one after I sold him on it playing dvd’s too. At least in Canada at that time, it was one of the “cheaper” dvd players. Yes it helped dvds but that sale wouldn’t have happened if it only played games. At least for my household

I remember being so pumped when we got one.

I don't think anyone inside Sony cares that much about the Switch selling as much or more.

The companies just care about profits and Sony is happy today from that perspective. Nintendo could stop production of the switch tonight and they’d be proud of the coin it’s made them.

I was a Nintendo, Xbox and PC kid during the PS2 era; if I were to pick it up now what top 10 games should I get with it?

It’s going to be different for different folks. So many games that everyone had diff tastes. Hard to just pick 10

Why don’t we go with series?

1) GTA (San Andreas, Vice city, gta3….also had ports of liberty city stories and vice city stories)

2) MGS 2 & 3

3) Jak & Daxter Series (esp 1-3…naughty dog before uncharted and last of us)

4) Ratchet & Clank series (1-3, esp up your arsenal)

5) God of War (1 & 2) some of the best games of the gen

6) capcom hits: Okami (my fav capcom game on ps2), Devil may cry 1-3 (esp 3), viewtiful Joe, resident evil 4 for extra content (although gamecube was the definitive version, the extra missions were nice on ps2)

7) ico

8) shadow of the colossus

9) katamari Camado

10) bully

If you like racing sims, add gran turismo 3 & 4 on the list.

If you like rpgs, there’s a whole other list you can make including ff10, 12, dragon quest 8, persona, xenostuff…. Kingdom hearts games


Basically every well rated major third party game from tekken to soul Calibur to splinter cell to beyond good & evil to tony hawks to burnout to Star Wars stuff

But how many were actually sold, vs produced and shipped numbers!?!?!?!?

Sony has a pic of the last produced unit and it’s like 160.68 something million, someone posted it in the thread, can presume it still sold after they stopped reporting numbers until that last unit.

Switch should get close. I think switch is the closest thing to ps2 in terms of goat status in terms of sheer quality of what you can play on it.

Will be interesting to see how close they get to 161….If they hit their 12.5 million forecast they’ll get just under 154 million (about 153.8)
