Yakuza: Like a Dragon Reviews Thread

I hope this sells way less than the others, going turn-based was such a random and shitty pivot to take. They had an excellent thing going.

What a shitty take. 7 games weren't enough for you? Go play Judgment then, it's far better than most if not all Yakuza games, same developers, same combat style you like and I'm pretty sure they're going to continue the brawler style with Judgment series tho I heard it didnt do so well in sales so who knows if we're going to see a sequel.

Don't care about scores. Game looks like a lotta fun and I'm gonna play it.

Any reports on the PC version optimization? I'm afraid my GTX 1060 might not be able to handle this. :messenger_grinning_sweat:
The 1060 is in the recommended specs so you’re going to be fine. I hope it’s going to be very well optimised on day one

Dragon Quest XI?
Apples and oranges. Just because i/we like turn based doesn't mean i/we would want every gaming franchise to become turn based as well.

And it's not that we had a lot of games with Yakuza's combat style in the first place.

I've played Judgement and it was fantastic as you say.

I enjoyed all the yakuza games although they were getting a bit stale.

I’m tempted to give this a try, but the problem now is the PS5 version is a long way off.

By the time it comes I’ll probably have forgotten about it. I keep forgetting about it low even though is just about to come out.
Why is you profile picture that of a puckered anus? A tad strange if you ask me.

I'd buy this game if I had already played FFVIIR.

Unfortunately, I haven't.

So I'll definitely wait this one until next year.

The studio decides to take a ballsy different approach in their game. A random salty person: “I hope this sells way less than the others”
mocking-spongebob-1556133078.jpg

Very very silly...

They said they would revert back to action combat depending on the reception of 7.

I've been gaming long enough to know that I don't like turn based games. What the hell is wrong with hoping a franchise sticks to your preferences?

I guess people are having a hard time trying understand this. I not saying every game should be a turn based, what I saying is its not because a game became a 'turn-based' it does not mean that it is a bad game.

A game changing their vision not necessary translate into a bad game. Witcher get a card game, but its not necessarily bad game. Its just a risky move.

You have a fuckton of Yakuza games with brawl mechanics. I think trying new things is good! Maybe they even improve it more for the next entry.
Please explain to me in what way could taking the only extant 3D beat em up franchise out there and replacing its core mechanic with the oldest, cheapest and most overused combat system in the history of game design be considered in any way innovative. Use pictures if you have to, I'm a bit thick.

I didn't use the word "innovative" but okay, this might be a long read so I'm putting it inside spoiler brackets:
It's different!

I dunno man, I hated the fighting in Yakuza 0 and turn based combats, when done right, can be very engaging.

I always thought this was an interesting take/shift of gaming mechanics for a Yakuza game and looks fun/whacky. I’m still playing through the earlier games but I will definitely check this out.

Curious to see how I feel about the turn based battles after some 40 hours. I've never been huge on turn based games but I had such a good time with the first two Yakuza games that I'm sure I'll have fun with this one too. After 2 months of playing horror games I'm ready for some lighthearted mini games and over the top Yakuza fun. Bring on next week!

I'm worried about how this will sell on Xbox. It's the first Yakuza title that hasn't been simulatneously launched on Gamepass, plus Xbox only users have had no way to play 4-6.
I just wonder how many people on Xbox like Yakuza enough to want to buy at launch without feeling the need to play the other sequels first.
Either way, really excited for this one, I'm happy it's getting attention.

I enjoyed his review as always too, but regarding playing in Japanese: the reason people push it so hard is because the acting is a million times better and the voices are better matched to the characters. Never mind you don't lose a lot of the flavour when they're growling and swearing at each other :messenger_beaming:
I can't tell I listened in Japanese but I don't understand it. They could be discussing brunch. It really means nothing to me. Which is why having english was at least nice. Talking to my coworker who is Japanese they did NOT think the acting was ""a million times better" here than the English version lol.

I'm interested in seeing how this does on PC. The others all sold well, but this is the first full-price, day one Yakuza game on Steam.

I decided to wait with this purchase until the most expensive edition is priced as low as the cheapest edition... I don't like the DLC business model they went with this time.

Regarding VO language, I always go with whatever is 'native' if I have the option. Even if I don't know exactly what they're saying by listening to them speak, I have no problems reading subtitles. There's two reasons for this - one, it'll feel more authentic to me and two, I'll have no idea if they did a bad job of acting. A bad english dub can ruin a game/movie/show for me.

Only thing I have to say to people whining about turn-based: don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Save for only two, maybe three main series games, Yakuza's combat was never all that stellar to begin with.

Wait, with English subtitles, right?? I meant with subs! :messenger_grinning_sweat:

To each their own, but I can't imagine going through the series without the original actors. No idea about this particular game though.

Anyway, appreciate your review! That was the only bit that surprised me.

Don't need reviews. Will be my game of the year for sure. (Sorry, Cyberpunk 2077) Been waiting for this since Ichiban was introduced some 3 or so years ago. Very hyped to try it done in a new style. Have had tons of previous ones as beat em ups, so this is refreshing to me.

Have my PS4 copy reserved for Tuesday next week. Will likely be glued to my PS4 for a month or so.

Can't fucking wait.

I like Yakuza series for the series, but after marathon-ing Yakuza Kiwami 2, 3, 4, 5 and now into 6, I had enough of the brawler fighting system since a lot of it is cheap attack, both from me and from the enemy. Can't wait for Like a Dragon, tried the Japanese demo and I really enjoyed the turn based battles.

Seems like decent reviews apart from IGN and Eurogamer. Which both are awful at reviewing games lol.
I wasnt gonna buy this anything buy really dont care for IGN’s opinion or Eurotrash

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
I mean, it's not a mainline game anyways (and will probably become its own side series if it does good, like SMT/Persona)

I'm sure the next big one will be all out action. I just want this for Virtua Fighter 5 FS and whatever else is found in arcades :)

Granted if they brought us (PC) Judgement I'd get that instead for the same reason and the good Yakuza gameplay on top :D

This is Yakuza 7. Mainline game. No spin off or side series. What are you talking about???

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is Ryu ga Gotoku 7 in Japan. Sega also already said that Ichiban Kasuga is the new protagonist onward.

They'll return to action gameplay, you'll see. I mean, what's more iconic than that? Could there ever be an off shoot like Judgement or First of the North Star: Lost Paradise for Like a Dragon? Unless they do a different action series to move forward from series trappings that is

The way I see it, they didnt revitalize the franchise with this turn-based move. Yakuza games already had a ton of content and could sometimes drag..I mean these games recently were coming out almost annually and every time you get like 40+ hrs content. Making it turn based I can only see it lasting even longer because how much slower it is compared to pure action gameplay. I like the franchise but to me, it doesnt needs this going back to old skool mechanics. The franchise needs to be put on ice or at best, make one every 2 years or so. They keep using the same assets for the last 5 games because of the setting, its getting boring. Go to Kyoto/Nara/Hiroshima/Yokohama/Okinawa...yes i understand its probably not a Yakuza paradise but how many more times are you gonna walk down the same streets of Kamarucho?

EDIT:

Just checked on wikipedia, since 2016 they were releasing sometimes up to 2-3 Yakuza titles a year. WTF lol, if anyone felt the game needed a change because it was going stale, its not because of the mechanic but because they have been spoon feeding the titles like crazy. How could you not get burnt out?

Not sure who your friend is but going to have to disagree. Haven't played Like a Dragon but in Judgment's case, japanese version is absolutely ten times better than the english one besides the fact that voices fit with the faces. Same goes for Ghost of Tsushima, japanese voices are fuckign great compared to the dull acting in english but the problem with GoT is that they dont match the faces so in that case Jap is the dub but honestly who the fuck would play that game in anything but Japanese? Same goes for Yakuza games. English dub in a game set in Japan about yakuzas? Ugh. Worse than watching animes dubbed in english.

Not sure about the others. This is indeed Like a Dragon we were talking about.
As for the other stuff. Since I can't understand japanese the voices don't match whats going on because I can't even tell if they are angrily ordering lunches or smashing someone in the pecker

I dont understand a word theyre saying either but I can read. I suppose its weird if youre not used to it. I rarely watch animes but somehow I still feel more immersed when I hear them talk natively. Reading and watching them at the same time does no ruin the scene for me.

Maybe someone can help clearing it up for me: I know there is no save transfer from PS4 to PS5 version of this game, but will I be able to continue my PS4-savegame on PS5 through back-compatibility?

I haven't seen a platform as bad as Steam when it comes to release timings. Yakuza still locked and not even a preload is available ffs
Steam does all of that and a billion more things, SEGA chose not to do it, what are you going on about? Publishers and developers have more control and more options and more capabilities than anywhere else. Might as well blame Steam when they act dumb and don't release PC ports at all, lol.

This is a smack in the PC gamer face from SEGA, not from Valve, they can't even bother doing this right or at least scheduling the launch so that you get the hours count down if nothing else. At least they're better in that they actually release shit on PC nowadays but eh, blame those responsible.

Waiting for my cdkey over here.

Lots of people were ambivalent about turn based when the Japanese version was about to come out but changed their tune after trying it. I my case I like jprgs though.

Pretty sure this is not on Steam. Even when you look at upcoming releases the game does not show up, or at least it didnt when I looked yesterday and I was confused. I guess whoever manages the page didnt actually set up the page properly and thats why you dont have a time until release and whatnot and they'll just do it manually when they wake up.

It's 11/10 already and I can't download the game yet. Is it available at some particular hour?

Edit: PC version btw.
