Resident Evil 4 Remake |OT| Welcome back stranger! What are you RE-buyin'

General advice for anyone who's played the original and is starting on hardcore:

Ease yourself into using the parry mechanic more often early on, even if your muscle memory is telling you otherwise. The parry is the bigger draw this time around than the kick. Not saying that the kick isn't old faithful, but instead I'm saying there's a few extra steps in the combat routine now.

Played this up to chapter 2 last night.

Having played the OG fresh in mind this is better in basically every way.

Better graphics (obviously), better voice acting, better controls, better level design most importantly better gameplay.

Anyone crying about knife durability is just annoyed they can't use a thing they used to abuse. Now it's a resource that's way more functional but there's consequences to using it. You have to think about when and where you want you use it.

As a result I'am not collecting an absurd amount of ammo that's breaks the resource management of the game.

Cracking stuff

PSA for anyone who's playing on Xbox and has an 8bitdo Ultimate.

go into the configuration app for the controller, chose one of your profiles that you don't need anywhere else, basically make one just for RE4,

and then go to your stick settings and on the right stick turn the inner dead zone to 0, lower the outer deadzone to ~85, and on the bottom tick the turn off deadzones box.

with these settings the reaction curve will be squished inward and will feel a lot more reactive to smaller stick inputs.
in-game I would turn the sensitivity to a medium level for aimimg, and the acceleration for aiming also near the middle.

because the outer deadzone will be larger, your acceleration will kick on faster and the outer 15% circle of the stick will simply be full speed

this is a way to make the Xbox version feel A LOT better to play, at least for me.
sadly people without an 8bitdo are out of luck I guess. maybe other third party controllers that have configuration apps have similar settings to change the outer deadzone... I know the Razer Wolverine V2 black doesn't sadly.

Well damn, guess I have to buy that basic Elite then.

the Elite 2 could work too I guess.
the 8bitdo works in this case because its app allows you to increase the outer deadzone, which improves the reaction curve.

afaik the Elite 2 doesn't have such an option.

however it does have multiple reaction curve settings, and those could help I guess, but I personally haven't tried that yet.
if it has an "aggressive" reaction curve setting it might help

Love the game. I did 12 hours straight into it yesterday. no stop. Like if it was 2005 lol.
Playing on pc, 4k maxed, fsr1 ultra quality, no RT (crashes). Looks good, performs good. Controls ok although mouse sensitivity is never right.
I am not so sure about the merchant tasks/trade. It will surely make possible replays more chore-like compared to original but the pacing is still good aside from spending way more time searching each area and medallions and stuff.

Kinda wish I played on ps5. Playing with a controller grew a lot on me in last few years, to the point that mouse and keyboard is just not comfortable. But mouse is still a good choice because the game is super fast. Not having any issues with the mouse. The hardest part is still the demo part, which is OK.

I also strangely miss dualsense features lol. I am thinking "oh I wonder how this weapon would feel" which I know is stupid since you forget about dualsense 5 minutes in but still. I will maybe buy it there again once they fix image quality.

The Dual Sense features are pretty cool and do add to it as well, the speaker surprisingly is used quite well, but I prefer to use headphones so they’ve been kinda wasted but a nice feature

Single player rarely gets better than this
Holly fuck.
It's like what we thought we will get with our PS360 games being insanely spoiled n sickly inspired by legendary period of 2003-2005 game releases.
It is beautiful, complex, difficult, packed with smart creative decisions n style.

This is how you milk you franchises

Outstanding job Capcom!

Yesterday I played like two hours in Xbox series X. At the beginning I was like "these controls are unplayable ", but after the big zone with hanging bridges and tons of enemies, I realized I had a lot of fun and I managed to kill everyone with no problem. In fact, how the combat works reminded me of the original game. It's more tense and tactical than other TPS.

I still prefer PS5 controls, but I think is perfectly playable in Xbox. I can understand why most people that can't compare both consoles doesn't complain about the controls.

I don’t get a different feel. Like they all shoot the same. I don’t notice much haptic or adaptive trigger support. If they’re there, it’s super minor. The speaker is used well though.

To add to this, if anything, I feel the lack of haptics is more noticeable than when it’s there. Like, why no haptics with the typewriter. That seemed like a huge missed opportunity.

Just finished the opening last night at 1am. Runs and looks great on PC. Really enjoying the cutscenes and the village start was fun. Good so far in my opinion although I’ve only just started.

I said this in another thread, but the pacing of this games suffers a lot and won’t offer the same masterful replayability of the OG, there’s too much exploration and backtracking for useless shit that only mines the experience.

I’m enjoying it, but there are certain core aspects that the team didn’t get:

-Laser sight
-Treasures being very light puzzles in the way
-Backtracking to do shit
-The battles don’t feel as snappy, fast and satisfying
-Too much, and I mean a hell of a lot more battles were you need to do crowd control and no effective weapons to do it
-This could be just me but the pistols and shotguns don’t feel powerful enough? Graphically looks like a lot of damage and gore, then you see everyone getting up like nothing

Just got to the castle, let’s see how it goes.
You can get a red dot site from The Merchant but agreed, it should be standard over all RE games. Feels much more snappy than bloom crosshairs.

So this is really well made and I'm definitely hooked. Hard to judge how well it can stand up the OG gamecube masterpiece but I do find some little changes are bothering me. Like the merchant. They've clearly done a great job and he has a lot of great lines but the classic resi 4 merchant is one of the great all time gaming memes, ya know? But what are they supposed to do, make everything the exact same?

I even miss the bottlecap prizes with the tinny voice samples: "don't worry ashley, I'm comin' for ya"

Lol i played 3 hours last night with no problems and today the game crashed 2 times after 30 sec of gameplay and the second time it rebooted my pc:messenger_grinning_sweat:

I'm installing the new nvidia drivers to see if something change.

This plays pretty good on the Steam Deck for anyone wondering. Have to set the fps to around 30 or 40 , but for me that's fine. Couple muddy textures here and there also , but have not really played around with the graphics settings much. What a game though. Capcom nailed it as usual.

Really enjoying this so far, just started chapter 4. Played RE2 Remake, Deadspace Remake and then this back to back, what a time to be alive.

1, 2 and 3 were so damn good back in the day. I skipped this due to them ditching the formula and removing the puzzle element, i didnt think RE controls would make for a fun action game and the thought of having limited ammo seemed like hell. I did try 5 and really didnt enjoy it, even after all that i'm finding it hard to ignore the hype on this!

Ashley’s new voice actress has done a phenomenal job so far. Her sounds of panic, concern for Leon, and cries for help sound so real. Luis is unquestionably better in this than the Remake. Leon’s VA does a great job with this different take on Leon too.

Ada unfortunately sounds like her VA is bored. I don’t know if she’s just bad, or if it was bad voice direction. It was great seeing Leon and Ada’s reunion and him owning her in a brief fight again.

Ok, I arrived to the shooting range in XSX, now the deadzone is really a problem. I don't know if to wait for a patch, but my hopes for a deadzone fix are very low 😪

Really surprised (and saddened) that they changed the iconic voice of the merchant. Is the orig voice actor dead or soemthing?.
The new one sounds like The Duke doing a bad impression of the orig merchant, crossed with Ray 'I'm ere to kill your monshta' Winstone.

Just beat Bitores on Hardcore. Not a fan of the redesigned fight, to be honest. Much preferred having some room to kite the bastard. The second phase of the fight reminded me of the awful crane fight in RE2R in the sense that there's barely any room to move arond, except worse because the walls are on fire lol

But yeah, gonna reload and refight him now because I bought the TMP prior to the fight thinking it'd be clutch against him like in the original RE4... but I didnt even need it.

Do I need to buy the treasure maps with the spinals if I have the deluxe edition treasure map?

Damn , Capcom took away the extra ammo trick from the merchant in this version. Upgrading the capacity no longer gives you a free clip refill. That was my go to trick for hard difficulties in the original , always upgrade capacity with a low or empty gun. Especially clutch for the magnum and rifles.

Well that will make my hard-core run pretty tough. Still loving the game overall so far.

true. interesting. I thought RE games are mainstream and are doing much bigger numbers
lNGnHDL.png
Well some of those nu,mbers are actually pretty good for peak numbers with a AAA single player game on Steam.
Also the RE games are not as big as people think. Arent most of them in the 4-8mil sales range, even after years on sale?.

Good work on the OT. Anyone feel like the Red9 is weak as hell through the castle? Is the Blacktail any better?

I never played RE4 so picked standard difficulty like it suggests and just a warning that it's like story mode in most other games. God knows what easy mode is like.

I read that it gets harder after the start but it doesn't. In fact it gets much easier to the point my inventory is always full of health items and ammo and I blast through the set pieces and bosses ignoring all mechanics as stuff dies so quickly.

This is clearly not the intended experience as I'm finding it decent but not great atm. To me a game that is no fun at lower difficulties isn't well balanced and isn't a 10/10 game like some reviews gave it.

It's my only complaint about the game so far. He's not nearly bloke-y enough and almost sounds posh at times. He sounds like a Canadian doing a bad British accent, which he is.

Wonder if I should pimp it out with upgrades so hard it becomes a baby rifle like my first playthrough of the OG RE4

Interesting as i have seen a few streamers playing on standard that have had their arse handed to them, resulting in them saying the game is surprisingly harder than the orig game.
I'm even watching one right now, who is a Resi veteran, and usually plays games on the hardest difficulty, getting killed numerous times on standard difficulty.

Maybe you're just really good at the game.
