Really not enjoying Metroid Dread - does it get better?

I played it on an emulator at 165hz and I freaking loved it.
My only complaint would be that in some parts it got almost gratuitously challenging/punishing for no good reason (both in terms of bosses and in requirements to pull off some "advanced maneuvers to get some collectables), but then again in the end I managed so it wasn't exactly impossible.

Yeah, I would argue that in terms of bosses it was the same old "look for the pattern", I didn't have any issues with those, but the last few collectibles I had to google them and the maneuvers to get them were borderline ridiculous.

The only criticism of this game I agree with wholeheartedly is of the music. Except for the remixes from Super…it’s totally uninspired and forgettable.

The EMMI encounters actually get pretty fun once you get used to them and quit worrying about dying because you can continue right at the beginning of the zone

Did a quick google search and it tells me game has 10 boss encounters, some of them repeat, and 7 emmi encounters. So roughly 20 encounters that will require to git gud.

Its a 10 hrs game, every half hour you run into a boss fight or EMMI encounter. This i think creates a problem. Game needed to be much bigger to have this many bosses. I do feel pacing of the game is off due to this. It never feels like you are exploring and making progress.

The game doesn't really get better. It does eventually stop forcing you forward and eases up on the cutscenes to let you explore but it happens way too late. The third act is also retarded with some story beats I absolutely hated. Most of the secrets are also shine spark related which gets old fast.

The game has the most boring locations of any Metroid game like, ever. And the final boss is total bullshit. Not a huge fan tbh

The final boss at least is a challenge, Super Metroid’s, which I still think is the greatest game ever made, is a complete cakewalk even if you’re speedrunning with minimal upgrades

Other M is definitely a better game
Come. The. Fuck. On.
Other M isn’t half as bad as the internet tried to convince everyone back then, but even comparing it to Dread is crazy pills territory.

I really feel they should make a Metroid spinoff that’s 100% shinespark puzzles and fucking stop filling every mainline game with those.
Replaying Zero Mission the other day only refreshed my opinion that fucking half of that game’s 100% runtime is shinespark shenanigans.

My main gripe with Dread is that there’s too many “keys” to too many “locks”.
There’s an upgrade that’s literally required once to get past a pond that’s a bit too wide to jump across otherwise. Kinda like that last upgrade in Prime 3, used literally once to open a blocked door.
Stuff like this only makes the map seem overdesigned and the game more linear than it should. Funny, then, that they intentionally put in so many ways to sequence break the game.

This thread got me to replay the demo which I originally bounced off of for some reason. It's actually very slick!
Playing on non-OLED I do recommend boosting the brightness all the way up and disabling auto-brightness.

Shinespark is the worst thing Metroid games try to push, it's just tedious and lame. What I'd like to see from a Metroid game is a Hollow Knight White Palace type of segment in their place. Give us powerups that will let us dash in the air, bounce around, etc.

I loved it. Completed it 100% and would dearly love Nintendo to greenlight more 2D Metroid games alongside the Prime 3D games.

Same here, 100-percented it and it was my GOTY, I’ve finished it several times after that. For me it’s better than any Prime game with a wide margin. Metroid should be 2D. And I believe MercurySteam is said to work on another Metroid so hopefully we get to have these 2D games around for awhile now. 👍

Anyhow enough people had Halo Infinite as their GOTY to make it GAF’s GOTY same year as Metroid Dread. Opinions are opinions. I’m not surprised by this talk. Already had the talks years ago. I remember GOW Jaffe having some huge rant about how the game design was bad because he had no idea he should shoot a roof to progress. And this is in a Metroid I’d say have too much exploration hand-holding, easiest Metroid to 100% by far.

We also had people complain about Elden Ring, best game ever besides Super Metroid.

Sometimes opinions on games vary as much as opinions on food or music, in the end it’s mostly just about taste. Some want linear games or a clear path to the next main quest, some want to feel lost and have no clue what to do unless they explore throughly. I’m in the last camp. Played some Elden Ring last night, was down in Sealed Tunnel, one of my kids looked at me playing, after a while I get questioned why I’m hitting walls… I say nothing. Then an illusion wall disappear. - That’s why. 🙃

There’s no doubt in my mind that they’ve already green-lit another 2D Metroid. Dread is the best selling game in the entire franchise.
Yeah there is no official info but reading between the lines makes me sure they’re doing another one, they’ve said that they loved working on it and working with Nintendo and the result and critical success makes me think it’s a lock. Nintendo should acquire the studio tbh, locking up a future of these high quality 2D titles now that Retro are back doing 3D.
I’m guessing they’ll be there mid gen on Switch 2.

What if Team Cherry is working on a new Metroid besides Silksong?! Nah, Id much rather have Moon Studios take a go at it.

Isn’t Team Cherry like 2 people? They have their hand full just making Silksong, can’t do any parallell work. Theoretically they could do it in another timeline, but I’d rather see them making a new Zelda 2 in that case, they’re experts at melee combat.

Off topic but Moon should be contracted for another Ori after finishing No rest for the Wicked, if I was MS I would open the wallet wide for that to happen, was my favorite MS IP before they got Bethesda.
That could take some time though going by how ambitious Moon’s plans are for Wicked. (great game btw)

So for 2D Metroid, MercurySteam it is, only dev I can think of that will do it right now.

It's better than the 3DS game, but spaniard Metroid overall is the worst. It's Metroid without amtosphere and without engaging world design - i.e. Metroid without the important parts. Controls and a couple of bosses are ok, but that's just not enough.
