Yeah does make me wonder. The Pro is soooo quiet compared to the Slim. I'm so much happier with the acoustic profile here, even playing harder games like TLoU II etc. So pleased. Again, it's not Series X quiet, but it's really excellent - in my case.I wonder if we have a fan lottery and some are louder than others. It would help if people can take pics of the fan blades / Center of the fan to determine what models they have
You don't need to. Every fan has a model number on itI wonder if we have a fan lottery and some are louder than others. It would help if people can take pics of the fan blades / Center of the fan to determine what models they have
Ignore the second video posted please. Here are the correct videos from that user:
I think it could be useful for those that take issue with it, but personally I have no problem with the noise.I think I have found the most comprehensive analysis/solution for this problem.
Skip to 24:40 for the summary.
The air flow design dries the joint soldering. Previously, others found that adding silicone between capacitors added inulsation, reducing the sound sometimes. However, this didn't work for many. The reason for this is because they focused solely on one or two components - the actual solution, according to this video explanation, is 'reflow every surface mount pad on the entire board'. Good news, you don't need to remove or replace anything. Bad news, it is time consuming.
Absolutely shocking stuff from SONY engineers here.

It is all relative and it really depends on the noise floor of your room and the distance you’re sitting away from the PS5. My definition of a silent device would be something like MacBook Air since it is fanless with absolutely no coil whine. A quiet device would be something like the Series X or a Mac Mini that both have fans that are barely audible and almost no coil whine. Is that considered loud? I feel like if you need to deep throat the Pro with a camera to capture coil whine, something is up.
It still depends on how far away you sit from the console. My console is on the desk and when someone calls something like that quiet I can only laugh about it. My Pro is definitely louder than my big Launch PS5.I don't have one, but I do know everyone claiming theirs is silent either has bad hearing, is not being truthful, or doesn't know what "silent" means. Silent means literally no noise at all. No electronic device with a fan is completely silent. It may well be very quiet, to the point where you can't hear it if there's some ambient noise in your room, but it's not silent.
To be fair, this problem is not exclusive to Sony. My LG 48CX OLED also has audible coil whine when it is off and in standby mode. However, it’s dead quiet when it’s turned on. Even the Series X has an almost imperceptible coil whine when it’s left in the instant ON standby mode that lets it start super fast. However, you have to have your ear right next to the console.I'm returning my Pro.
This is the second unit.
I've never experienced anything like it before with my other PlayStation consoles, and to see that is so endemic in their motherboard design is disheartening.
I tried resorting to headphones, but guess what? When I plugged them in to be charged by the Pro in rest mode, that coil whine began again.
So disappointing.
Returned mine today, as well. Going to try my luck with one more. But honestly, a large number of them seem loud. You've got to be super lucky, I think.I'm returning my Pro.

does it get louder when playing 120hz games?I'm returning my Pro.

The noise appeared in the following scenarios:does it get louder when playing 120hz games?
Your P5 Pro became you!Mine was dead silent for the first two days and now it's loud with coil whine wtf
i had 2 original PS5 and they both do the same thing as you described, it's like the coil whine is correlated with FPSThe noise appeared in the following scenarios:
- Playing in Performance Mode. Even in the menus, during Performance mode, made no difference. However, It was fine in Fidelity Mode.
- Going through the menus on COD (which is a 120Hz game.)
- When in rest mode charging controllers.
So it seems, the console is using more power on average than the original PS5, and that increases the vibration acoustics inside, hence the sound.
So far it's absolutely silent, just like my launch PS5.
Oh, good to know. I haven't actually tried the new disc drive yet, but you're right that part could be a little noisy on the old one.The add-on disc drive seems quieter that the og PS5 to me. That thing was loud when it spun up.
Coil whine if it is there usually doss get worse at higher framerates. My MSI 2080 which had very high pitched whine would be silent at 60-90fps but soon as you pushed it to 144 it would be whine city.i had 2 original PS5 and they both do the same thing as you described, it's like the coil whine is correlated with FPS
and had the same with an asus RX6800
Let me know how it wentReturned mine today, as well. Going to try my luck with one more. But honestly, a large number of them seem loud. You've got to be super lucky, I think.
I got to compare 2 because amazon screwed up. Both fans ramp up and one had really bad coil whine. The 2nd also had some coil whine but very faint. Now I gotta send the other back.
Also, why are screenshots impossible to transfer in bulk unless you back up or data transfer? Seems dumb.
It completely depends on how people live. You live next to a busy street? Your brain will filter out the droning noises subconsciously, but at the same time these noises will also overwhelm a PS5. So the conclusion to someone living like that will be "the PS5 is whisper quiet".I wonder how close are ppl sitting to their consoles.
If I put my ear to mine in standby mode, yes, I hear the coil whine. But I have to be like 5 cm from it to hear the noise.
And if anything, my hearing is TOO good, any loud noise causes me physical pain.
I do hear the fans while games are on, but it is not loud enough to drown the gameplay or even be distracting.
It certainly sucks that there is still luck of the draw here and some units are louder than the others.

This sound is on my launch PS5 and both pros had it as well. One of the pro consoles that clicking sound is very faint so I opted for that. Hate when this shit becomes a lottery. This is the sound I recorded. How terrible is this?
I hope a journalist picks up on this as its affecting countless people.
It's audible when running games but not noisy at all. When you factor in the audio of games, you can't hear it running from what I played earlier today.
In my case, I think the coil whine is a bit quieter than the launch PS5, but it's still there. And I feel like the fan noise is a bit more audible on the Pro, which makes sense I guess.
Mine is loud. Loud enough that I'm pretty sure I'm going to return it and hope I get a quieter one.
Do you have it plugged directly into the wall socket, or an extension lead? I've read the former can help.I can tell it's on if I'm on mute and nothing at all is happening in the house. No ventilation, no water in pipes, everyone asleep, no cars driving in front of the house.
People saying Dead silent...You must mean when it's unplugged. Astro's playroom engages the fan and it's far from "dead silent".
