PS5 Pro Is Going To Change The Future Of Console Gaming. PSSR is Very Big Deal

I remember the same bullshit with "it's a monster!" and again, with the 12TFPS machine, the Velocity architecture, blah blah blah.

Master race nonsense. Bring in the games.

I don't know why they used bloodborne as an example. It looks like shit. I'm sure other games will look leagues better.
I think it's because everyone and their mother was asking for a Bloodborne comparison. So they posted one single comparison picture and it's the second most picked apart picture on the internet (the first being the 4chan alien).

PSSR in action....

sorry....had to

Loooool....!

This little guy deserves the whole world as his territory after this. This is legit the best thing I've seen all week! Thanks for the chuckle

Though it's true that the PS5 SSD is fast, it does not mean the PS5 has infinite vram. That is complete nonsense.
Just consider that the PS5 SSD does 5.5Gb/s, while the PS5 vram does 448GB/s. That is close to a 100 times more bandwidth.
And then there is latency. An SSD has latency in the range of hundreds of ms, while vram has latency in the range of 140 ns. This is a 10^-3 vs 10^-9.

What the PS5 SSD does very well is that it reduces the need to cache a lot of data on the vram, because it can swap data much faster than an HDD.
This saves vram space, that can be used for higher quality assets.
But it does not mean it can transfer data as fast as vram. It's no where near that.

And another thing. The big advantage of the PS5 SSD is not it's transfer speed, it's the file system, which allows data seeks to be much faster than on Windows PCs.
The theoretical transfer speed of PS5 I/O is 25GB/s, with Kraken's compressed transfer speed of 9~22GB/s. (RAW:5.5GB/s)
Here are some explanations for Cerny:
"So when I talked about the dream of an SSD part of the reason for that 5GB/s target was to eliminate loads, but also part of the reason for that target was streaming as in what if the SSD is so fast that as the player is turning around. It's possible to load textures for everything behind the player in that split second."
"On PlayStation 5 though the SSD is very close to being like more RAM."
"This is one of the reasons that 16GB of GDDR6 for playstation 5 the presence of the SSD reduces the need for a massive intergenerational increase in size."
Also, the first UE5 demo shown on the PS5 featured 8K textures.

Vram also uses data compression, to increase data transfers from the GPU to vram. It has been doing it for decades now.
So both systems are punching above their base theoretical bandwidths.

Yes, it reduces the need to cache as many data on vram, meaning games can use more vram for other things.
Notice he does not say, that the SSD replaces vram.
And you still fail to understand how gigantic the difference is between an SSD and vram, be it in latency or memory bandwidth.

Also, the first UE5 demo shown on the PS5 featured 8K textures.

That means nothing. Especially with modern LOD and streaming systems.

Console with no exclusives will only change one thing. Make want to buy next Nintendo console and go to steam eventually after the end of PS5 gen.

Too long to read but really hopes so, i will probably only get to try it when PS6 released, but if they can reach something similar to DLSS then it should really be huge.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
FYI, the Digital Foundry video confirmed that the PS4 image quality toggle is just a post process filter. It does not increase the resolution or IQ etc. Post Process works better for 2D elements but in 3D stuff, especially with TAA, it has no difference.

Yep.

I always thought DLSS was kind of overrated but I think we already see the advantage of bringing this tech to a console. The next PlayStation and Xbox (LOL) will make heavy use of these features. So the PS5 Pro is pointing the way forward, obviously.
PSSR is most likely using amd's upscaling tech. I can't remember when that came out but it has definitely been a few years. let's not pretend Sony threw together PSSR themselves so quickly.
Sony said they were working on the PS5 Pro before the PS5 launched. It is not "quick" by any means. Not to mention Sony has been working on image algorithms like this going back to PS3 (MLAA) and PS4 Pro with CBR.

At this early stage of PSSR ML, or may I call it Pssr 1.0 , it is already showing promise and potentials. By a year, I'm sure that PSSR ML has matured enough, learned allot, adjusted and updated to see more of its impressive capabilities. GTA6, Wolverine, and Death stranding 2 might be Pssr ML ultimate showcase next year.

Like when console-only gamers realized that 60fps was actually a huge difference, or when they got to experience SSD speeds.
SSD speeds only matter so much.
A 20+ year old launch PS2 playing 20+ year old games off of a 20+ year old obsolete IDE 3.5in HDD via SATA I can often have much shorter system boot and game load times than a PS5 or PC with the fastest SSD known to man.
'Evolution' in gaming has come with massive downsides that can't be offset by newer HW. PCs have been selling us HW because that's the way MS has always done business but consoles have always been all about selling games.
In terms of gameplay and pure enjoyability game load times matter far more than resolution and 20+ years after PS2 we should be living in a world with shorter game load times across the board.

SYSTEM BOOT TIMES
PSX - 00:11:03
PS2 - 00:11:05

PS3 - 00:25:07
PS4 - 00:22:24
PS5 - 00:20:00

Too many tech spec features (pssr, 4k, ray tracing) and none of them are credible, HD, HDMI for attention 10-15 years ago, if you ask someone what pssr is they wouldn’t know, Sony is needs to hire someone to market these features, show energy. If they’re just putting in pssr for credibility it won’t work.
