Don't listen to what they say, look at the screen. You can see significant subpixel shimmering and ghosting in several of those sequences. Just look at the back of the blue jacket in the 1440p sequence in Control, and the floor in the 4k example in Control. They really went out of their way to blow up DLSS as incredible in that video whereas in the video where they compared DLSS 2.4 to FSR 2, they pointed out more of DLSS's shortcomings.

DLSS 2.0 changed from a spacial to a temporal upscaler and that's when it improved massively. Sure, you can point out flaws even today as it's not perfect, but it was good, and HU are the ones who shat on DLSS the most before 2.0, so they weren't going out of their way to blow it up as "incredible". You're sitting here telling us DLSS wasn't good until 2022-2023 when this is blatantly false. It was considered NVIDIA's ace technology by the first half of 2020 before the current consoles even hit the market.

3 introduced frame generation. It didn’t improve the quality of the previous version otherwise.

I’m not even talking about PSSR. I’m saying DLSS wasn’t dogshit for 3-4 years. It was awful for just over a year and became good with 2.0. That’s all I’m saying.

Nvidia and AMD already did the same thing, actually AMD did for consoles even if the effort wasn't perfect (and badly used by devs), I don't think PSSR achieves something

But yeah, pretty glad I stopped playing most of the major exclusive games this gen. Now let's see what they're really capable of on the Pro.
I have the launch PS5 and nearly every game on the list. I also had a child around the same day as launch. Rarely got to play any of the games.

Got a pro order for the pro and giving the wife my base unit. This week will be amazing 😎👍💯

You should ask all of this people bringing odd DLSS comments in here.. for some reason I think lots of future PS5Pro owners believe that PSSR will fix all of the issues with shit PlayStation ports and it is better than DLSS.

Seriously though, it is good that they have brought ai upscaling to consoles it was the next best thing to bring over so glad they have.
 
I think what Microsoft did with their backward compatibility efforts was really impressive, getting older games to run at 60fps and higher resolutions, even on weaker hardware.

I’m really hoping Sony decides at some point to create a special team that can dive into older titles and modify some .ini files to boost performance.

Imagine if they suddenly announced that Killzone Shadowfall or Medievil now runs at native 4K and 60fps locked. Anyone with even a mild interest who forgot to try it would be all over it to see what the buzz is about.

With how long games take to develop nowadays, there’s real value in going back and polishing these older titles to give them a second wind. No need for full remasters—just a few tweaks to settings could make a big difference. If Microsoft managed it on weaker hardware, Sony can definitely do it too with the Pro.
This is what I was hoping the PS5 Pro would do. If they could've made it super easy for devs to update their ps4 and ps5 games then this console would've been easily worth the price. Finally a way to bring BC on consoles up to the level of what PC owners have been enjoying for years.

But nope. This is why the list of "enhanced games" topping out at 50-70 is paltry....without a patch the boosts we'll get from "boost mode" and this upscale feature for ps4 games is tiny.

When you price your system at close to $800 you have to actually DO something extra to make your customers happy to drop that money! I think the time where console manufacturers can not do much to improve old games SHOULD be over. Both MS and Sony suck when it comes to BC ...if you really think about it it's true. many ps4 games never got 4k/60 updates on ps5, same with many Xbox one games on Series X. Exclusives too!

MS did something great with FPS Boost but it was a half measure ... They stopped updating resolution to 4k for BC titles and many Xbox one games that got FPS Boost had to revert back to One S graphics setting ...then MS just ....stopped their BC program altogether ...very disappointing.

Getting these console companies to put effort into BC is like pulling teeth man and we all know why ...they feel they can get away with it on console and hope to one day sell people a Remaster instead of doing some relatively simple patches for 4k/60 ...it's a sad state of affairs.

I hate to be such a downer but Sony can't even be bothered to update all of their own first party PS5 exclusives for the Pro...that's...not good.

the odds of unannounced upgrades for games goes WAY down after Nov 7th ....if the publisher has "moved on" or deems it not "worth it" to patch their game well, say la vi ...especially if the Pro sells poorly.

I'm getting the Pro but had hoped they'd go the extra step and have a much bigger list of enhanced games as well as something system level that could significantly improve ps4 games. Sony must think that people interested in the Pro are so invested in console gaming (large library of games) that they could have this lazzei fare attitude with the console ...sadly in my case they are correct. It makes no sense for me to invest in a PC at this point other than perhaps to not have to put up with getting scraps from these companies.

Correct me if wrong but PSSR is not even being used for games unless they have been updated with the newest SDK for PS5. So none of the PS4 games or the unpatched PS5 games will use it.

So its a sharpen filter. My TV can do this without having to spend £700.

And no I know that PSSR is just another DLSS and FSR, I dont understand why the PRO cant just upscale universally? That would be much more interesting than being drip fed the "patches" they are bringing out.

EDIT AGAIN - Now I think about it, why isn't the PS4 sharpen filter available on base PS5?

There's no AI upscaling here. This is a PS4 game without any patches. This is just the "Game Boost" mode wich the Pro can apply globaly on all unpatched games. What the game boost actually does has not been techically shared, but it's not much.
To be able to use the Pro's features the game needs a patch.

PSSR is a temporal upscaler. And because of that, it requires access to a game's colour, depth and motion vectors.
So it has to be properly implemented, game by game.

Whatever the heck that Game Boost is doing, it's not PSSR. It's just a spatial upscaler, similar to FSR1 or NIS.

Not on the Bloodborne game no, because it's not patched. PSSR requires a patch to be used. Games needs to be compiled with a newer SDK to support PS5 Pro features. The PS5 Pro is probably running in back-compat mode while running vanilla PS4 and PS5 games. (Disabled CU's etc)

It's going to usher in the "4k Backlash".
One idiot's going to figure out what "upscaling" is and then convey that to everyone else until no one's interested in buying a 4k console.
Word will spread that all of the "remastered" PS5 games are just x86 ports of the original PS3 games that have been "stretched" to fit on new 4k TVs.
IOW - PS5 Pro games aren't really 4k and you can get superior image quality via an old 1080p TV and a PS3 with the original game.
Same thing for a PS2 and an old TV. They're stretched much less than newer PS consoles on a 4k TV.

One could be forgiven for thinking that PlayStation consoles post-PS3 have been an elaborate scheme to sell bigger TVs and the same games over and over again in different packaging.

PS5 can load , decompress and DMA from the SSD without using CPU and GPU power.
It's "an extra chunk of RAM that can read huge amounts of data with near zero seek time" to compensate for the lack of VRAM on the console.
You can't do the same thing on a PC with 8GB of VRAM. You'll be forced to use lower resolution textures.
SSD(RAW 5.5GB/s) → SRAM → Kraken Decompression(I/O) → RAM  *~22GB/s
The SSD drive in the PS5 is a normal product, not magic, but this technology gives the PS5 infinite VRAM, which is the magic(game changing).

It's also a frustrating example because they don't fix the real issue with that game: frame pacing and stuck in 30fps-hell.

As for the whole "revolution for consoles" subject in this thread it's the same as usual.
Console keep chipping away at the stuff that's been a part of PC gaming for years, and when a version of established tech finally comes to console in some shape, it's as if it's some sort of genius new tech nobody had heard of.

Like when console-only gamers realized that 60fps was actually a huge difference, or when they got to experience SSD speeds.

My issue is this could really be available on the PS5 just the same as the Pro. It's a sales bit as usual. Buy the latest and greatest.

The Xbox Series X also uses similar technology, but it has slower transfer speeds than the PS5, uses a bit more CPU, and does not have a dedicated SRAM.
As a result, the SSD is not powerful enough to be used as a substitute for VRAM, and there are some games where texture resolution drops or glue lags occur.

This shows how hard it is to load and apply high-resolution textures from SSD without any breaks during a game.

I remember the years of arguments about cinematic 30fps....then as soon as 60fps is viable all data points to the vast majority of people opting for 60fps and what...at a minimum pc players have been spending money to enjoy for decades.

I think it's the opposite, if in a game that look like bb the difference is minimal, in games that look much better the difference is gonna be even lower.
Its an AI upscaler, it doesnt magically fix other visual issue such as overused CA, if the image quality is shit to start with (unless its blur caused by low resolution) then nothing is going to improve that without going in and changing the underlying code. It isnt some magic wand that is going to fix bad textures, or improve framerates or anything like that.

What it does allow is it gives developers more overhead to improve other parts of the game as you can output at, say, 1080p knowing the end upscaled result will be really good, but we'll only really see the benefits of that next gen most likely when even the base console has PSSR (they could do it now, Sonys internal teams may do that but it means extra work as you'd have to create a PS5 version and a Pro version of the game to reap the benefits and then, weirdly, on some games you could possibly have have an internal resolution on the Pro lower than that of the base PS5).

Though it's true that the PS5 SSD is fast, it does not mean the PS5 has infinite vram. That is complete nonsense.
Just consider that the PS5 SSD does 5.5Gb/s, while the PS5 vram does 448GB/s. That is close to a 100 times more bandwidth.
And then there is latency. An SSD has latency in the range of hundreds of ms, while vram has latency in the range of 140 ns. This is a 10^-3 vs 10^-9.

What the PS5 SSD does very well is that it reduces the need to cache a lot of data on the vram, because it can swap data much faster than an HDD.
This saves vram space, that can be used for higher quality assets.
But it does not mean it can transfer data as fast as vram. It's no where near that.

And another thing. The big advantage of the PS5 SSD is not it's transfer speed, it's the file system, which allows data seeks to be much faster than on Windows PCs.
