PC Gamer video interview with Mark Hamill. First pics of him from Star Citizen.

This looks awesome but that's some hyperbole to me. Drake doesn't come close at all?
That space suit is crazy though. I'd love to see ND take a shot at scifi.

And this is over a year old:

And also doesn't exist. Remember when they also said it would run at 60fps?

It makes me extremely saddened to see the same type of comments come up all the time that follow this same narrative....
All threads that talk about graphics on PC (SC, Cryengine games, heck UE4 graphic demos) or multiplatform games in general that happen to be on PC devolve into how it is all "brute force technology" and no artisanry or realism. This is then contrasted with certain beloved console games 'who use art (NOT REALISM!) to make real human peeeepl'. Then anyone that points out problems of plasuability and realism in some said beloved grames' presentation are confronted with broad claims of "artist intent" and "stylistic choices."
Care to point it out what you mean without being so... idk... wishy washy? Here, side by side.

Sigh.
.

It's the mouths for SC......something sticks out.....but it's hurting my mouth imitating them. Its like they open them up insanely huge

Edit: guy above me got it. Can't wait to see the final product then

I find it disappointing that this thread became a "Uncharted looks better" "nuh uh, Star Citizen looks better" "NUH UH Uncharted looks better!" "NUH UH!!!" thread instead of focussing on the interview and Hamill.

Something that came from the stream. A character model in SC will have something like 1000 bones/control points.

Jeez. They are really going for it

Love that Hamill still enjoys being a part of these things

Maybe you just dislike the way the characters are emoted. If the mouth is opening up in a certain way, that is because the actor opened it up "insanely huge". It is a capture 1:1, they cannot have it open larger than it actually did. That would defeat the whole purpose of capturing the performance in the first place.

It literally drives me insane that you cannot have an SC thread without that kind of stuff. It happens on point, any, and every single time.

I do think that Drake's face has the advantage in the eyes. They look much more naturalistic, whereas the eyes on Hamill's character look like painted cue-balls.

Not surprised insecure ND fanboys found another thread to let it all out. It's OK guys. It's gonna be alright. 30fps alright.

I think it's a "feel" thing perhaps because for some reason you catch the mouth opening extra more in the model rather than in the actor. Perhaps it's an animation thing on the models when using the motion capture. Stuff like this is probably why ND initially hand animated the faces and still touches them up at the end even though they use more motion capture than they used to.

It happens because there's always one "best X in a game ever" post. This thread included.

Pretty much this. The hyperbole made me post those impressive Nate pics.

Specular effect of multiple light sources vs. one sun light source. This happens to real eyes.

Even taking that into account, his eyes look really glassy. There's no wetness, no redness. Maybe it's just the scene, but it looks off to me in the screens.

I don't mean to be too judgmental though. The graphics are still insane.

I do agree that it's mostly animation, but Oldman's skin also looks off.

Am I the only impressed by his ears? Best ears in a game ever?

:p

With that I'm going to agree. That's probably the one area where going crazy with polygons when compared to other games doesn't get as many diminishing returns. VG ears this gen and the last universally look really subpar next to the rest of the head.

Credit where credit is due, people. ND makes cinematic corridor shooters, and characters are a foundational pillar in that branch. They have almost a decade of experience in character work, and it looks fucking stunning. SC is admirable for the incredible tech and effort, but it might be a few years (episode two or three of SQ42) before they catch-up.
That being said, considering the amount of characters they will have and the other myriad of complex systems and environments, it is a feat what they have accomplished.

Well, they capture the entire front of the head (obviously not the back crown) including the neck (hence why there is jowl movement and adams apple movement). So I am not sure what you mean. I can also not hazard a guess as to what the purpose of a capture pipeline would be that doesn't actually capture.

It is not as if this isn't basically the exact same process methodologically speaking. Even if you capture tons of data and points, you still need to clean and touch it up so it works. (they have release two in depth videos detailing said clean up and touch up process even).

This game doesn't use key framing exclusively like older ND titles. Yet, even ND doesn't do that any longer. It would be rather unreasonable for any game or movie to do that anymore anyway as human faces are just too complex to even attempt that without going for a purposefully cartoony look.
but Oldman's skin also looks off.

I just don't see it. I am sorry :/

Especially if you compare it to other skin in games...

I'm not seeing any "issues" with the eyes or mouth of Hamill in the vid and pics, especially considering the lighting. If there anything I could be ridiculously over the top with to complain about, it's that the teeth seem to be pretty meh when you compare it to everything else

But seriously guys. Look at it. Don't you want to make sweet, sweet love to them polygons and SSS?

I cant think that CIG cant surpass anything ND will do in terms of character work. I mean CIG has people that worked on Ryse in their team.
CIG just do not operate like ND does. They do not polish one level and move to next one, they make tech generic, so it will look in every level good, but of course lighting condition can differentiate how people will visualize characters visuals.

Yeah his skin looks fine. His teeth and hair look off. Like... wayyy off. Hamill's hair looks much better though. Don't know if it's improvement in tech since Gary's video or just better character modeling.

Love that all Star Citizen threads turn into a giant competition because people can't accept a PC game that looks fucking outstanding. For the people trumpeting that garbage, shame on you.

Most of you are fine though. This game will truly be a life changing experience for me if they deliver.

??????

Why would I not want, as primarily a PC gamer, for a PC game to look outstanding?

Pretty sure no one has said this, let alone no one has said it doesn't look pretty outstanding and/or impressive.

Hamill's model already looks way better than Oldman's.

I don't know what it was about Oldman that looked so off, probably the combination of dead eyes, no chin, and exaggerated mouth movements.

I feel like his eyes are a smidge too close or too small. Something is off about them.

Take a look at every previous Star Citizen threads. People shit-posting constantly. Jumped the gun a bit on this thread but man, almost every single one gets derailed by people shouting "lol vaporware"

Different actor, different lines, but sufficient enough to make an example.

Perhaps people are just used to low key mouth movements in 3D animation, or maybe it's some uncanny valley sort of thing. Certainly isn't a matter of being exaggerated beyond the performance capture though.

For me, this side-by-side comparison mostly drives home how much better the skin shading is in SC. It's not even a contest.

Well, it is the best character model in a game ever.

This looks mights impressive - I love that we are seeing progress relatively fast now. It seem to be coming together quite nicely, at least in terms of Single Player...

Is there a release date for 2.0? It's the point I wanted to jump in, if it's slightly more optimized than before. The prize will stay the same until release, right?

Its already available for about 1000 of players. They will probably open it for everyone in a week or so.

Still at the same base price? Or will I have to pay more if I wait a week and see how the reception is?

Yep same price. They got rid of all the pass stuff a while ago so your purchase gets you access to everything.

Looks incredible, as a long time SC supporter seeing Mark Hamill in the digital flesh is just awesome, this game is going to something special. I only hope they don't "Naughty Dog"us and cut our framerate in half for a handful more chest hairs.
