Nintendo says the transition to its next console is ‘a major concern for us’

I honestly forgot how they milked Mario Kart. 😶

Yep....Nintendo has built up a ton of popular money making games over the years and they know that all they have to do it pull something from that chest and maybe polish it up a bit and it will sell all over again.
With other platforms having a big focus on backwards compatibility that might put them in a weird situation. Their next console needs to be fully backwards compatible including digital purchases......but knowing Nintendo, they'll
find a way to make the next console unique (gimmicky) enough that backwards compatibility would pose a problem.

The only thing GAF ever wants from a new generation is “exact same thing as current gen but more powerful”.

I dunno. That’s boring. I hope Nintendo gives us some gimmicks again. Not just the same games with 4K graphics.

See....Gimmicks really work in their favor.....lol

Since they've closed the 3DS Line of systems, it's likely going to be a Switch 2 of some kind. They're not abandoning portability.
They would be stupid not to do a Switch 2 IMO. The device itself is incredibly desirable, so much so that even Valve copied it.

Literally “hey it’s a new Switch! But better and with more features — and your existing Switch games are compatible” sells itself.

Translation - "We still don't want to implement an achievement system to our next system that's been widely available for 3 generations now. So we are very scared and prefer continuing to live in our own bubble"

As long as they keep all their development towards one single device and don't split their efforts between console and handheld again, I'll be on board. Assuming they actually make proper releases and not remasters of the WiiU remaster from Switch. I'm still mad I can't get that Metroid 2 remake on Switch . . . if they split their efforts again, I'm out.

No Silksong? = Delivering the pain.
Switch 2: generational leap in processing power and fully backwards compatible. There, problem solved. This is not rocket surgery.

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
Major concern is they would have to build a 2nd Scrooge Mcduck Money bin house all the money from selling everyone the same games for the 10th time.

Land is expensive in Japan.

Reverse groomer.
more powerful switch with better UI and exclusive games and.... oh wait it sold 30 million preorders in the last 20 hours. What are they worried about again?

They shouldn't lose too much sleep over this.
They are providing 720p handheld resolution in 2022. I am very very sure even just the basic spec boost to make 1080p/1440p or standard 60fps will make people buy the same games again.

I don't know anything about Steam deck, but can Nintendo just make a more powerful switch roughly the same size but with better graphics that plays switch 1 & switch 2 games for switch 2

Nintendo has experienced a steep drop off in buy-in from their more casual consumers anytime they simply bump up the graphics.

They know a switch 2 or pro for many isn't a must buy. They need to constantly come up with a gimmick to sell the next system.

NES outsold SNES which outsold N64 which outsold Gamecube

Gameboy outsold GameBoy Advance

DS outsold 3DS

Wii outsold Wii U

It's a very consistent pattern.

It's easy to say in hindsight how Nintendo takes no risks and isn't innovative. Switch was a gamble. Considering that WiiU was a failure them essentially making a fully portable WiiU would be precarious at that time.

Also the switch meant they'd sacrifice one pillar of their business. Rather than having a home console and portable business. They now only have one. For a company to recognize that and commit isnt easy.

Unless they deliver competent Star Fox and F-Zero games, I'm not sure I care. I bought the Switch to be my "third pillar", alongside my PC and candy cabinets. That role is now filled by the Steam Deck. Sony's exclusives won't sell me a PS5, and Nintendo's current crop wouldn't sell me a Switch 2. The only things I'd miss are M2 and Hamster's ports.

I'm not sure how much of a gamble it was.

Their handhelds have performed better than their consoles in the last few generations so it makes sense to think that a dockable handheld would perform well.

What was the risk here?

I think the real opportunity cost here that is in my experience never explored with the Switch is that Nintendo has cannibalized its own success.

Has the Switch been successful? Absolutely. Has it come at the cost of their independent console and handheld sales? Absolutely.

Combined the Wii and DS sold 254 million units.

The Switch has barely sold more than the Gamecube and GBA combined.

It also tops Wii U and 3DS combined, but again, not by a demonstrative number.

I think this is the exact argument that prevents Sony from going all in on a sub model that would cannibalize their primary sales.

You're also talking about fewer peripherals sales and potentially fewer software sales.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo splits these apart in the future and decides to do two different kinds of systems.

“We are not sure yet how we will be able to force people to buy Mario Kart 8 again.”
How often do you change your avatar picture? It seems like it's different every time I see you.

I think Nintendos just waiting to see if this internet thing takes off cause if it doesn't they can save a bunch by ignoring online functionality.

Wait... wasn't it confirmed F2P? Now I can't find it on Google, but I thought I have read that somewhere. If they charge full price, they've gone insane.
I'm no authority on that game. But I thought they just said that the scope has expanded to a full, standalone experience. I don't believe they've discussed price.

Knew Nintendo was going to hit a wall with how they have not reinvested to support switch or their next endeavor going forward.

At this point they have boxed themselves in a corner because of the full digital aspect of switch. They will have to make your purchases work with whatever system they have now to replace switch. Either it be switch 2 or whatever, digital purchases have to work period.

And I don't think Nintendo is competent in that regard to make it all work if history is anything to go by. They best bet is another hybrid or a system that uses the same OS they have built, and hardware wise runs switch games.

Good luck Nintendo. I hope seeing as main engineers that had been with them since 90's left, they seem to not be getting with the times fast enough.

I think their best bet is to continue switch line as their handheld, and create a switch/Nintendo Stick that you can stream Nintendo games from VIA Microsoft's servers like Azure. With full Switch remote compat.

Whatever the new system is, it will also come with a new game boy printer to handle voice chat, so that your speech to text is recognized automatically and then printed on postcards that can then be mailed to your friends. Nintendo will also announce a new partnership with USPS so that you can purchase stamps with famous Mario characters on them for $0.05 below retail price. This way you can mail your friends when you're ready to play a game online, and plan a special day. This is also going to be huge for the next Animal Crossing.

Next shot it's free... they can try to ride the hardware race again
if it fails, they can revert to hybrid hardware

wants to fuck an Asian grill.
They can always quit the hardware business and sit back with a margarita on a beach while playstation, xbox, and steam users buy up more pokemons, animal crossings, zelda, and marios than their wildest dreams. Never gonna happen but just sayin.

Understandable considering they are less diversified these days with only one platform to fall back on.

I can’t wait to see what they come up with though!

Call it the Super Switch. Make the handheld FAR more powerful and, when docking the handheld, make the docking unit a little gaming beast (probably the equivalent of a Series S if Nintendo don't want to compete with PS5/Series X). Just give us a powerful console again Nintendo. We know you can make amazing games for fucks sake so just focus SOME time on making the unit/dock much more powerful.

I won't say I don't care at all for achievements, but I honestly don't think that most people miss it at all in a Nintendo console.
Doesn't matter if you are an achievement hunter or not. Point is that Nintendo takes forever to adapt what's been a standard for many generations now whether it's achievements or a robust online system.

My last Nintendo system was the launch 3DS. I never was a huge fan of friend codes, but you got used to them. I wanted that robust online experience, but it didn't ruin my experience with the game/System. With that said, is paying for Nintendo multiplayer access a hindrance or has it been easily adopted still not having a robust online experience?
