Microsoft Gaming CEO Gives Subtle Dig at PS5 Pro Price: ‘We’re Not Growing the Market with $1000 Consoles’

Raising prices to those levels only grows profit and worth, not users or gamers, just look at Nvidia and the massive rise in cost for GPU's over recent years, Nvidia's value is doing great!.

They aren’t growing the market with their “every screen is an Xbox” strategy either. Ads with hip hop music declaring that your refrigerator is an Xbox wont attract new customers because they don’t exist. Not even their hardcore audience want that…

Obviously Microsoft would prefer to get out of the hardware business entirely, but their hands are tied because that’s where the bulk of their Game Pass subscribers are. If their console subscribers start cratering like their hardware is then they will pull out with a quickness.

You can be pedantic about the numbers all you want. Expensive consoles don't grow the market.

I'm not the one trying to spin Spencer's numbers in foreign currencies. Either way, this isn't about the market. It is about negative growth of Xbox consoles.

Actually they are

Going from Consoles to claiming the mobile market is pretty big growth .

the only thing that will grow gaming is the cloud. That’s it. The market is saturated with consoles and handhelds. Sure there will be some hardware growth but not at the top end it’s just the same people buying newer versions of existing stuff.

Cloud is the answer and everyone here hates that word but it’s what I would put my money on and have.

It definitely wasn’t a dig at Sony. I would much rather pay $1000 for a console than adopt a this nebulous new platform vision that Microsoft is trying to sell.

Hilarious seeing grown adults falling for Wccftech clickbait. How does anyone read this as a dig at the Pro pricing, in the light of their recent ‘This is an Xbox’ campaign where they’re touting easy access to Xbox games?

Let's be clear. Phil Spencer has zero interest in "growing the market".

‘Market’ =/= ‘console market’

Spencer is not talking about other currencies here.

He’s also not talking about the PS5 Pro here.

But didn’t this fuck just advertise that the mobile phone you’re probably watching that dumb ad on is an Xbox? So if we aren’t growing the market with $1000 consoles, are we growing it by advertising that a $1000+ mobile phone can play video games? Fuck this guy is a retard.

So does this mean that we're not getting a super spec Xbox next gen? I remember one of the rumors floating around was MS was going to release a super console next at a premium so they wouldn't take a loss.

Honestly I wonder what the console market will look like when Gen Z is the dominant consumer. It seems like we are past the point of the market actually growing as far as moving hardware, its become more about further monetizing the current base.

We need more games at size of Fortnite, Minecraft etc.

They need to be cultural phenomenon and people who don’t play games should look at it and find them interesting.

I think gamepass is a step in right direction to that end. Lot of work still remaining though.

Mobile phones are ubiquitous already.

Was there no point that logic kicked in between when you thought this up and clicked ‘post’?

Buying parts of a market =/= growing the market

Have they grown the mobile market? It's in decline. Do they have have any hand in growth of any market at all?

What do you think their whole Cloud push was all about?
What do you think their most recent ad is all about?

Bloody hell 🤣

basically, what if in a parallel timeline the Xbox One X was 200 or 300 bucks more expensive, but had a Ryzen 2800 grade AMD CPU inside? in such a timeline, the One X could have acted as a Series S, maybe even outperform it in some titles. in that timeline people would have bought the One X in 2017 and still now have a current gen compatible system

in such a scenario a $1000 console would absolutely make sense, and might be accepted by their customers, if the messaging was "next gen ready" or something. the PC market already kinda works like this. some buy a high end rig to not have to upgrade for as long as possible
One X already sold very bad. Upping price by another 200-300$ would make sales non-existent.

Nvidia's value is doing great!.
Has nothing to do with consumers GPU prices

Not at all what I’m talking about. Mobile games and console/PC games are two separate things.
Not really. Mobile games now occupies a very large chunk on consoles/PC space.

To be fair... he's not wrong.

ESPECIALLY with how much shit costs these days just to survive, your average consumer is not going to go out their way to spend that much on a console.

Phones, PCs and Laptops are a different story as you can do MANY things with those devices, so people are willing to pay premium most of the time.

They are also increasing market share and users in that time though. More people than ever are flocking to Nvidia.

Price alone doesn't determine whether or not a product will sell well and result in market growth, it's perceived value that matters most.

There are a ton of examples of products that have come to market priced higher than pre-existing competitors, and that's then resulted not only in that product doing tremendously well, but also in growth for the industry overall.

People need to get it out of their heads that the only way an industry can grow is through lower prices, when more often than not it's better products and innovation that are the catalysts for industry growth.

the One X as it was released yes. but actually give it a beefed up CPU and make it what the Series S is right now, suddenly you got a future proof system that not only plays everything around the time of release at way higher quality and performance, but also can literally act as a next gen system at the same time.

if marketed that way, telling people that it will be also a next gen entry level system at the same time. I absolutely think there would be a market for that. and with how iterative consoles are now, it's also technically feasible.
as the One X equipped with a Ryzen 2800 tier CPU, would be about on par with a Series S, and the hardware was available in 2017 when the One X released.

It was late and didn't grow the market much like Stadia didn't and that was a better cloud service.

"xbox isn't dead it's now something else please buy our recently acquired games so we can grow marketshare"

It's designed to eat market share not grow it. What market have they grown really? What changed since that ad trying to pretend "xbox" is something else now? Which by the way was predictable as always and is intended to keep the xbox brand relevant and not dead.

It's true in this case. The target audience here already owns a pro or waited for the inevitable release. But I'm not sure why growing the market is such a concern all of a sudden. The latest trend was to cater to a small minority of twitter/reddit users who are cronically online and with non-existent income. Did that grow the market?

It’s like no one learned from the iPhone. Well, Nvidia did.

It’s like no one learned from the iPhone. We’ll, Nvidia did.

The Steve Jobs quote regarding Microsoft having no taste never rang more true.

They have attacked this by thinking lower prices in all aspects will result in success and market growth - cheaper console, and cheap subscriptions (to the extent that they were practically giving it away for free for a period if time). All while completely disregarding the aspects customers value most and get customers talking - progress, innovation and quality.

What that's resulted in is attracting a subset of consumers who have no taste, in some cases no money, and importantly no influence. And then they act all confused, pointing fingers at the competition along with the market environment, when actually it's a "problem" they created for themselves and themselves alone.

That's not what these say, from 2022 and 23, there is no way there is more GPU owners now than 10 years ago when the top cards were 400 quid not 1000 to 2000 pounds.

Spencer is clearly talking about ongoing efforts to grow the market with broader access to games. Why are you speaking in past tense, when he’s talking about current and future plans?

What changed since that ad trying to pretend "xbox" is something else now?

You mean the ad that just premiered days ago? You’re asking what has changed since Wednesday? 🤡

Which by the way was predictable as always and is intended to keep the xbox brand relevant and not dead.

Eh. Even if they go full third party and kill hardware, it still doesn’t stop them from targeting an expanded market with their software.

Wasn't PS1 more expensive than NES , SMS , Sega Genesis & Super NES?

PS2 was more expensive than Dreamcast & GameCube
It wasn't overly expensive like ps5 pro was, and it was a new console on top of that. I certainly didn't need 2 jobs to own one. Sony wasn't telling me to do that either.

I'm actually floored at this point that Phil is still in the job and still giving interviews. He has become a curse upon Xbox like a ghost in the damn attic you can't get rid of and every interview Phil gives is that brief moment he materializes and scares the absolute shit out of you.
