Microsoft Gaming CEO Gives Subtle Dig at PS5 Pro Price: ‘We’re Not Growing the Market with $1000 Consoles’

In the same Bloomberg interview, Spencer gave a subtle dig at Sony's controversial pricing of the new PlayStation 5 Pro console, saying the market won't grow with consoles that cost $1K.

I feel pretty good about where this industry is going. To reach new players, we need to be creative and adaptive of new business models, new devices, new ways of access. We’re not going to grow the market with $1,000 consoles.

The basic PS5 Pro costs $699, but if you add the optional vertical stand and the disc drive, the price increases to over $800. That's twice as much as the launch price of the PlayStation 4 Pro, Sony's previous mid-generation console refresh. The PS4 Pro included a disc drive (but not a vertical stand).

Another way to look at it, is they're acknowledging Sony as the console market leader and there's no use for them compete head on with Sony in terms of consoles. So he is right, in order for Xbox to remain competitive, they need to create their own market segment or explore other areas to grow.

What time is it?
He should have stopped at "we aren't growing the market" as they've failed miserably with low-end and standard pricing as well. Maybe they'll have more success growing the market by calling everything that isn't an Xbox an Xbox.

I don't think it's a dig at Sony. If Xbox were to release a next-gen console in 2026, it would probably cost 1000$. Especially with the possibility of future tarrifs on China.

I would not be surprised if Microsoft pushed releasing their next console well past 2026 and wait for prices to come down. He's talking about the industry as a whole and what is best for it

lets see the prices of your handheld and "pc-hybrid" douche
If MS eats some of the cost and sells the handheld PC at the same price as the Switch2 they might do some damage.
YouTube videos showing the handheld PC playing Switch games at higher FPS than native might make some would be Switch2 customers go the emulation route.
They could cause Nintendo massive problems and then try to buy Nintendo a second time.

Doesn't read like a PS5 Pro dig to me. Reads like they're advertising their thinking: they're not looking to grow the console market. Which means sense, because it hasn't grown in 10 years.

Yep, that’s my same take. It’s a signal to the board and shareholders that they are focusing on profit.

I get what he's saying. The market will not grow with machines that cost $1000 and that's probably a true statement.

If anyone can subsidize a machine it's them. If they could surprise the market with a cheap but hi performing system it could spread like wildfire. It's not like they don't have the software to support anything.

Could be wrong, but given how quiet it’s been on that front it feels like those plans may have changed.

I doubt he is referring to the Pro, but if he is then he is fundamentally wrong as the Pro is not $1000.
In some countries, it's priced $1k+.

Almost a full page, where the hell are Bojji Bojji and kevboard kevboard ??

well... If I must... imo he's wrong.
the price isn't an issue. if they could make a $1000 console in the way consoles are typically made (aka heavily subsidised), and if it would be future proof... it could work.

like for example, if such a $1000 refresh would not only be a refresh, but also future looking enough to also act as the entry level system for the coming generation.

basically, what if in a parallel timeline the Xbox One X was 200 or 300 bucks more expensive, but had a Ryzen 2800 grade AMD CPU inside? in such a timeline, the One X could have acted as a Series S, maybe even outperform it in some titles. in that timeline people would have bought the One X in 2017 and still now have a current gen compatible system

in such a scenario a $1000 console would absolutely make sense, and might be accepted by their customers, if the messaging was "next gen ready" or something. the PC market already kinda works like this. some buy a high end rig to not have to upgrade for as long as possible

You are not growing the market because the gaming industry is in a state of arrested development still making games from the PS360 era. Still unable to innovate beyond the same Ubisoft open world formula. Most people look at how games have simply failed to evolve and see no reason to jump in.

As the head of the biggest banking publisher, he should be giving his teams a mandate to innovate like gta3 did back in the day. But nah he’s content with putting out the same games that even the hardcore don’t feel like buying anymore let alone capture the imagination of a new audience.

It’s depressing watching the half life 2 documentary because it shows how little we have changed in 20 years. It’s still the same damn game.
