Sega Saturn: 5.9 million
PlayStation + PSone: 21.59 million
Nintendo 64: 5.54 million

Handhelds are weird.

Years after the 4DS is on sale and Sony have left the handheld market people will remember the day that one niche RPG sold a couple of thousand more.

We only bring up Conception because there's few PSV/3DS multiplats in general. The ones we do have either heavily favour Vita, or just narrowly favour 3DS. In general, these games sold low amounts combined:

PSV : Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars ( Spike Chunsoft ) { 2013-08-22 } - 19,815 / 34,277
3DS : Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars ( Spike Chunsoft ) { 2013-08-22 } - 5,432 / 12,000

There's also this thing:
PSV : Exstetra ( FuRyu ) { 2013-11-07 } - 11,607 / 11,607
3DS : Exstetra ( FuRyu ) { 2013-11-07 } - 3,173 / 3,173

3DS : Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward ( Chunsoft ) { 2012-02-16 } - 7,890 / 17,913
PSV : Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward ( Chunsoft ) { 2012-02-16 } - 6,133 / 15,454

3DS : Time Travelers ( Level 5 ) { 2012-07-12 } - 9,761 / 22,162
PSV : Time Travelers ( Level 5 ) { 2012-07-12 } - 9,887 / 21,000
PSP : Time Travelers ( Level 5 ) { 2012-07-19 } - - / 11,267

The 3DS "winners" all came out while Vita was 10 feet under too. Maybe the splits would be different today?

how much does the KH games sell in japan? I wonder with these numbers if KHIII being ported to the wii u is being considered.

I'm not convinced Wii U will be around by the time KH3 comes out. We're not seeing that game anytime soon. But since you asked:

normally i would say the same thing, but if the PS4 continues to track like it is, and the game sells mostly in japan, you never know. have there been any ps4 3rd party games that didnt meet the same fate as 3rd party wii u games in japan? I dont recall any big selling ps4 games either.

Outside of Birth By Sleep, the majority of sales for Kingdom Hearts games come from the west.

The Kingdom Hearts games have sold very well in the west, especially in the US.

ah, if the sales are mostly western than i wouldnt think it would make any financial sense, since the ps4 and the xbo are healthy platforms in western markets.

Not entirely personal preference, I think people will take note of the fact that one system is ideally set up for this kind of game while the other has to use some awful compromise (probably swiping the map up and down, completely slowing down the experience) and purchase it accordingly, likely making a Vita version unnecessary and cumbersome. All of the compromises you'd need to make it work you're better off just not bothering.
Yeah, if something offers an advantage over something else, i think that might affect the sales indeed. Regarding those type of games, as a person who havnt played many of those games (that person being me), how important is it to look at the map "all the time" to progress? Is it essencial or is it more in a Metroid or later Castlevania game, where looking at the map makes it much easier to see where you need to go, but you dont need to look at the map all the time.

It's essential because you're charting your map as you progress. And really even if you weren't the maps are so complicated and the scenery so samey that it'd be impossible to navigate dungeons without referring to the map.

That said I still think EO/PQ could be done on Vita or iPhone or off-tv Gamepad or whatever, it'd just slow the experience down noticeably. Charting also feels better with a sytlus I'd imagine.

There's a heat wave now in Japan (not joking), that's probably the reason why MH Frontier is bombing

This is really random, but what were the final LTDs for all the 5th gen consoles in Japan?
If by fifth you mean the one with PS1 and N64 then:

PS1: 21.59m
Saturn: 5.90m
N64: 5.54m
3DO: 700k
Virtual Boy: 640k
Neo Geo CD: 450k (as of march 1997)
LaserActive: 420K
PC-FX: 400K
Pippin: 40k
64DD: 10k
Jaguar: 2k

FM Town Marty who knows...

I don't understand Japanese publishers. I know people like to point fingers at the Japanese gamers and their buying habits, but Japanese publishers are doing about nothing right now, even for hand helds. Where is Konami, Square Enix, Capcom, Namco, etc?

If you look at the western release of PS4/Xbone every single publisher in the West has put meaningful and major releases on the system from day one and have many titles announced and releasing this year and with more coming next year. Japanese Publishers? Do you still own a PS3?

I just don't understand the thought process. You can't just wait for an install base to appear you have to help build the install base. So magically an install base does appear then what? Japanese publishers start commissioning games that are 2-3 years away? It's unfair to say Sony and Nintendo should be responsible for building the base when that is not how it has worked for nearly any gen. It is a collective effort and Japanese third parties are MIA.

If console gaming in Japan is dead it is because Japanese publishers killed it.

2k for the jaguar is holy shit tier.
Do we have any numbers for the Super Gameboy or Gameboy player?

No.

Jaguar was imported by a small japanese company in 1994 for a brief period of time (for a total of 12 games released).

Overall Jaguar sold 125k worldwide, it's a quite niche system.

This is just a PS3 release in Japan, though. I'm predicting 140k.

Yeah, I messed up.

But we have to keep "360" name there now or else I'll have a lot more work to calculate the results. =P

So back around 9-12 months ago, while I had mentioned their thinning slate prior, I started to express serious concern about the state of Capcom.

At the time however, I had noted that we were about to enter a major announcement season for everyone who hadn't played their hand between TGS 2013 and E3 2014.

While I've given some updates along the way, I noticed we're about to start the most dire situation yet.

Within the next couple of weeks, Monster Hunter Frontier G (port) and Ultra Street Fighter IV (DLC + re-release) will be out.

The remaining announced/actually revealed Capcom games for dedicated devices will be:
- Monster Hunter 4G (3DS, expanded re-release)
- The Great Ace Attorney (3DS, adventure game)
- Dead Rising 3 (PC, port of Xbox One game)
- Ace Attorney Trilogy (3DS, port of iOS trilogy which was a port of DS games which was a port of GBA games)
- Gaist Crusher God (3DS, expanded re-release, outsourced)
- Deep Down (PS4, f2p game with randomized dungeons)

They haven't really released that much immediately prior to this, and honestly the above games really shouldn't be taking that much staff to boot..

This company is basically catatonic.

Probably buying time till Resident Evil 7 and SF are ready to release. I'm curious on what Itsuno's team is doing though.

It will be the first +500k Vita title.

Do you reckon? I think it'll do very well, but I think 500k is quite wishful thinking. That would put it on par with the PSP entries, and although I think Vita has done well at transitioning that audience across, I'm not convinced they're all there yet.

As a side note, I hope Sony has a few announcements for TGS, because there's really not much for 2015 at the moment.

I always assumed they had a bunch of mobile projects going and couldn't care less about dedicated devices?

more like crapcom am i right

I think there's a boatload of issues in that company. The experienced staff from Capcom's glory days are almost all gone. That's not to disparage the people there now, but when notable figures leave they can take others with them. Dragon's Dogma and perhaps Panta Rhei are albatrosses around their neck; they hog up resources and don't produce results. Well, maybe Panta Rhei will do so in the future, but we'll have to see them use it first. These two have pushed them towards their outsourcing strategy.

Furthermore, Capcom has not done a great job maintaining their strong IPs, nor have they been as successful in creating strong new IPs as they have in the past. This is partially due to the aforementioned outsourcing strategy.

If Capcom makes another Lost Planet and somehow doesn't make another Dragons Dogma there will be war.

Lost Planet's done, but Dragon's Dogma is probably done in its traditional form too. Since it was so big in Japan, though, it does make sense to make spinoffs that appeal to that audience. Maybe we'll see Dragon's Dogma Quest 2.

Capcom have had a company-defining hit in every generation I can recall: Mega Man, Street Fighter 2, Resident Evil, DMC, Dead Rising, Monster Hunter Portable... Ace Attorney, maybe? Anyway, barring anything unannounced, I think Deep Down could very well be their next big thing, but I say that being in complete agreement that Capcom's current talent pool merits concern.

How many companies were born from Capcom folks?

Platinum Games, Inti Creates, Dimps, Crafts & Meister, Comcept/Intercept, Engines, Tango Gameworks.

Who else? I heard one say Nude Maker, but Wiki says they're of Human Entertainment origin.

I'd say that they have multiple hit series per generation: there's also Ghosts 'n' Goblins, Final Fight, Onimusha, Dino Crisis, Mega Man Battle Network, etc.

Pretty sure that some of those already existed before the Capcom people went over. Not 100% on that though.

Game Republic, but that's gone now.

Arika and Hexadrive are also ex-Capcom. I thought Engines was ex-SNK?
