Media Create Sales: Week 17, 2012 (Apr 23 - Apr 29)

I'm not sure Nintendo printed a second shipment, these are one time shots. Orders open for 4 different days as a bonus since there were some days the site had problems. It's very possible these extra bundles are included into the initial print.

Could be 30K, could be smaller numbers split across the days they're selling them. Really depends how they were handling the order #s, as I believe that's how the whole 30K number came about. Looking at the newer 2ch threads on the limited editions there's people guessing as low as ~1500 units from order #s of people that were able to purchase on the later dates. We're probably not going to get a proper count unless Nintendo decides to hand those out on their next investors meeting.

On a different note, Japanese social gaming giants Mobage/GREE have been dealt a killing blow in the form of new restrictions for booster pack type of in-game purchases. Wonder if this will help steer some companies away from SNS-heavy development.

1500 limited online bundles are much more believable than 30000 and could explain why Nintendo didn't give numbers/trackers asked for them. Since we'll never find out the real number who cares in the end.

Heh, glad to see RE: ORC doing well! Really love this game, having a blast playing it with my friends. The only way to enjoy this game is to have it playing with friends. Playing SP alone will be absolutely horrible.

And looks like RE6 would be HUGE in Japan, no doubt about that!

So, what do people think will come first: 3DS crossing 6million or Vita hitting 700k?

If each sticks close to their norm, it'll be a close race.

YEARLY SOFTWARE SALES
52weeks-sw-120422.png

(Famitsu)

PS3 is about to pass PSP in yearly hardware sales for the first time (maybee it's more appropriate to say that PSP is about to drop below PS3 for the first time).

3DS got a huge decline in yearly hardware sales when missing launch sales (53 weeks after launch), but is climbing fast towards 5 million again. You can't see this effect on the software sales however where 3DS is now about to pass PSP.

PS3 software sales are still increasing and have (roughly) done so since launch. PS3 is finally number one in software sales. I guess we are seeing the peak now.

I like MC more as a tracker, but yeah, in that case.. i think PS3 will make it first!

I also wonder where games like Harvest Moon and Miku are going to end at.

So the 3DS got the PSP audience, along with their high hardware and low-ish software?

Mpl90 sometimes posts and then updates his post with yours later. I could also do it in the format I was using before, and then update with your format (for consistency) when it comes out. That may work.

Having finally gotten my J-3DS a week or so ago I've been very much enjoying Project Mirai and Code of Princess as my first 2 games. Project Mirai is ultimately an easy game but is also well produced and feels like a nicely designed product. It makes me look forward to the next Project Diva on the Vita even more and wonder about where the software sales for that entry will end up. Could Next Project Diva end up being a 100k+ seller on the Vita this fall?

Code of Princess deserves better than 20k sales when compared directly to Senran Kagura in the beat em up genre which has sold over 4x as much. I know timing is essential for game releases and Senran Kagura released in a perfect spot when there really wasn't any other software to buy for the 3DS. I can only hope that Agatsuma is satisfied with the sales of Code of Princess and that the localization rumor about it coming to the West is true. The game certainly deserves a little more love and attention.

Thank you Donny to be willing to let us enjoy those threads right when the data is out of the gate, I appreciate a lot. Good luck with your new agenda also Chris.

Those threads have always been a goldmine for sales-age fans so it's nice to let the fun go on :)

I think you're reading more into his words than he meant. It's almost always going to be the case that hardware week 53 is going to be lower than week 1, so looking at a rolling yearly number there's going to be a dip there. However, this is not so much the case with software; with a muuuuch larger userbase week 1 doesn't have the advantage.

I have always wondered why Japanese trackers don't include PC sales in their data. Surely something like Starcraft II sold easily enough during its launch week to be included in top 10? Right?

Ah! It's not that the software is showing lackluster growth. It's that it's not showing the stutter step that hardware did. Got it. :)

Enterbrain (Famitsu) tracks PC sales. They're just in a different chart. Not sure if they give out sales numbers, though.

There's several places that track H-Game sales but they're supposedly not all that accurate. Not sure if a market for normal PC games really exist at this point.

This is news of rather importance, not getting enough attention in the west. Konami's social games now compose more of their profits then console games Namcobandai has made more then 40 million dollars a month on Idol master sns whose main aspect is complete gatcha's

http://kirik.tea-nifty.com/diary/2012/05/post-4ba6.html

Journalist Yamamoto Ichiro lies out what this means: games that even potentially have RMT on random item-style drops(with a non-defined percentage) are now legally out. Diablo 3 money trade is a certain no go in Japan(not that any blizzard games have been hits here)

The value of any item you can get has to be less then 5-7 times the amount you put in(A.K.A you pay 100 yen for a random item, the item you get back has to be worth less then 500-700 yen)

___

Why this matters:

Companies are now open to lawsuits demanding returns on money spent on complete gatcha's. Based on Ichiro's rough calculations this could be as much as 120 billion yen($1.5 billion)

http://kotaku.com/5899328/heroines-are-a-dangerous-drug-japanese-users-spend-massive-money-on-imaginary-idols
Recently a couple of videos have emerged showing one player's attempt at obtaining a special rare set. Viewers watch and comment as he ends up spending ¥78,000 (US$949) without success. As generous as his donation to Namco Bandai is, this isn't an isolated case. Some people have even boasted spending over ¥100,000 (US$1,217), proving the game to be highly addictive.

The gatcha system is a prime money maker for social games in Japan now, 90% of social games in Japan utilize the system. This is a major Part of the reason we've seen such high profits, and a rerouting of resources from console to social.

It's been rumored for a while, police are finally starting to crack down in the industry. This is just the start.

That's very interesting - that's actually quite common in F2P games in the West, too*. I've always thought it had the potential for a government crackdown since it's essentially not only gambling, but gambling without knowing the odds and really does seem to take advantage of the addictiveness of gambling..

* A couple games, like Star Trek Online and Lord of the Rings have the random gambling boxes drop in the game, but simply sell "keys" in the store. But City of Heroes recently introduced "Super Packs" which are the boxes themselves (that contain both a rare costume set and a rare in game pet) and apparently made a killing on them, something like 600,000 sold in only a few months. (Which might not sound impressive, but not a lot of people play the game anymore)

Man God - Yeah, but DENA and GREE are now AAA industry players in Japan(many people placed the hope of Japan winning back the overseas market on them), with the gacha system being their prime source of revenue.

I remember all my Asian friends in college were huge into these free to play mmos where a bunch of vanity items and a maybe an extra skill point or whatever were purchasable by these methods and I believe that was in 2003 or so.

I can totally see a crackdown on hat boxes from the US government when TF3 comes out in 2022!

Found this translation of a Yomiuri Shimbun article, but yeah other than that doesn't seem to have got any mention in Western press despite the pretty broad implications this ruling has for Japan's social gaming industry.

That really speaks more of how poorly Konami's console efforts are doing more than anything else. There release schedule is a bloody wasteland and the games that do release are mostly flops.

It's a wasteland because of social games... The profit margin on them is insane, with almost no investment, why even waste your resources on console games?

There is a reason Hudson was basically gutted out to become a social game maker, konami has made it pretty clear in stock holder meetings they are shifting their resources to high profit land of social games.

These are primarily regular cell phone games, they cost like $100,000 to make with $10 of millions of profits per month

I hope everyone involved in this gets completely destroyed. DLC gambling is one of the absolute shittiest practice in gaming. The idiots pumping money in deserve to lose it but the assholes that decided it was an excellent business model to nickel-and-dime player for the chance to win the digital equivalent of monopoly money don't deserve it. It's entirely disgusting and I'm glad someone is doing something about it.

Hah. I've been surprised that a thread for this didn't pop up at all, considering how much of an impact it could really have on the Japanese gaming landscape. The 'apps' market that's been erected in the US doesn't exist to that extent in Japan yet, and there isn't something like an Angry Birds that gets 5 million downloads the first day. US analysts have ragged on Nintendo to bring Mario to iOS; Japanese ones have been wanting Nintendo to do this crap with Pokemon. If you look carefully at the last IR report Nintendo repeats strongly that they are not going down this path in their DLC plans. The system caters more to a "suck money out of a few fans" system but in order to find those victims they've apparently been bombarding the airwaves with ads, meaning there's widespread knowledge of GREE/DeNa as a company and their "games" also to a limited extent.

BTW, the thing drawing attention isn't the "gacha" system by itself, but the "complete gacha" system. If you think of it in terms of say, a ME3 Specter pack, a normal Gacha system would be like a standard booster, you might have a 5% chance of getting a N7 weapon. In a "complete gacha" you'd have a 5% chance of hitting a rare card, which you need to collect all 8 of to build a N7 weapon.

The real nasty thing with this is that you have a "5%" chance = ~20 draws to get the first "part," but that the closer you are to completion the more likely you are to pull a dupe card. 50/50 chance of hitting a dupe @ 5th card means chances are reduced to 2.5%. by the last card you have a 7/8 chance of hitting a dupe on a "rare" pull, meaning you only have a 5% * 1/8 = 0.625% chance of hitting that last card. Using the same flawed statistics model I used above (math students that actually did their homework, feel free to chime in) that's at least 200 draws for the last card. Users get tricked into thinking they can complete the set easy at first because pulling the first few cards is easy. By the time they're at 7/8 they force themselves to continue because they put so much money into it.

There's a good web simulator of this process @ http://49.212.5.128/compsim/ -- Buttons up top are "1 gacha (300Y)" "11 gachas (3000Y - save 300Y!)" "Repeat 11 gachas until all 8 cards are collected." You'll routinely notice that it takes upwards of 120,000 yen to collect all 8. And don't forget, this assumes a 5% chance; since everything is run through their server, in a game something like "decrease chance of rare drop to 1% once user has 7/8 cards" could be implemented w/ the user completely unaware.

So basically, the surge in profits for GREE/DENA have been from sucking dry the idiots that fell for this kind of a setup. Alternatives to this would be to collect small amounts of money from a lot of fans, but that requires far broader appeal, likely something they've been working on w/ all the notable hires (see: threads of Squaresoft devs jumping ship to work at GREE). The console gaming space in Japan likely will not change greatly as a result of this because money wasn't being handled by very many people. What we may see (or I hope happens) is the return of companies like Konami, who have become increasingly Social Gaming-centric because of its profitability, return to making more high-quality console titles.

Finally, with regards to FINALFANTASYDOG's interpretation that Diablo 3 is a no-go in Japan: no, that's not what he's saying. He's only referring to the basic Game Center system where the prize obtainable must be 1/5~1/7 the value (or less) of the amount of cash required to obtain an item in an amusement center. He does mention the possible extension of the rulings to officially sanctioned RMTs towards the end, but that's a stretch, and considering how fucking awful it had to get before the gov acted on it, a public RMT auction house like Diablo3's planning would probably fall under much different jurisdictions.

The Diablo 3 is just my interpretation from bunch of different readings, still lots of back and forth amongst commentators, but

I don't see how Diablo 3 can't be fitted into there(crafting items together). Of course this is all still hazy, we aren't really sure what part of the law is being applied yet, so it's a wait and see till Monday or after for official announcements.

Edit:
Also the 1/5- 1/7th, he's talking about the fact in gatcha systems in arcades you can't have absurdly high value items to try and stop people from being tempted with them like gambling.
I've read about troubles they had many many years back that cause this to come into effect.

There really should be a topic about this.

Also kind of perturbed at the amount of money those type of gatcha schemes make. It's basically gambling, except the "casino" doesn't actually pay out anything.

It's the same thing as trading cards though.

I would love a detailed post about how that practice works. What are these games and what are the items people are trying so hard to get?

the whole gatcha/gotcha system and the fact that the ecosystem are supporting these tools explains everything thats gone wrong in J-Delopment. everything. The government had to step in this time. Thats not a market that fraud.

I'll give you an example of how it works in the Mobage Idolm@ster game. Every so often the devs will introduce a set of new Idol's to obtain. Idols in this game are basically Party members except instead of Fighters and Wizards they're Pop Stars. In the game you want the best Idols possible because it makes it easier to compete in the promo events or the various rankings that go on in game which can get you even rarer Idols or items for doing well. You might also be a fan of a certain character so you get all connectionist when it comes to her.
On occasion they'll run a promotion where if you get all of a set of new Idols from the Gacha(Lucky Dip, Capsule Machine type of thing) you'll get a bonus Idol which is usually super powerful or a new variant of a popular Idol. You can't trade to get the Idols or it doesn't count.
You can pay to get one try at a time or you can get 10 at a time slightly discounted to 3,000yen. There are a lot of possible Idols you can get from doing this and there's no guarantee you'll even get one from the promotion, let alone the whole set even if you try it 100 times. Since these promotions are also for a Limited Time Only there's a lot of pressure to complete the set while you still can which is made especially worse by more people falling victim to the Sunk Cost Fallacy as time goes on. It's not that rare a thing to see someone panic and sink a ton of ton of money into the game rather than write off their previous spending.
Basically Gacha is an exploitive system designed to prey on fundamental human weaknesses in order to reap in massive products. Blow them up and drag them away.

Just to play devil's advocate: Pachinko revenues have been going down almost in proportion to social games blasting off (yes 3.11 and other things contributed to this also)

Don't you want the money of compulsive gamblers going to our good gaming industry instead of the rather shady semi-underground pachinko payers?

Both are abhorrent and should be eliminated along with slot machines, Casinos, Online Gambling and other similar abominations. I don't give a fuck if money that used to go into dodgy Pachniko parlours now goes to Konami or Namco Bandai, they're companies, not my friends and they're all preying on people and causing lots of harm just to make lots of money fast.
