In Defense of S.T.E.A.M.: A Great, Original Game Is About To Fall Through The Cracks!

Game's sitting strong on my backlog - need to scratch that VC itch - but I can't really be bothered with it with it this month. Beginning of the year is going to be very crowded.

You know, of course it's not going to be for everyone, and it clearly isn't flawless. But I just wish people would decide based on the demo, and not dismissing it instantly.

This! The demo sold me on a game I otherwise had zero interest in. The graphics work on the 3DS screen where they looked hideous elsewhere.

Graphics just don't look good for a 3DS game. Levels look bland and uninteresting.

There's a reason it's getting ignore.
Several impressions here and in other threads claim the game looks pretty good if not impressive for the platform, and opinions way more articulate than yours have elaborated on the complexity and specific details of each level compared to examples from VC or X-COM. Reasons need elaboration.

If anyone's got a 3DS, then playing the demo's the way to go for a hands-on impression.

Believe me, it is killing me that I don't own this game. I love IS. But the way things are for me, it looks like it will be a very, very long time before I can afford to buy anything. By that time, it probably won't be around. :( Same with Kirby. :(

For how fresh and original the game presents it to be, I think it needs to me emphasized just how conventional and familiar it actually is, and I mean that in a good way. I know I can't be the only one who was quickly sold on this game as soon as I could confirm that it was built on a strong foundation of its turn-based strategy predecessors.

Besides Awakening, what other strong offerings in the tactical genre have we had this generation? My thirst was strong, all the junk about lame art style or having to wait through enemy phase sounds so trivial to me. If you're a fan of these sort of games, what do ypu even have around to compare it to, besides a game you most likely completed years ago and its sequel which you'll likely have to wait at least another year for?

The game has an aesthetic I personally find so foul that I can't look past it, which is a shame because I enjoy Intelligent Systems games, X-Com, Valkyria Chronicles, and like my New 3DS plenty.

I just think the concept behind it is so goofy and unappealing that my interest is minimal. I'm glad some folks like it though.

I feel this. I really want to support a new IP, I really do. But I highly doubt I would finish this game if I bought it.

Art wasnt doing much for me, but I enjoyed the demo, only reason why I haven't gotten this is because I got MH4U earlier and its eating whatever little free time I have this days.

I think MonHun and Majora really hurt this game's chance to be a little enthusiast gem. That and the character models (the art style is overall fine, if not pretty good in some places, like the Library mission or (late game spoiler)
(Land of) Oz
).

I'm part of the problem. I wanted this game since Nintendo first unveiled it, but I haven't even opened the packaging yet because I'm trying save up my gaming time for next week. I'm glad to hear positive impressions to counteract some of the negative reviews.

I'll try to do better :(

The 'H' stands for hentai.
I love the steampunk theme, but damn enemy movements are too long.

Is the final game a lot better? If not, I wait for an update that fixes it, or I never touch the game again.

On the one hand, I want to support new IPs, especially Nintendo IPs

On the other hand, I tried the demo, and Nintendo should make a better game

I really don't consider controversial voice actors to be a problem because they have zero impact on the development, but then again, I realized I tend to separate the artist from the product very often.

I agree. This is the first time I'm hearing that there's a Gamergate boycott angle to this game and it sounds beyond ridiculous to me.

Personally, I enjoyed the demo and the comic book style was great. Steampunk in a Victorian London setting is awesome too. But the enemy turns really do kill the experience. It could have been mitigated by a top down map but I really don't know if even that would be enough.

I didn't buy it because I recently bought a bunch of other 3DS games. But even if that were not the case, I don't think I could have stomached the enemy turns. It's a shame as the rest of the game was nice.

It's weird that anti gamer gate and gamer gate are calling for Boycotts over the voice actors which were likely chosen before this whole mess. I hope this doesn't dissuade Nintendo from perusing more VA in their games

others have frothed at the mouth under the misguided belief that its existence has somehow prevented a new Advance Wars from being released.

We all know it's yet another Fire Emblem game that's holding up Advance Wars
and SMTxFE that's holding up Paper Mario Wii U
:p.

Seriously though, it's sad that this game is being ignored. I have no doubt that it will be in my top 10 for the year.

This is one game I hope for it to become a franchise, but it seems no one is giving it a chance only becuz how it looks.

Yikes. Forgot to buy this, but that's been remedied as of minutes ago. Thanks for the reminder OP! Any X-Com style game that looks halfway decent gets my money.

This thread also taught me that Adam Baldwin is concerned that Fathers will marry their sons to skirt taxes if we make marriage equal for all. Which is hilarious.

No reason to personally attack me. It's a game after all and I stated why I thought it was getting snubbed by the gaming public.

Great write up. The turn and amiibo DLC does bother me but I do plan to eventually pick it up. I just can't justify it at $45 though.

I thought the demo was boring but the name sounds like it's a beta of a game not yet released.

Thanks for the writeup, Watch Da Birdie. I enjoyed the hell out of the demo, and fully intend too buy the game eventually -- it just takes me goddamned forever, sometimes. But now I'm looking forward to it even more.

Wait, what happened with Wil Wheaton and Adam Baldwin to make them so despised? I thought those guys were from beloved Sci-Fi series that weren't allowed to be criticized. Baldwin at least has a miniature strike team in the Firefly fandom.

For what it's worth, I liked it.

I'm not surprised reviews have been so mixed. The difficulty is poorly balanced in places, and critics tend to overreact to unbalanced difficulty (maybe because they're stressed out as it is finishing the game). Others had questionable issues with the game, complaining about things like the lack of a minimap when half the point of the game is fog of war and tactical decision-making.

Anyway, it's a worthwhile game. Check it out.

I shot people I like more for less.
I bought it on launch but haven't played it yet. I'm happy to support Intelligent Systems trying something new.

You forgot to list Wil Wheaton in the bad column. Or someone forgot to tell him he wasn't playing Wil Wheaton in the game. Just awful.

Everything else seems great so far

I've been having a good time with it and I also like the gameplay perspective, makes it interesting to explore to me. It's as if I'm discovering a new place and have to find my way out. Fun stuff :)

Fucking brilliant post. I really hoped people would give it a chance, but people like Dan on Giantbomb keeps saying how shitty this game, which is unfortunate. Yes, the art style and the world maybe lacking in some cases, but underneath all that, its a great little title.

I am looking forward to getting the game when it release in Europe as I enjoyed the demo.

Honestly the mixed reaction the game is getting pretty much shows why releasing a IP is a risky business.

As for the voice actors honestly boycotting the game because they are in it is dumb and pointless as they already got paid when they did the recording.

I find it hilarious after the small outcry over Wheaton being in Steam it wound up having Baldwin in a big part as well. Clearly Nintendo just hates everyone
or voice acting was handled a year ago.

Enjoyed the demo beyond not being able to speed up what can be really slow enemy turns, but man is the art style going to take some getting used to. Really does feel like a cheap knock-off of Jack Kirby at times, though I still really dig everything else about the presentation. Be a shame if another attempt at a new Nintendo IP tanks.

The artstyle makes it look like shovelware.

I agree. Same reason I don't find Hyperdimension Neptunia appealing, they look like the lowest common denominator of their respective art styles. And I'm a big fan of Golden Age comics, but it is so.. bland. I think it's more of a character design issue.

Standard problem. People love to complain about companies not rolling out new IP, but new IP usually fails.

Embrace the sequel!

From what I can tell, Valkyria Chronicles did and does everything better and was only $20 on Steam. I just couldn't be bothered to buy it after playing the demo.
If the criteria is "better than Valkyria Chronicles", you'll never buy another SRPG in your life.

New IP comes out.
"It's not any good. Should have made a Mario or Zelda game."
New Mario or Zelda game comes out.
"Why didn't you make a new IP?"

Nintendo all like "t-thanks".

Looks like a neat game, if I had more dosh in my budget right now I'd probably pick it up.

How about that other new IP from Nintendo which people are excited about.
The difference? One has a cool and fresh artstyle the other ranges from bland to bad.

I don't like the game's aesthetic.

I think the 3D effect is one of the worst achieved in any game I've ever played on the 3DS.

I think the pacing is horrid, particularly the enemy turns in which not only do they take a while, but most of the time you can't see what they're doing due to poor camera placing. In Xcom you either see the enemy's movement clearly, or you "hear them" which adds a layer of tension, in this game you just look at a barrel due to your camera's angle and watch them wander around aimlessly behind it.

The writing and characters just seems off to me. The first two characters in the game were ridiculously stereotypical and I just couldn't find any appeal to either of them.

The Amiibo implementation is the most atrocious and intrusive of any game released so far. I love Amiibos but the way they implemented in this game alone makes me not want to show it any support.

I guess this is a decent game if you want an experience similar to X-Com's strategy on the go but honestly I will give it a pass unless I see it at a budget price closer to half of what it's probably going to retail for.

I also dont have MM3DS for the same reason I don't have Codenane Steam, I'd probably get all 3 if I had more time (and money), I try not to build backlogs.

I usually really like artstyles that are simar to old comic books, at the least in the shading, but STEAM feels kind of flat, lime the colors should pop up a lot more.

Game looked fine in motion in the demo. I'm in for day one release with the Fire Emblem amiibo. Just waiting for May 15th.

I feel bad for not picking this up yet because I really do like the concept of steampunk versions of literary characters fighting aliens but I also prefer more RPG elements and more character interaction/story in my IntSys games. Thought the demo was OK but I didn't love it enough to want to replay levels to get all the cogs/gears. If I ever spot it for cheap I'd probably get it though.

That being said I'd LOVE to see this turned into a cartoon series!
