How can Steam offer such freedom, ex; free cloud saves and online play but console still can't?

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Getting the consoles to pay for these services also helps to breed loyalty and lock them into the ecosystem. That’s why so many of them are so emotionally attached to their plastic console boxes.

If you paid for years of PS Plus, you’ll be more reluctant to add or jump to another platform, because you’ll feel its a waste to not fully focus of the PS Plus services and you paid, and much more forgiving to or defend whatever they do.

The same reason why people seldom subscribe to multiple streaming services concurrently.

Steam doesn't publish 99.999% of their games. They don't pay for devs or invest on marketing or produce physical copies...

Valve is also a tiny company compared to Sony and especially MS. Yet they have way better customer service than either (especially Sony).

They also published the current #1 and #2 most played games on the platform. MS had to spend 70 billion to accomplish something like this and Sony has probably never done it in the modern era.

Valve is just a well run company with no shareholders begging them to nickel and dime the customers. They could so easily say were gonna start charging to play online and for cloud saves and millions would pay. But they know it would open them up to another company coming along and eating their lunch. One of the benefits of PC being an open platform.

I do wish they would make more games but constantly improving the store is also good and Steam Deck is brilliant.

Steam offers multiplayer matchmaking, P2P networking, and the ability to host dedicated servers through Steamworks: https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/features/multiplayer
That's for their own games where Steam is a publisher/developer here, Counter Strike is one of the examples. I am guessing they also offer this service to other 3rd party companies to service their multiplayer capability. There are many other players on the market though.

Got the idea yesterday that a decade old family Minecraft world on Xbox should be moved over to PC, specifically to the Java version which is a bit different.

Had to get Minecraft Realms, a subscription service, to get platform shared worlds, cloud saves essentially.

To access the world through the Realms subscription on Xbox I had to subscribe to either Gamepass Core or Gamepass Ultimate.

Essentially two subs just to be able to move a save file…

Luckily Realms had a free trial and I had some MS reward points so I could use those to get Gamepass Core for online functionality. But things like this shouldn’t be behind paywalls.

Because PC gamers are no mugs, and due to the open nature of the platform, if anyone attempts any bullshit then they are at risk of a backlash along with losing customers very quickly.

Prime example, when Microsoft attempted to shoehorn in paid online via GFWL. They quickly found out, and a lot of distrust PC gamers have towards them and any of their storefronts stems from that and the subsequent fallout.
Thats why pc gamers still have physical games that they could resell, right?

Why exactly are console gamers still OK with subscription hostage tactics in 2024? Why aren't more gaming journalists challenging this in the public eye -- are they that afraid of their industry contacts and reputation being marred? Moreover, how can Valve do all of this for free on a platform where piracy is completely rampant and still be able to offer discounts, mod support via workshop and so much more?

Considering how genuinely mediocre console exclusives get reviewed so highly, so routinely... I'd say it's safe to assume games journalism as a whole is deathly afraid of the 1st party corpos.

What's astounding is how little resistance journalists/influencers have shown to paid online. It's an arbitrary paywall that exists for no other reason but to exploit the closed down nature of the platform and the fairly unaware nature of console players. PC, iOS, Android all let you access online functions without further costs. How the fuck is online functionality in 2024 still being treated like a luxury by platform holders? Especially when said online games are even more monetized and in some ways more basic than the games of 20 years ago.

The lack of pushback to this trash is what's actually upsetting, as any such move generates huge controversy on PC. It's an audience that keeps accepting paying more and more for less. Just get a PC and free yourselves of corporate chains.

Even more astounding are the people screaming at Valve for the 20-30% cut (and valve specifically for some reason, despite basically everyone else having this same cut) when almost half of the money you earn in a sale actually goes into paying government taxes.

I would argue that consoles companys have higher costs compared to a 300 employee company so that gives them more flexibility.

There's only a small group of people attacking the fees side of things and they are only getting smaller.

This is where that bullshit came from:

Along with the epic games store stans. So take that as you will.

They aren’t forced to charge that. They tried it out and realized most of their customer base had zero problem paying it.

I would love to see 3rd party sales numbers on Xbox app. Easily the worst launcher of the modern era.

I always laughed at the fact that I could play Halo's Infinite and MCC online multiplayer without paying a dime on my PC but Xbox owners had to pay for live gold

I transferred a Minecraft world from Xbox to PC a couple days ago. To do that I had to start a Minecraft Realms subscription. Free first time sub. So on PC the whole thing was free. On Xbox the Realms sub was free too, same sub, but I had to subscribe to Gamepass Core to get online access to actually use Realms.
They need to get rid of that nonsense. It makes zero sense.

Yes, but Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo all rely on P2P for multiplayer and none of them utilise dedicated servers for their own multiplayer games. Just look at something like Gears 5 which is P2P still despite host advantage being a major unbalancing factor in every Gears of War game. So Nintendo’s online isn’t worse than Xbox or PS, they are all equal.
Most Xbox Games do use Dedicated servers, it's been that way since the Xbox One launched

No idea why people do that when its the standards on consoles
