Who the fuck is Taul Passi? I see him all over the place and I have no clue why he has a platform.
A Forbes "contributor". Apparently the requirements are, you must be able to produce at least somewhat coherent text output. You may also use ChatGPT.

Seeing Ralph (SkillUp) biting his tongue while Paul Tassi talks about the game, is painful :))

Still in agreement with SkillUp. On the combat the prime and detonate mechanic is so underdeveloped. It's just there as a thing everyone has and you just use it on cooldown. Open the ability wheel, select prime, open it again, select detonate and that's it. It's so bland. You're not paying attention to the actual ability so the ability seems very generic it's just there to prime and detonate. There's no depth to the abilities.

He talks about the writing. So true

He went in on the writing, but perfectly described an increasingly prevalent issue in certain games - to paraphrase him - sanitized, politically correct, dehumanizing writing done by amateurs who shouldn't be writers in the first place. It's so heartening, after all the bs perfect and high reviews from bloggers on game sites, to see that there are still people who will speak truthfully.

This game has truly made me question reviews. I can't see things that differently. Now if IGN said Astro Bot was a 3/10 then at least I would know that they just see the world differently but they didn't. I genuinely think Andromeda is better than this. In fact, I think Anthem is at least graphically much better. The combat is killing me. I feel like I'm playing FF16 except they double everyone's health. There is an agenda here.

Yeah, it's ponderous and why I ditched reviews from big name websites.

Just find a reviewer you appreciate the views from other games and stick with them. Corporate outlets have a stable of rotating reviewers, and there is no editorial mechanism to have an overall consistency with reviews. You are literally banking on a brand name of an outlet and tales from some rando's ass with not even an attempt of context to the greater library of reviews from the same outlet.

I bought the game, and about 6 hours in. I fully understand much of the negative reviews. Having said that, I'm enjoying it for what it is. Combat is fun and the linear structure is ideal for me. Story isn't even there, but on the balance of things, I can see myself giving it a 7. I'm enjoying it more than Metaphor, for instance.

At the moment, I would say that the RPG genre is the fastest degrading genre of games at the moment. Now RPGs are called games that 5-10 years ago would have received the maximum of Adventure game with RPG elements. And I swear to God that everything is heading towards the fact that we will soon be playing: "In front of you is a corridor 15 meters thick at the end of the enemy, you kill him, open the door in front of you is the next corridor but at the end there are 3 enemies" and so on until the end of the game, it will proudly bear the name RPG. And yes, now we have methodical poking of buttons, without strategic planning of the battle is also called RPG =)

But apparently everyone is happy with everything =)

Look at how pretty it is. I have so many clips like this

There are exactly 2 problems

1) This is absolutely dead beauty - linear locations where there is nothing, dead cities where NPCs stand that do nothing and say nothing or say useless nonsense. This world is dead - but yes it is beautiful
2) This does not absolutely correspond to the world of DA, if we are talking about the first games and how this dark, bloody universe was created and it is very dark with a bunch of deaths, executions, murders of innocents, etc.

Well, it's like taking the first seasons of the Game of Thrones. And filming them again but in the color scheme and filters from the Barbie movie

This is as much of an RPG as God of War. In other words, this is not an RPG at all in any sense of the word. I'm okay with that - I'm actually burnt out from those games and how ridiculously large they are. I've also never played a Dragon Age. Having said that, this game does have its issues - particularly story-wise. But it isn't anymore noticeable than your average game, either. I can't tell you what Dragons Dogma 2 was about, or the main story of AC Valhalla, for example.

This is not an RPG, and if it had any other name but DA, it would have gotten its 7-7.5 as a mid-level game and everything would be quiet. But they decided to cash in on the name and reputation of DA, since it is already an established brand. As a result, we lost a Dark Adult RPG (Which is already extremely rare on the market) and got a Corridor Fortnite with RPG elements.

P.S. - Just google Dragon Age Origins Artbook artwork.. it makes me so damn sad... we lost this...

And I thought the dialogue in God of War Ragnarok was bad.

Why is everyone intent on creating dialogue found in Hannah Montana or other equally shit teenage dramas? The voice acting is also notably bad in Veilguard.

But alas, this seems to be the future as developers are no longer intent on hiring on talent but instead of how much of an activist you are.

I think people just want to hate on this game. Ballara or whatever is the character in those vids and she's clearly quirky and will annoy some. The dialog of other characters is just fine, and the characters all have very unique personalities and things they are dealing with like internal conflicts. The writing is not amazing but it's good enough and I enjoy it. I'm not a fan of Ballara either but if you do her side quest you see there is quite a bit of depth to her too and she's dealing with a lot of guilt, makes her character quite insecure.

I think some people are using the "bad writing" angle to mask actually hating this game for its attempt to be wholesome and have a more inclusive tone. Like they see the gender stuff, and then try to spin it as though the whole game was sacrificed for the sake of the "agenda", and use the "bad writing" angle to dunk in it.

The writing doesn't try to be controversial, and the hero is written as overall a good guy. Outside of that the writing explores the characters inner conflicts and dilemmas, traumas, inner values, etc. If you were hoping to be a sarcastic jerk to everyone and pin side characters against each other this ain't that type of game (not that there is anything wrong with that).

My point is for people in the fence, don't let this politics BS prevent you from enjoying a really polished and fun experience.

The dialogues and story in this game are really poorly written. I won't list the childish mistakes - the characters forget what they were talking about 5 minutes ago, repeat the same thing 15 times ect. It's just that what they wrote doesn't work in the context of the world of DA, and sometimes completely contradicts it. That's why people who know the history and are familiar with the lore of the world from the first games have problems perceiving the game. In this video, there are examples of why the dialogues don't work, and why they contradict the world and lore of the game itself. For new players who have just started playing, this is not so obvious. The problem with this game is precisely in bringing this game to the DA setting and the game itself not wanting to be in this setting and correspond to it.

This game is something else for sure. Based on videos I have seen, the character creator is garbage, especially for making a female character, the characters all look like they were made in Sims, the combat looks worse than Inquisition, which I did not like, and the dialog is awful. Yet there are plenty who claim to be really enjoying it. It must scratch some itch. Or maybe it is like Starfield and will eventually the honeymoon is over for the few who are enjoying it. To me, the character creator alone is enough to turn me away from this game. The issues with the character creator can at least be modded out, assuming someone even bothers to make mods for this game. The other issues I do not think a mod could really fix. It will be interesting to see what people are saying about this game in the coming weeks as GAF gamers play through the whole game.

I got the Steelbook and metal poster. I have the PC version, so I don't have anything to put in the steelbook.

Maybe it will make a bootleg dvd of all the official game videos and put it in it.

Because they don't know better or straight up refuse to look at it, it's that rebellious phase of youth that pushes out all the wonderful garbage that we see again and again...They don't know true evil, and so they create it in their head, they also can't help but self insert their ideals/problems, but they lack the talent to create anything subtle or relatable.

Most prevalent in adaptations and shit sequels we see this mentality take over, oh sure Lara Croft COULD be a globe hopping Tomb Raider whom is sophisticated, clever and a badass survivor as she was created that way, hell there are so many interesting things you could do with that story and world!

You just described every jrpg yet nobody complains about the issues you presented in those games, because, they're japanese. This threads keeps delivering the best double standard takes I've ever seen.

JRPGs and CRPGs are completely different genres with a few superficial similarities. I don't complain about Call of Duty not having a sprawling labyrinth with keycards and a storyline delivered through audio logs, and I don't complain when System Shock doesn't have a cinematic experience with visceral shooting.

Bioware has thrown away decades of tradition and experience to deliver a subpar JRPG instead of a CRPG.

One thing I absolutely love about this game are the accessibility options - you can customise difficulty in multiple areas even after setting 'Difficulty'. Exceptional stuff, and more developers need to do this.

I dont think it's fair to compare Dragon Age to crpg's because it hasnt been one since Dragon Age Origins. Veilguard was never supposed to be a crpg, nor does it try to be one. It's an action adventure game with rpg mechanics like Mass Effect. If you were expecting them to make a crpg after they gave us DA2 and Inquisition thats on you. The only thing I will give you is that Veilguard is no doubt NOT a game that was made in 10 years. It looks/plays and feels like something made in 3 years at best, which means it went the chopping blocks a lot of times just like Starfield. Both have the same overall issues.

a fine tune game shouldn't need difficulty/accessibility options.

Doesn't need it - but why not give players more customisable options? For instance, you can tweak the aggression of the enemies, the damage they do, the damage they receive, their resistance levels to magic etc, all independently, allowing you multiple ways of playing the game.

if developers need to do this. the better option would be to incorporate them
"in-game" as part of some mechanics/items or shit like that. i would even say that difficulty options are used as a crutch.

Nah. Just give me some toggles. I don't always have the time to sit down for 10 hours of gameplay a week. People can enjoy the game just as much with these toggles rather than explore/seek out items in-game to enable them. Let everyone enjoy it their own way if it doesn't break the core experience.

Yeah, I was just saying this in the OT, such a (bad, IMO) difference in the designs of Darkspawn, Ogres, Demons etc. , also the elves look weird, they look sort of like pretty goblins.

And the gameplay, Jesus, is piss easy, remembered the 1st encounter with an Ogre in Origins vs. here, what a major difference.
Playing on the 3rd difficulty and managed to kill a lvl 25 Champion enemy with absolute ease, me being lvl 14, it may be an ARPG now or whatever, but it's still based on a progression system, this shouldn't be this easy or even doable.
And the fact that your party has no HP, lol, what is this, what's the point of having them then, so bad.
