UE5 so you already know it's going to run like shit.

I'll probably go into next gen with a nice little backlog of UE5 games I'll wait to play in a non subpar capacity
Shader stutters can't be brute forced with better hardware. These games will always be infected with those stutters.

Dead Space Remake when i've played on pc was smooth as butter.
i played dead space 3 months after launch. stuttering mess.
then again 6 months after launch. stuttering mess.
i played it again 18 months after launch and it was a suttering mess.

i dont care what gpu or cpu you have, it will always have a stutter. maybe you have a cpu from the future.

Yeah but reflections are only a small component of the overall image and aren't used in every area, so while it looks better it's not that significant to the overall look of the game. Which is the case for most RT solutions. I find them to be a bit overrated in general given the typical performance hit unless they are done intelligently (like SM2). They just don't make that big of a difference most of the time if the rest of the game is using good reflection techniques that aren't RT.
Nope. RT reflections arent only being applied to puddles and mirror like surfaces. RT reflections can reflect lighting to bounce from one object to another creating its own gi solution. thats why reflections are literally called diffused lighting. They can and do enhance the overall image.

callisto has the best example of this that John points out in his review. there is no RTgi in this game, just rt reflections and shadows. and they apply to more than just reflective surfaces.

Timestamped:

the reason why last gen games didnt benefit from this is because they used low tier assets that didnt have reflective properties. as we move to next gen and better assets and materials are used, you will begin to see reflections affect lighting more and more and thats where rt reflections really shine.

Like I said, the effect is subtle and probably not worth the performance hit in my view. They'd be able to crank up the detail substantially more without it.

Is it me or the OG is scarier in this scene? There's something with the film grain and low resolution that reminds me of an old VHS and this adds to the eeriness and unnatural atmosphere. I've never played the original, so it's not nostalgia speaking. As beautiful and atmospheric the new game is, there's a little something in the original that makes it a lot more frightening to me. I probably would shit my pants playing the PS2 version, but I would have no problem with the remake.

Edit: Watched the full video and Tom shares the same sentiment. The found footage VHS quality definitely takes the dread to a new level.

The crisp and cleaness of the remake does change the feel from the original. But as a game that's expected to show off graphical upgrades I think it's mostly a fine decision.

Their filter options could have been more extensive with the grain and grittyness though.

I don't trust that Alex guy. He exaggerates most of the time. According to him Dead Space Remake or Black Myth Wukong with RT are stuttering mess, but I have played these games and still had a joyful experience. I also can't understand why he's so obsessed with locked 60fps, because in 2024 pretty much everyone is playing on VRR displays.

Autistic retards and their fucked up triggers have taken over all discussion regarding graphics.

I'm happy with performance of the game (around 80fps at 4K DLSS Balance + max settings + RT), but stutters are there for sure like Alex said :p. They are not game-breaking, but they do detract from the experience.

But the graphics in this game look phenomenal, not even Alan Wake 2 impressed me that much. Overall, I'm surprised how much I like this remake, it's like the original game, but better (except the Angela character model :p).

Playing on the similar settings and the stutters aren't that bad. They are noticable though.

Can someone explain to me whether Silent Hill 2 will be enhanced by the PS5 Pro through "Boost Mode" without having a Pro patch?

I'm a little worried about waiting for the PS5 Pro to arrive and SH2 doesn't get a Pro patch at all, or if it does, it won't be until like 2025.

I'd rather play the game relatively soon :(

the framerate is awful at points. so it will definitely run smoother on the Pro.

it would also be a missed PR opportunity to not actually release a patch

DLSS Performance better IQ than Quality PS5.

Hardware RT Reflections only on PC. Cubemaps + SSR less distracting than either PS5 reflections.

Lumen AO and GI in PS5 Quality.

RTX 4070 performance DLSS Balanced High Settings + RT bode well for PS5 Pro.

PS5 Textures lower than Low, but to be fair they don't scale on PC for some reason as High and Low show no difference.

Medium Shadows Setting on PS5 Quality.

Fog flickers noticeably on PC at higher settings.

I know you both were skeptical about the level of fidelity of SH2 compared to Naughty Dog’s work. Check some screens below. Every room has their high resolution assets, meaning, perfectly rounded shaped cups and cigarettes in the toilets. :D Also, you can break almost every mirror and car window - actually important since cars might have health vials and other goodies.

PS5 Quality screen dump below:

Can't even imagine how it looks in max settings on PC. I did some back and forth between performance and quality on PS5 and it's absolutely shocking the difference between those modes. It's like skipping a full generation of graphics in some areas. Even worse than Callisto. Anyone currently playing SH2 on PS5 in performance mode should be cursed by 1000 Pyramid Heads.

What’s up with this? It’s the second UE5 game on PS5 that uses low textures.

Also, the texture setting is probably texture cache size rather than texture quality. You won’t see a difference if you don’t run out of VRAM, but they will get butchered when you do. Did they test on an 8GB card?

I played the demo. Other than the traversal stuttering, zero stutters. 🤷‍♂️

Traversal stuttering (that also is present on consoles) =/= stuttering mess. In the launch it has also had shader compilation stuttering.
Yes, its traversal stutter, not shader stutter but its not like UE4 and UE5 traversal stutters that only happens for a brief when you cross an invisible boundry and switch to the next level. In dead space, this happens for several seconds every time you enter an area. And no, it doesnt happen on consoles. its a PC issue.

Again with this? This was before some patches!

It is issue on consoles too.

Other than the stuttering, there is no stuttering.
There are (were) 2 types of stuttering on PC. From shader compilation and from traversal.

Need a drawing?

Don't know if it was patched, but I tried it on my rig and it was definitely nowhere near that bad, even compared to the 4090 below. I also asked on the Steam forums and there was a big split with people claiming they experienced horrible stutters and others saying they barely noticed them. I did notice traversal stutters, but the example above must be the worst case and I never had anything of the sort.

The game is also Very Positive on Steam with 91% positive, so I doubt it's a stuttering mess or the reviews scores would reflect this a lot more. Jedi Survivor to this day is still mixed with only 67% positive reviews. That IS a stuttering mess.

Game uses like 9-10GB (and that's reserved) vram on PC with hardware RT so it shouldn't have problem using high res textures on PS5. Unless it also uses a lot of system memory, this could fuck up things on a console with 13GB available in total.

It hasnt been patched since February of 2023. DF did a year end review of the game and i played it recently.

It's possible better CPUs are going to mask some of these issues. I have an i7-17000k which performed very well up until this year when it simply refused to brute force Dragons Dogma 2 and Black Myth. Maybe you two have a better CPu than I do.

Browsing the steam forums and talking to people here or irl, I am convinced that a large majority cannot easily perceive stuttering and micro-stuttering. There is no other explanation. I wish I could be like them, but for me it's the worst technical issue a game can have and I immediately noticed it every single time.

Yes? It's not been patched since February of last year. it received a total of 1 patch after launch and then EA abandoned it.

My CPU is most certainly not better than a 17000K lol. I assume you meant 10700K. I have a 13900K and do notice the annoying traversal stutters in Wukong, but they're tolerable because they happen sporadically and thankfully almost never during fights. I think I had one instance of a big frame time spike during a fight in my 80 hours. Otherwise, crossing boundaries always results in a little hitch, but meh, seen worse.

Well, Jedi Survivor and Dragon's Dogma got horrible scores, so clearly, when it gets that bad, they can perceive it. In my experience, Jedi Survivor and DD2 were not what I'd call enjoyable experiences. Dead Space and Wukong weren't perfect, but definitely playable and enjoyable. Refunded Dead Space though. Had way too much stuff to play.

yeah I meant 11700k which is much worse than the 13900k and should explain why you dont see many issues. A $600 top of the line CPU should handle these traversal stutters better.

Wukong is fine on my PC. The issue is when i turn on RT and start fighting enemies. Once i kill the enemies, the game is fine with no frametime spikes. i have the same issues in hogwarts which runs fine without RT but completely breaks down with RT on in big cities even with the GPU load hitting only 50%.

my friend is using my rtx 2080 paired with a 7800x3d and while hes always GPU bound, he has no issues with those frametime spikes.

Yes? The stutters from compilation are gone so I wonder why they didn't patch anymore...
they might have fixed shader comp stutters with that one patch, but the traversal stutters are there. believe what you want to believe. i am done. this conversation is over.

Fog isn’t reflected even with maximised RT quality so you get a bizarre clearer mirror world in puddles, revealing details ahead that should be fog-obscured.

Doesn’t look like any of the ‘upscalers’ are helping filtering out moiré patterns yet and the wind-blown leaf/litter subtracts more than it adds visually.
