digital stores are easy money-makers for producers.
sony doesnt want to mess that up.

I'll give you that it is ridiculous to imagine getting government involved in something like this. However, were the issue more relevant to the current government, other forces can be brought to bear that do not violate the above law. Lateral pressure could be applied. Regulation could be implemented or removed to promote the company to behave according to one's political will. Tariffs could be applied to a whole industry to wrangle in one "bad actor" company. Censorship could be selectively applied, especially if the company is a social media company or promotes user generated content.

The term lateral pressure refers to any tendency (or propensity) of states, firms, and other entities to expand their activities and exert influence and control beyond their established boundaries.

Furthermore, there are other avenues for pressure such as the bully pulpit.

Just because what one does is legal does not mean they are safe from a determined government.

Also, "Show me the man and I’ll show you the crime."
