I think the one strung plank might be considered a baritone Diddly Bow - but I'm not sure you couldn't just say low tuned, one string lap steel. It's one of the early blues instruments.I don't even know what the name of the wooden plank instrument with a string at 2:12 is (seems very DIY) but it sounds awesome
I love Bowie but there's something extra haunting about this version
disagree -- Buckley's version is a beautiful thing all its own, wonderful, but it doesn't surpass Cohen. The key problem for me is that it lacks the bite and sarcasm that was often dripping from the original verses.
in this version for example:
He tended to sing it with very different verses by the way; the Buckley one combines lyrics from Cohen's first recorded version with the ones from the live rendition above, which had very different verses.

(not the original recorded version but this performance fucking rocks)
I love covers. I can't think of many off the top of my head because I have bad memory. I will have to peruse my music collection. But, as I was scrolling through the comments one cover came to mind. I don't know if it's better, but it's pretty damn good.
Also, Disturbed's cover better than Simon and Garfunkel? Worst take ever. I absolutely hate that cover. I also hate that people like it.
Honestly, there is nothing better than a good cover made by the best band
These are just two completely different songs though?Original < Rod Stewart's Cover < Alphaville's Cover
Hammerfall's cover of My Sharona sounds really good.
Here is a cover song "rabbit hole" for you ...
