I don't really think Joaquin Phoenix is an amazing actor. He has a statuesque face that is magnetic to look at and I think that does half the work. I feel the same about daniel day Lewis.

You know who's a fucking great actor? Peter serafinowicz.

Finally, a palmares I'm not completely appalled with ! :messenger_ok: Joaquin won Best Male Actor as expected, and "Ford v Ferrari" and "1917" won deserved trophies as well.

Fantastic win for Parasite ! Deserved for a Korean movie industry that litterally trumps mainstream American cinema lately ! Many of my favorites movies this past decade were Korean, be it thrillers or comedies, and I hope it gets people more interested in it !

Never seen Parasite since I am one as well and thrillers bore me to death. Is this a first though? I mean a Korean film beating all these pedowood movies anyway.

Joker was fine but he played the exact same character before. (The Master)

After all the rave reviews, it was a cinch for Parasite given it's amazing tone changes.
Finally Deakins wins an oscar.
Best soundtrack should have been given to 1917 as Joker was too similar to Chernobyl.
Todd Philips or Sam Mendes deserved the Best Director win.

Parasite is funny, beautifully shot, a wonderfully imaginative tale told brilliantly. Saw it last night and loved it. Don’t think the win is political tbh. I loved Joker and I loved Parasite - quite happy with either one winning, both amazing.

I'm OK with Parasite winning best picture since I didn't love 1917. BUT, handing Boon Joon Ho the Oscar for directing instead of Sam Mendez who did a masterful job with 1917 is a travesty.

Parasite fully deserved the award, was the best film out of those nominated and for the first time in a while, the Best Picture award felt deserved in comparison to the safe wins like Green Book.

Joaquin is one of the greatest actors around and fully deserved his win, I would had liked to see Adam Driver to win too but either of the two was a good outcome for me.

I am glad 1917 didn't win Best Picture or Best Director, as outside of it's amazing achievements in filming and big set pieces it was a very average film.

So.. given Mato Mato mentioning politics and brap brap implying it won because no white people, I should probably give my political take. I'm a left-of-centre guy who feels abandoned by the modern left so you know my biases. Spoilers below so don't open them unless you've watched it already.

So the name of the film relates to its key theme, parasitism. We start with a poor family living in an absolute shithole unfit for human habitation, but they're a bit lazy, or rather the parents are. The kids have a bit more about them.

The son lucks into an English tutoring job working for a wealthy family. The husband is away working most of the time in your typical Asian executive way, the wife is mostly useless given the maid does all of the work in the house and also looks after the kids. The son gets an easy gig and eventually the whole family worms their way in, displacing the original driver and the original maid. The rich family go out for a camping trip, the 'parasite' family is living the life of riley in their absence, and shows that no matter the beautiful surroundings and the trappings of wealth they will still act like trash. The original maid shows up, as her husband is living in the basement, unknown to the rich owners. He needs food, etc. I won't spoil the story from there but the greed of the original parasites and the new parasites leads to them killing the host. One could argue that the wife's own parasitism is what led to all of this, too lazy to work herself and thus letting her husband's money do the work instead.

The rich family express their disdain for the poor help, commenting on their smell, the wife happily dismissing the old 'help' on the flimsiest evidence provided by the parasites, there is a definite nod to the life of luxury breeding a certain coldness towards those of lesser means, but at the same time the poor are presented as grasping - killing the golden goose in the way the right often depicts. There is also a subtle nod to the idea that even if you give them the house they crave, nothing will ultimately change, and they'll just bring it down to their level. At the end we see the son dreaming of getting rich and owning the house, before focusing back on their original dank sub-basement. Perhaps the fire is lit within him to go out and make something of himself, or perhaps he'll remain a grifter like the rest of his family. The important thing it there is a nod to the idea that a person might aspire, if they're from a poor background, to lift up those around them by working hard and getting ahead (though I fear that, both in real life and the film, those around them may just drag them back to the gutter).

An interesting detail some may miss is that the portrayal of rich and poor Koreans mirrors what I saw in Thai TV and cinema - there's a certain way of portraying poor people, as being a bit sneaky and lazy (which has an element of truth in Thailand due to the tendency for families in the poor areas to send their prettiest daughters to work the bars in Bangkok [or sons if they don't have one - why do you think ladyboys are a thing?] while the family swigs beer, buys the latest phones and pisses the money away gambling and riding around on new motorbikes). The rich are blemish-free, but the poor are often depicted as not too attractive (look at the parents of the parasite family in this case - the kids are shown as having a bit more about them, doing most of the work to get the family in, so they're presented a bit better though still with a hint of that poorer Asian look - reflecting the idea that the parents are themselves parasitical to their kids).

Anyway that's quite enough over-analysis! Enjoy the film.

Finally Deakins wins an oscar.

Best soundtrack should have been given to 1917 as Joker was too similar to Chernobyl.

1. It is Deakin's second Oscar but was fully deserved.
2. 1917 had a painfully generic soundtrack and even if Joker's soundtrack was similar to Chernobyl it was still ten times better than any soundtrack I heard in film, was similar to Birdman how the music really elevated the film.

Oh yesss, forgot he won for BR 2049. Hmm, I'll just agree to disagree with you there. The music in 1917 is what ratcheted up the emotions and tension in a few scenes like the Night infiltration and especially the final run to the camp. OTOH, Joker was either filled with slow heart beats or had music eerily similar to Chernobyl scattered about. I liked Joker solely because of the acting and direction, not the music. I agree about Birdman though.

Edit: Forgot to add that both the Blade Runner films became much better thanks to the music.

Joe Pesci or Al Pacino should have won in that supporting category. They were way better than Brad Pitt.

I thought Pacino was unbelievable, like mind blowingly good. Not sure why Pitt is getting such love for his role. I mean yeah he did good and it was fine? Very good? I just don't think it's even on the same level as Pacino though.

Glad the Irishman did win jacksh#t. I´d rather watch this, than The Irishmen. 3h of NOTHING.

I liked it but definitely would put it well below Goodfellas or even Casino. It was WAY too long imo and agreed wasn't really award worth except I would have liked to see Pacino for supporting actor.

Looking forward to seeing Parasite this coming weekend - have been interested in seeing it for a long time had no idea it would get to this level of hype and acclaim.

Disappointing. Parasite win seems like the result of anti-Joker campaign by Collider and their woke colleagues. A safe choice and also a """historic breakthrough""". Best Picture has truly become a Random Picture in the last decade.

Parasite was actually the best film out of all of those nominated though? It is the first Best Picture win in a while to feel deserved.

The Lighthouse or Uncut Gems were the best films of 2019 imo though.

Not as good as the Joker :messenger_sunglasses: . Also, makes me laugh that Twitter thinks Parasite in the title is in referrence to rich family.

I loved Joker but thought outside of Joaquin, the music and cinematography it was quite average with it's dialogue and plot.

Still a strong 7.5-8/10 though.

A lot of people on Twitter are stupid as fuck, I am not surprised lmao.

Having watched 1917 and Parasite this weekend, the better film won out. 1917 is very well crafted, but honestly if you took away the camerawork, it's not that special. Parasite is four movies in one and deserves the praise.

Pretty shit movies all around.

Parasite wasn't even remotely special, nice sunday movie i guess, guess asians so it was the hipster thing to make them win.

Once upon a time was god awful, but hey got to feed the hollywood actor pool

1917, yet another ww2 movie where we already got 3000 movies from. Its a tiresome and overly done concept by now. Guess the one shot angle could make it look special that's about it.

Joker, wasn't impressed by it. Your typical gotta try to act as weird as possible. All the fake outrage by the soys on the left probably gave it its oscar at the end of the day. Would i think there was a better actor for this year? not really. As there wasn't really anything of quality pushed out this year.

I think oscars should be holed once in the 5 years. every year is just to much really . Just not that much movies that come out of quality which just makes it a dumpster solution.

Year has been pretty bad for movie watchers i would say.

Yeah this is definitely the guy you wanna listen to about movies. Please tell us more about how they're all shit and how good Naruto and Bleach are lmao.
Again your taste is bad nothing he can do about it.

Naruto putted anime on the map for many people. The fights in it where awesome, the enemy's where great and it wasn't sugar coating people with nobody ever dying. People dropped dead like flies everywhere and it made u wonder who was next in the next episode ( game of throne kind of feeling ).

Hey kids lets go into this forest to play a game so u can became this legit ninja, oh wait u dead.

68747470733a2f2f73332e616d617a6f6e6177732e636f6d2f776174747061642d6d656469612d736572766963652f53746f7279496d6167652f48716d514e6b794b4b32414358673d3d2d3231303935343031352e313433313131616532366637366437322e676966

Then u had awesome fights like this:

653c1e6dc4ac7dbd9cdf0a6ed964fb66.gif

Probably up there as the best fight anime ever had to offer in any series. This completely talentless kid vs this demon kid that blows everybody up with his sand in seconds and he puts up a dam good fight that really drags u in with great animations. The 3D camera usage was really next level at that point. It was incredible well done and probably opened the series to most people as u had to see it. Everybody in my class was sure as heck watching it and talking about it.

Then u got stuff like this, by far my most high ranked enemy in any of these anime's and really well done character.

Itachi-1.png

Pure evil, total control, extremely skilled, barely moves. Watch him in the eyes and u are locked up in his torture dungeon before the fight even starts getting stabbed for the rest of your entire life.

DevotedDefiantBlacknorwegianelkhound-max-1mb.gif

Oh hey how you doing?

9348A965CF59A6950AC54D89FD05FB71304B50FF

Oh wait you're dead, not really just kidding. getting stabbed for the rest of your natural life that passes in seconds in the real world.

There where tons of interesting characters and well worked out story's. Sure it dragged on but so does any other anime that isn't a season or two type of series. And yea at the end it became borderline bad but that doesn't dismiss the early series which was pretty much at its peak.

Then about Bleach.

Incredible interesting characters with lots of good fights in there. Aizen was probably one of the best main villains in any series. A skill pretty much the same as itachi but a bit different to the point he's simple not killable unless he chooses not too. U never know where this guy is even if he's straight in front of u. Sure the ending it became dragon ball z power struggle matches. but the fights with espada's and the characters like that toxic professor where absolutely fantastic. It was a dragon ball z and naruto hybrid.

I loved every bit off it after they entered there spirit world.

I still hate they never made it further to showcase u the king place as the series stopped after it because it catched up on it. Not much of a anime reader. But would have loved to see the bankai of kenpachi animated properly.

Then attack on titan, probably one of the best first seasons. The brutal killing that goes on and this major threat is well done and probably one of the fast anime that blow up in western audiences ( it was pretty much a flash back towards naruto's starting area ). Everybody i know here was talking about it when u saw the titan in the wall. It was a instant hit. Sadly season 2 came way to late and it was total shit to the point nobody cared anymore. Season 1 however was great and absolutely solid choice.

Seven deadly sins, didn't really like it yet my friends do. They all love it. It's a hit or miss i guess. Still fights in it where awesome when they did happen.

Hunter x hunter, absolutely fantastic series, sadly the last season dragged on a bit to long in there freeza arc but in general really well done anime on its own that doesn't feel like its riddled with fillers.

I wonder if they realize they essentially gave the Best Makeup and Hairstyling award to Fox News.

I'd be interested to know what you think WAS a good movie from last year, considering you seem to think 1917 was WW2 somehow.
