Isn't the argument that Top Gun made so much money and showed it's still possible to be popular without being a superhero shill-movie like No Way Home?

We already knew that lol. Theres been plenty of non superhero movies that have done well... most of them are connecting to already existing IPs, though, including this one.

Another cool aspect of Top Gun is that it brought back a beloved old franchise without the need to shit on it or "subvert expectations"
It's the inexplicably rare straightforward franchise revival that captures what made the original fun and gives you more of that. They know you are there for the cool flying scenes, the interpersonal drama, seeing some beloved characters again, the action and shirtless men at the beach, and that's what they give you.

The beloved main character isn't super depressed and miserable, there isn't some new "diverse" character that gets the spotlight and is better at everything than the established characters, it's not some plot about how Maverick hates flying now or about how he finds out that the military is bad and he should be ashamed to be a part of it.

For once it felt like a late sequel that wasn't made by people who hate the original. And it was super successful too which is nice.

Not who you're quoting, but Everything Everywhere was the first movie in over 20 years I've actually turned off/walked out of, and I average 2 movies a week, so we're talking a sample size of a couple thousand. The last movie I did that with was Nic Cage's Bringing Out the Dead in 2000, which I've long held as the worst theatrical release movie ever made. Everything Everywhere stands toe to toe with it for effectively the same reason. Bringing Out The Dead was literally 2 hours of meandering, directionless scenes amounting to nothing, with less entertainment value than watching paint dry. Everything was 2 and half hours of inane nonsense. Pointless directionless scenes under a guise of multiverse that ran it's shtick into the ground within the first hour, ultimately amounting to nothing but a big budget TikTok stream of stupidity.

It was all subtext about an Asian mother expecting her daughter to follow tradition, while the daughter did not want to. I get that it was missed on many, but it's a beloved film and won every award worth winning. Not everything is for everyone (no pun intended lol).

Edit: it was also about the mother wondering what kind of life she could have led had she not herself adhered to tradition. It's a great fucking film man.

It’s 2023 and it’s still the best thing people can do with an Asian cast?

Hey, Hollywood: how about you make a movie about an immigrant family that went to great length to integrate and embrace the Western culture only to find their kids not wanting that culture and the resulting struggle it brings?

Edit: You edited to give more context, so it looks like they tried the above. Will watch, after all it won an Oscar, interesting to see how tastes change throughout decades. Still think Tar should have won.

It took nearly two decades between Crouching Tiger and Hollywood taking any Asian film seriously with Parasite and Crazy Rich Asians. It's going to take some time.

The only movie I watched from the nominees list was elvis, which was pretty good. Guess I'm out of touch when it comes to cinema these days. Cool that Brendan Fraser won an Oscar. He always seemed like a cool dude.

Subtext or a credit scene payoff doesn't somehow magically vanish the remaining 2+ hours of pointless nonsense you've forced the audience to endure. Like modern art gallaries claiming there's a deeper meaning to gluing banana peels or socks to the wall, it's ultimately just trash stuck to the wall. Self indulgent tripe.

Having subtext is fine but it also needs to be entertaining in some way. Neither me nor my wife could bear to finish watching it.

I actually ended up hoping Fraser would lose. There was so much hype around him since that clip went viral a while back, that he become the comeback kid crybaby. And in his interviews, he came off as a bit of a smug guy.

I wanted Blanchett to win for Tar. I thought it was a generational performance. I usually only care about Oscar’s when I see a performance I think is special and I thought hers was, wanted her and the movie to get recognition for it. It’s a great movie.

And I absolutely adore Michelle Yeoh. Have been a fan of hers for many years. But I think she only got the award this year because they felt like they owed it to her with all the narratives leading up to the show.

Well many of the scenes and the dialog within them were analogy serving the purpose of the story, however. It wasn't merely an unraveling of the entire plot right at the end.

Like mentioned, many just missed the entire point I suppose.

Started Everything….turned it off after 30 minutes, to quote my wife: “Why are we watching a bunch of sad and miserable old Asians?”.

It’s not a superhero movie, it’s not a fighting movie (there is one in the first 30 minutes), it’s also not a drama movie with ridiculous situations happening all the time.

I cannot believe this beat Tar. What a failure.

But he doesn't say that EEAAO is not American?

He replied to someone that said the movie is a landmark achievement for Asians.

And he replied with a message that basically says: "No other award shows put emphasis on race like this, and it's naive for us to do it." Something like that. I don't see how he claims EEAAO is not American.

Nikunashi, can you clear this up, cause it's driving me nuts.

His exact words:

"I will look forward to a white or black cast movie sweeping the board at the HK film awards or The Golden Rooster Awards.

Or let's see an American movie win best movie at the Bollywood awards."

And you SHOULD know why America has a fixation on, or problem with, race. It's ALWAYS had that... And no... Things didn't SUDDENLY get worse when something happened in 2008.

And why else would he say something about an American movie winning best film at a foreign awards show if he didn't think EEAAO was a foreign movie?

Again, I don't get your angle.

It's not really about EEAAO being American or Foreign. What he's talking about is the idea that it won an Oscar because of the Asian focus. If the movie was mostly white, it wouldn't even get nominated.

He's saying that no other movie award show put race into consideration like Hollywood, so if you go to China, and some Chinese-American made a movie, no one would award that movie a fucking thing. If some American-Indian guy made a movie that was nominated in Bollywood, it would suffer less attention, not more, but in Hollywood, and Indian-American would get a huge advantage because of his race.

That's his angle, as I take it.

Mostly white movies are the DE FACTO and norm! It didn't win because it was Asian focused... It won because it was different, had heart and was original! Or did he forget that a basically all white casted movie (other than the teacher and 2 other minor characters) won for best picture last year (CODA)? Or how about all the other nominees that were largely white?

This narrative that minorities are getting "all the awards" is ludicrous because the numbers don't support it.

Hey, I am not saying it's true or that I believe that, I am just saying I think that's what he was talking about, and that's why I was confused about some of the responses. I think that's the argument he was trying to make.

That’s completely wrong looking at winning stats. White actors dominate the oscars. Eeaao would definitely get nominated. Watched it for the second time today and loved it even more.

Edit. Well that poster is completely wrong.

Sadly all 4 acting awards this year went to the best "narrative" instead of the best performance in the category. Think about it - all 4 winners are actors who have been around for decades and had never been recognized before. It was a first-time nomination for each of them.

And I love Yeoh and JLC as much as anyone, but I guess I'm a traditionalist when it comes to thinking that the best performance should win the award for best performance.

Not that lifetime achievement awards are anything new for the Oscars, but there were a lot more than usual this year.

Good lord the takes people have in here, amazing. I am glad for Yeoh/Fraser wins. I do think Maverick and Avatar should have won more - Maverick's an amazing action movie and Avatar pushed visuals once more, so sad to see them get axed for the most part.

You aren't really describing why the movie didn't do it for you, other than saying meaningless statements like directionless. There is a lot of sub-text and meta going on in EEAAO, agreed, often the scenes are too hectic to follow through, but it really does give out a good impression of how insanely mindbending a multiverse may look like and i feel its pretty amazing they got that sense on film.
Babylon was robbed. ROBBED I tell you.
Oh definitely. That movie is as crazy as EEAAO. It wouldn't surprise if people caught epilepsy from it, however!

There actually is a deeper meaning but like i mentioned prior, the scenes follow up so quickly that it only takes root in the back of your mind. Atleast it did for me. For you, they weren't scenes that contributed to the experience.

What a terrible conclusion to reach after 30 mins. It isn't about that but seeing as you rely on the wife to reach a conclusion, sorry it doesn't work out for you.

What a failure.
Such is only of the consumer who reaches a fore-ending conclusion based on his or her's wife's dismissal.

Wait did some people think that Top Gun actually deserved the top awards???
Wait, you think that Nobody_Important felt like it didn't deserve them? Its a fantastic movie with high levels of authenticity. Say what you will on Tom Cruise but the man puts in the work and has done so for most of his carreer.

In a time where the green screen and computational powers that be are ever more increasing, it is refreshing to see something else.

I'll pass on watching Everything whatever it's called.

I finally watched Shang Chi on the weekend and thought it was pure dogshit. The only good thing was the evil dad was pretty good. Best actor in the whole movie. I'm not a bg superhero movie fan, and I think Avenger movies are cheese, but I have to admit the Marvel Avenger movies I've seen are way better.

I also saw Crazy Rich Asians years back and that's one of the worst movies I've seen in recent times. The only good thing is one of the actresses was hot (not the main one, but that bitchy one who bossed around her BF/hubby).

I also wanted to see how good that live action Mulan movie was to the old cartoon. Bad too. Although I'd say it's better than Shang Chi and Crazy Rich.

Three hyped up movies with Asian casts, and all three were junk unless you enjoy stereotypical kung fu mayhem in two of the movies. Not going to bother with Michelle Yeoh leading Everything Everywhere. Her acting was 100% robotic in Shang Chi.
You sound like such a yokel

This is the dumbest take I've seen in this thread. I missed this post until I saw redneckerz(?) Quote post it. You didn't like Shang-Chi? Cool. Didn't like Crazy Rich Asians? Cool cool cool.

But to say you're going to pass on EEAAO because two other Asian lead films weren't your cup of tea?! Despite all 3 of them being different genres. That's like saying you're not going to watch Prey because two other very different Native American/First Nation movies weren't your cup of tea... That sounds insane, dude.

We have different opinions, no need to show how misogynistic you are (bolded for reference). I didn't like it, neither did she.

Ah yes, the standard answer - it's not bad, it just has "a deeper meaning". All the people not liking it are just too dumb to understand.

Clearly it impacted your decision. Nothing to do with misogyny but nice try.

If you are just going to selectively read which parts of a post you take umbrage with, then perhaps yeah, you might be too dumb to understand.

Or it just wasn't your cup of tea. Different strokes, different blokes, etc..

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying it's a bad movie. It's a good popcorn flick. But the only awards I think it was really in the running for was best sound and best visuals. Funnily enough I thought the cinematography was it's second best feature and I don't think it was even nominated for that. And I don't think the awards it lost were egregious choices.

It didn't deserve Best Picture imo though. But that's just me.

Atleast that's a fair take considering people shun EEAAO for far shallower reasons.
