Tech Support GAF Thread: No Case Too Big, No Case Too Small

My front headphone jack isn't working.

Fresh build & install. Gigabyte AX370 Gaming 5 mobo, CM 590 III case. I've installed the realtek and creative drivers.

I can get audio out by plugging my headphones in the front mic jack and setting to speaker out, but nothing happens if I plug it into the phones jack. I don't even get the pop-up asking which device is connected.

I've tried reconnecting the jack on the mobo and reinstalling drivers, to no avail.

My sister had this problem a while ago, seems like she had a virus that added those sites to the host file, might be worth a shot to look at that.

Thanks, I checked those, no luck - amazon was empty, YT only had a few download and porn mutations of the name...

I ran Malwarebytes and Spybot, they had no alerts.

EDIT: Another strange thing: gaming.youtube.com loads, I can see the thumbnails, but then no video loads.

Is the Date/Time on your Pc correct? If it's not it could cause your Pc to reject the security certificate.

If that's not it, the "porn mutations names" sound very suspect. I'd try running a more in-depth scan.

The date is on auto sync, and apprears to be correct.

The host file in my understanding is a ban-list, so it makes sense that has some pornsites on it. I tried an almost empty default (from MS's support site) and a pre-made one from a site that focuses on host files, no change.

Maybe it is a virus, how did your sister solve the problem? Please dont say format-reinstall :)

So I borrowed a friend's portable hard disk to copy my steam files but when I scanned it the thing seems to have been full of Trojan and malware programs. My laptop auto opens portable storage so is there a chance my laptop is infected as well? Did a full system scan but it's not complete and I'm at work now so I don't know the results yet.
Is formatting it the best option? He said it's ok to do that.

Did the scan make any attempt at isolating and destroying the malware? Yeah, you want to format. Go with a full format, there should be no hidden partitions on a usb disk to hide trojans in.

Bitdefender destroyed most of them but there were two adwares it didn't deal with. Did a format for it.

so microsoft outlook is having major issues with me anymore (stops getting emails after a while, now not sending emails via my yahoo account)

I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for email managers like outlook that will work with yahoo?

I have Chrome installed on my desktop and I log in with my Gmail account. I have it set up to sync all my stuff. When I use my laptop though Chrome isn't updated to reflect changes in my bookmarks or orders. Any reason why this is? I thought they would be sync'd.

A coworker in my realty office has been unable lately to connect to any of our local printers. I seem to have discovered the problem but I've never seen anything like it in my years in IT. She connects to our local office wifi like everyone else around here. Her internet works fine but she can't ping anything locally. So I looked and for whatever reason, when she connects to our wifi, she gets an external IP address, not a 192.168.1.x address. I can disconnect her from the wifi, have Windows forget it, even remove and reinstall the NIC driver, and when she joins this network she still gets that wack IP. I checked in IPv4 and IPv6 properties and she's not setup for a static one, i looked at the hosts file, I've just never seen anything like this. I can't manage the router because it's a business one our company pays for through the isp, but I've called there support and they said they don't see anything on their end. Any ideas?

I won't be able to respond back for awhile if someone answers me, but I wanna post now cause this is driving me crazy.

I have two mysterious wi-fi networks that popped up in my home like two months ago. No new devices in the house aside from Nintendo Switch. They don't have an actual internet connection. And I have managed to figure out they are from Azuretech. But that didn't help me.

Tried looking up their MAC address, no luck. They each have about 4 bars from anywhere in my home. All my devices detect them, and my ipod touch 6 will automatically switch to one of them randomly causing me all sorts of issues.

The names of the networks are...

WM0ff2d9

WM21b4f2

They are 100%, not a neighbor's device.

How the HELL do I figure out wtf these connections are? Forget network doesn't work on any devices, they show up no matter what.

My gpu just died out of nowhere, it's a Sapphire RX 470 Nitro+ 8GB, computer went to black screen without shuting down, after a hard reset the GPU is not being detected, Sapphire logo lights work but the fans don't spin (normally the fans only spin on load, I can't remember if it spins during post or boot), computer boots fine into windows with the onboard graphics and even if the card is inserted in the PCI-e slot.

Here is what I have tried:

Resetting the GPU into the pci-e slot multiple times, no change. Changing the 6+2pin power to the other one, no change. Changing to secondary bios on the GPU, no change. Tried an old HD 6570 and it works, so PCI-E port on the mobo seems fine. Booting with onboard graphics onto windows and checking the device manager shows only the onboard graphics, so is not an HDMI or signal problem, the card is not being detected at all.

There is not visible physical damage on the card, the pins seem clean and only show a little scratching from putting and taking out the card, nothing out of the ordinary.

Any help is appreciated, I just find it very weird, the card was working perfectly, it didn't show any artifacts or had any sudden shutdowns prior to this and now is not even detected.

On top of that my warranty is over with my local retailer and I live in Chile so I doubt Sapphire is going to do anything about it. I'm fucked aren't I?

I guess it's time clear the backlog of old crpg and whatever even runs in this HD 6570.

I was wondering if there are going to be any problems with installing a matx motherboard with dimensions 8.9 x 7.6 inches into a case that had a 9.6 x 9.6. Most of the holes line up in the case but not all of them since it's smaller than the old mobo. I'm not sure if it's okay to leave the holes that don't line up empty.

If anyone can help that'd be awesome because I honestly think this issue has kept me from using my PC more.

IDK if it's a power supply issue, motherboard issue, etc.

So whenever I turn on my PC I have to quickly hit F5 to get to the boot menu so I can select the drive that has windows on it. I have already selected this drive to be my default start up so I don't know why it doesn't start up automatically. If I don't click F5 at startup then my PC falls asleep and never boots.

Additionally whenever I leave my PC idle and it goes into sleep mode, I usually have to reboot the entire PC because it doesn't start back up with the click of the mouse/keyboard. Anyone have any ideas what the issue might be?

I've been having a super weird issue for the past few weeks.

My OS is on an SSD. I also have 3 HDDs for media and files.

At seemingly random times, my computer will start to hitch up and, eventually, force me to restart it. It snowballs pretty quick. I'll be browsing something online and notice my mouse becoming a bit sluggish. And then I'll click a tab and it will take 3+ seconds to switch. Eventually, it just stops responding entirely. I have to manually power down the machine to get it to work again.

Now, my PC runs fine at any other time. Games run buttery smooth, media plays great, browsing and heavy CAD work at aces. So I'm not sure what could be causing this. Any ideas on what it is OR how to better diagnose/track down the problem?

Hello friends.

I am looking for some sort of device that allows me to plug in two separate optical audio inputs that are then sent to a single optical audio output. It seems like I might be the only person in the world who wants this, as every device I've seen seems to do the exact opposite. Any suggestions?

AssassiN

got the wrong hit
Having a strange problem with Google Chrome.

If another user of the computer goes to the chrome settings page (or certain websites such as playing a game on Facebook) on thier windows account, chrome just crashes with no error.

On my Windows account (which i suppose is the main one) everything is fine. I've even created a fresh new user and it still happens.

I've tried reinstalling chrome totally fresh and not logging into a google account but it still happens.

Chrome is at the latest version, Windows 10 is fully up to date. My GF says this only started happening yesterday and nothing has been updated yesterday or the day before so i'm unsure where to start.

Suddenly I have this problem where I'll alt tab between a game and my desktop (Overwatch, WoW) while they're in Windowed Fullscreen and my PC locks up for a few seconds. Any ideas? I did recently update my Nvidia driver, I wonder if it was that.

I think you might need a sound mixer for that.

alright GAF i need help.

this morning out of nowhere my PC turned itself on and since then it will not shut down properly....or at all to be frank.

when i shut down via menu or physical button my monitor goes to sleep, m/kb and power button leds all turn off...but nothing else shuts off.
i can see inside my case and literally all internals are still going.
Case fans gpu and gpu fans. cpu and its fans, internal lighting leds.
All still running as if nothings changed.
Out of curiosity i flipped the master switch and of course everything shut off but upon flipping it back on everything returned to that odd state.

heres the setup

MSI Z170 A PRO MOBO
1070
16gb
i5 6500

ive never updated the bios before and windows is up to date i believe.
power settings are as they should be.
also an LED on my mobo i dont believe ive ever seen lit is now lighting on and off under different actions. its labeled EZ Debug LED

Just finished my first PC build about two weeks ago. How do I know I have the latest drivers for everything? I see people talking about going to manufacturer websites to download drivers -- does that mean the Windows tool that searches for updates doesn't necessarily find all the latest drivers?

Which lights are lit up?

Should be one for CPU, DRAM, and VGA.

It is not always up to date and sometimes installs generic drivers instead of device specific drivers. Go to the manufacturers website for your motherboard, find your model number and get the latest drivers for it and install them (chipset etc). Your video card you can get from Nvidia or AMD website.

Like a switch? It will have multiple inputs but only 1 output but you can only select one device at a time to output. Can't have multiple output at the same time.

My gpus LEDs are lit as well as the LED lighting strips i have and that one LED on my MOBO labeled EZ debug LED.
and all fans are running.
im checking which one lights now

its the CPU light on the EZ debug LED that lights when i put the PC to sleep or "shutdown"
searches online have instances where people had to reseat their cpu...however if my cpu were improperly seated i shouldnt even be able to be here posting this on GAF right?
my issue seems to be the reverse of theirs-they couldnt power on properly whereas I cant power off

If your computer is powering back on instantly after shutting the power off then back on at the power supply, this doesn't seem like a Windows 10 issue but more of a hardware issue. I think the first step of trouble shooting would be trying your PC with a different power supply installed, if possible. Makes sense to begin with the source of the power after all.

I would like to keep the hotspot function always on on my laptop. When im at work, I use a cable connection and need to share the internet with my phone. At home I have wifi so its not needed.

At first I thought it was turning itself off because I use wifi at home, but even when I am at work, if I leave the room for a few minutes (thus, my phone disconnects), when I am back the hotspot is off.

I already turned off the 'let windows turn this adaptor off to save energy' (or something in those lines).

It does make sense.
When I wake up later today I'm going to disconnect everything, clean up my case and rewire everything.
I'll even try updating the BIOS, if after all that If I feel I may need new components I'll begin with a PSU.

So I rewired the cpu connections and PSU and the same issue is happening.
Upon shutdown M/kb and monitor shutdown as well as power LED, but all internals are still bein supplied with power.

I even updated my BIOS and same shit.
Tell me, is this seeming more and more like a PSU issue?
Is this a thing? Power flow remaining constant upon shutdown?
I'm hoping it is as my PSU is relatively cheap to replace and I hope it'll be that simple. (EVGA BRONZE 600B-$45)

Also keep in mind that the Red CPU LED on the EZ DEBUG LEDs lights upon "shutdown"

Anyone having issues with YouTube (site) today?

My sidebar is empty. As in, only the "About - Press - Copyright" etc. is there, but no Home, Watch Later, subscriptions, ANYTHING.

Already restarted Chrome (up to date), cleared cache and data, tried reloading with F5, and searched thoroughly online. Everyone else seems to have a different but similar issue, and all of the posts are old.

Also worth noting that the "new" YouTube theme has the issue, but if I restore the classic design the sidebar is fine.

TechGAF I come before you with a problem.

Graphics card: Radeon R9 200 series (Direct CUII) - I don't remember the precise model number, sorry. It's got 2 x 6pin power connectors though.

I've been getting these white screen graphics crashes where my screen would just go completely white and then freeze up (audio hangs etc) for a few days now, I just dismissed it (they disappeared on a forced reboot), but the latest one apparently took down my graphics card's display output. I've been trying to fix this for about three-four hours tonight and have gotten far in terms of narrowing down on the actual problem, but about zero in terms of fixing the fucking thing.

After a lot of fucking around I managed to get the PC working again by unplugging the card and using the mobo to force it to boot to integrated graphics, checking if that works, then plugging the card back in but using the mobo graphics from BIOS.

Poking around after that, it's apparent that the graphics card is a) recognised and b) working as far as the system can tell, except that it won't actually display anything when I switch everything back around. Fans spin, LEDs light up (so it's drawing sufficient power), but if I head back into the Bios to switch it back to PEG or whatever it just wont' work. It won't output HDMI or DV-I, at least to my knowledge.

I ripped out all installed graphics drivers from the rig and then used radeon utility to clean it out and then reinstall the latest stable drivers, nada.

i'm tearing my hair out here. I was going to get some fucking study done tonight but who knows if that's going to happen even tomorrow... if anybody has any clues please let me know. As far as I know i didn't make any changes in BIOS or otherwise, didn't install anything new, nothing, it just fucking blew itself up.

Things I'll try tomorrow if I get home on time:
reset bios to default
update bios
reseat the video card more?

I'm just glad I haven't lost any data.

By the way the box this is in is tiny, so there's no other PCI-e slots I can jam this sucker into. It's difficult enough unseating it and reseating it as it is.

Card (and the PC as a whole) is about 2-3 years old at this point

So Windows 10 did its self update thing 2 nights ago and now it refuses to output 1440p to my Dell 2715H monitor. It just recognizes it as 2048x1152. I can go to the graphics card settings and create a custom 2560x1440 @ 60 or 50 Hz and it just resizes the display to 1440p output as 2048x1152 which looks horrible.

Everything was working fine up until Tues. night, so I know it should be fine as far as hardware goes. I've updated the NVIDIA drivers and software, no luck. I've reset a few times, removed the display adapters that Windows auto-installs and still no luck.

I'm running windows 10 on a desktop with a GTX-460 miniHDMI-->HDMI to the Dell monitor and DVI to my old Asus 1080p monitor. Any ideas for settings, other things to check? Nothing is more frustrating than an auto update to break something like display settings...

edit - solution:
In case this issues appears for anyone else (or me upon future updates), the solution is to set the timing in the NVDIA Settings of the custom resolution to CVT instead of the default of automatic. Problem solved.

Tough to say. Could even be the mobo. If there is a computer place nearby you might check with them and see if they have a psu tester. They might test it for you, the testers are like 15-20$.

Definitely, I need help.

The issue:
Windows 10. USB ports die after resuming from sleep or hybernation, forcing me to unplug and replug the keyboard and mouse on a different port. A message similar to "USB surge caused by unknown USB device detected, unplug and reset" may appear or not on resume... Even when there's nothing plugged.

Background:
Back in January after being tired of my previous PC randomly freezing, specially when using some USB ports (linux would directly freeze immediately using specific ports), I imagined it would be a motherboard issue and built a new computer. Z270X Aourus gaming 5, i5 6600K, 8gb ram and a GTX1060. The only parts that were recycled from the old rig were the hard drive and a power supply (from 2011?), an Antec earthwatts 750W Act PFC. The usb issues started happening again pretty soon:

What I have tried:
- The main method on internet of removing every USB device and driver from the device manager and reinstalling.
- Removing every USB device that could be power hungry (mainly the bluetooth receiver for the DS4)
- Starting with minimum USB devices plugged,
- Btrnd new keyboard and mouse (that work flawlessly on another computer)
- Reinstalling official USB drivers (and preventing W10 from downloading its own drivers)
- Reinstalling Windows 10 (twice)
- BIOS update
- changing the BIOS config for USB

The issue only happens on resume. There are no issues other wise, and even in OC mode the computer has zero issues draining power. Still I have started to consider that it may be a problem with the Power supply in itself, given the fact that the two different computers I had it on developed trouble with USB (the 5V maybe be acting weird?) Maybe it's time for a new PSU?

Update: It happened again. I had to unplug and plug to a different port in order to log in. No messages at all on the event manager save for installing the mouse and keyboard on new ports. The dead port started working again some time later.

I accidentally bought a 128GB sdxc card. Absolutely nothing takes these behemoths since microsd cards became the norm.
Wtf am I supposed to do with this? Besides eating it, whats a cool use for extra sd cards?
Halp!

Unless you plan on returning it, a DSLR camera would totally love this. Some Motherboards would allow you to emulate an HDD on the sd card and try other OS / experiment with it. You could even use it on a raspberry PI if you have a model that takes standard SD sized cards.

Yeah, I considered raspberry pi but the current ones didnt suport it.
Might look for an old one if its cheap enough.

Were the case or any cables reused? Or any further info in event manager? Might be worth disconnecting any case USB ports from the mobo but I've had issues with PSUs and sleep before so wouldn't be surprised if that is the case

Edit: are the mouse/keyboard always on the same ports when it goes into sleep/hibernation?

Brand New cables, brand new case (Corsair Carbide C400). The keyboard and mouse are usually on either the standard USB or USB 3.0 ports, or in the case ports. I usually leave the USB Dac-Up port reserved for the headphones and I don't touch the 3.1 and C port.

Usually it disables the ports that had stuff connected (M/K and bluetooth receiver), although yesterday despite the usb surge message, I retained usage of the mouse after sleep, although other unused ports were disabled.

I get no messages on event manages, save for the surge or a generic malfunction messages. I will check it again during the weekend.

Update: It happened again. I had to unplug and plug to a different port in order to log in. No messages at all on the event manager save for installing the mouse and keyboard on new ports. The dead port started working again some time later.

I've got a weird problem with my pc. I'm hoping someone might have an idea what's wrong. Apologies for any weird spelling, I'm typing on my phone and it's not easy to spell check.

Here's some background info that might be related. Maybe 3 weeks ago my PC suddenly rebooted itself when I was gaming. It got stuck in a loop of constant rebooting and something smelled burnt. I did some troubleshooting and found that my GPU was dead. I got it RMA'd and after roughly 10 days I got my new card. When I installed my new card everything seemed to work.

After 7 days with the new card I started to get a problem where my monitor lost its signal when I tried to run games in fullscreen. But if I alt+tabbed the signal would come back after a couple of tries. When I ran the games in windowed mode my monitor kept the signal. I read up on the issue and everything pointed to a faulty PSU. I tried the latest doom game to see if that would work in fullscreen (for some reason Everspace worked fine in fullscreen so I wanted to try another game that's fairly new) but that time I couldn't alt+tab back out of the game. I was forced to turn off my pc and since then it refuses to start.

I ordered a new PSU because I thought it was the PSU that had died, but when I installed it and tried to boot up the pc nothing happens.

I've been checking the motherboard when I turn on the PSU and the power button on the mobo flashes for a moment and then goes dark again. This powerbutton is supposed to light up and stay lit when the mobo gets power.

Does anyone have an idea what might be wrong? Any help would be appreciated.

When I run my PC on my KS7000 (UK) I get nice vibrant colours when running stuff at 4k, but as soon as I start to run a game full screen at a lower resolution like1080p it goes dull and washed out, if I run in window mode it stays as it should, only happens in fullscreen.

Anyone had anything like this?

Running an R9 Nano via the displayport to hdmi adaptor @ 4k 60hz

Well it finally happened...Windows hijacked my laptop once again for updates.
Over the past 6 months, it has done updates, failed to install updates, then rolled backed the updates.. This happened every time it demanded the update.

Well Creators update happened, and now shit is breaking left and right. Blue tooth device stops working.. then blue tooth options vanish entirely from computer... Device Manager is impossible to use because it keeps refreshing and glitching out.

Earlier build options give errors.

Was salvaging files and things sort of just flashed and the desktop suddenly had no browser open no files transferring though it was just in the middle of the process..

My plan now is a fresh windows install from USB I guess :/

I've been having this exact same issue recently and I'm not sure what it is. It happens when I'm doing anything, browsing the internet, watching netflix, or playing games, but it's very random.
I also have my OS on an SSD and a HDD for everything else.
Have you been able to diagnose the problem?

So before now, my computer has been able to run games at 60 FPS with the greatest of ease at highest settings, and now games like SFV or KOF XIV and Killer Instinct drop frames hard. Yet games like Tekken 7 and XRD Rev 2 run at 60 at the highest settings with no problems

I don't know what's up.

So one of my old HDD is corrupted. I have two SSDs, and one of them has windows installed on it. If I disconnect my HDD, my PC won't start anymore, it says "reboot and select proper boot drive", but the D isn't the boot drive so what gives? If I go in the Bios I see the boot order is set to my two SSDs.

How do I get rid of my HDD without being stuck on that "select proper boot drive" message?

In disc management it says it is the Primary partition, is that why? Boot stuff is on the C which is the SSD, but that one is also listed as Primary partition, so is my F.

So I updated my "Gaming PC" to the Windows 10 Creators update today (I'm using quotes because it was all of $450 when I put it together 5 years ago and I rarely turn it on anymore) and now Disney Infinity 3.0 Gold has a weird issue. Despite the anemic specs of the computer (AMD 6850, 8 GB RAM, Intel G860), it ran essentially perfectly at 1080p with everything on before the update. Now it's slow and laggy and the picture looks like the contrast has been jacked up. Even the little box telling me how to bring up the Steam Overlay was way too dark. My TV (which the computer is hooked up to) also seems to detect a change in the connection right after I start the game, which I don't remember happening before. This does not happen with other games on the computer and I've tried turning Game Mode on and off to no avail. I tried to take a screenshot of the game to illustrate what I mean, but the screenshot came out looking just fine. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game, but the issue still persists.

In case this issues appears for anyone else (or me upon future updates), the solution is to set the timing in the NVDIA Settings of the custom resolution to CVT instead of the default of automatic. Problem solved.
