It must have ray-tracing in next gen.
Yeah, what this is retains the classic, but RT would have been nice; that and a little bit more character model upgrades (they said they're improved, but they're still chunky and stick out against the nice textures IMO) would have been sweet, as it looks great in motion and the arenas sometimes even hold up (that area with the windmills stuns me how old it was that it looked like that,) but a few more frill effects would have added to it.

Maybe they'll continue improvements? One of the cool things is, even on consoles, they're planning on releasing "free, curated, fan-made and official mods and missions", including Quake 64. So it may continue growing. If they patched in options to use RT, new character models, some other optional visual adjustments, but let you also play the game as close to the original as possible, that'd be a forever release. (As is, this revitalized version looks like how I remember it back in the day yet obviously hugely improved over how it actually was back in the day, so it's a good nostalgia release and will be a rush to play, but some MODs could have juiced it for less of a wayback feel.

Having been a "gamer" since the early 80's I wasn't really a PC gamer after Doom was released. So I played the fuck out of Doom but Quake was after I switched to playing consoles only so I missed this. The only Quake I played was Quake 4 on the 360 (I liked it). Is Quake like Doom, but in 3D? I have ALWAYS wanted to play it so I guess I finally get my chance now!

Eh sort of. Quake 1 differs from classic Doom in three key ways:

- You can jump.
- You can look up and down.
- Enemies have more health but less quantity. A Doom level might have 80 weak enemies while a Quake level will have 35 medium enemies.

Otherwise yes its the same basic principles. Cycle your weapons depending on the situation, enemies are varied & telegraph attacks, search around for buttons & keys.

I noticed the Xbox has a bunch of graphical settings off by default including Ambient Oclusion, AntiAliasing, Texture Smoothing, and others.

Any benefit of leaving those off? or is this just personal preference?

Sounds like my new fav FPS is ready for me to play (I adore John Romero's level design)!

All depends if you either both hate messing with the original quality of the game or if will affect perfomance in some degree.

Doom 64 have those options if I remember right, even one of the Deeps dev behind Doom 64 recommend turn ON AntiAli

I have them turned on and dont notice any performance issues on SX

I can only download the PS4 version on the store. Netherlands here. I’m buying this for Switch and PS. Any idea if there’s cross platform save?

I guess Quake is more complex because Quake lacks the overpowerful weapon like the BFG from Doom. Quad damage make for more 'situation' damage, and the reduce of blast damage increase speedrunners or make some way of strategies inside the game.

As much I love original Doom, their multiplayer sucks. Quake in the other hand is very more balanced.

Looks and runs beautifully on Series X, but I gotta say the gamepad controls feel very OFF.

Already playing? What is 'very off'?

I used to play Quake using GLPRO450 on my notebook, using Dualsense or Dualshock 4. Can you not edit buttons? I remember Doom 3 remaster having the same problem.

Same, I eventually sunk hours into Quake 3 but it just never occurred to me to seek out Quake/Q2 once I switched to PlayStation and N64 since they were unfavorable releases and FPS play wasn't great on joypads back then. (Also, for some reason, I always had it in my head that Quake was slower and more ponderous than Doom, not sure where I got that idea? Maybe the original Quake 64 and Quake 2 commercials ruined it for me?) I remember being more interested in the NIN soundtrack than the actual game, and I just didn't know anybody else either who was into Quake until Q3 multiplayer blew up. (Which is weird, because I remember at the time there was a panic about the future of gaming when Quake was releasing with *gasp* no campaign, just online deathmatching?! Yet Quake 3 was the breakthrough that now kind of defines the franchise, some people probably don't even know that there were campaigns beyond the Quake Arena.)
This release could finally fill that gap for me.

Wasn't there also an enemy count max onscreen in Quake 1? I feel like there was only 3 or 4 enemies in a map area at a time (to save polys; kind of remember previews of Q2 mentioned upping that, and that kind of bummed me out for both games because I knew the limitations.) Like, it's more spongey and HP-depleting combat than Doom's stick-and-move play, maybe? (Although Doom had HP to it as well and that factored into the difficulty, so I don't really know what I'm talking about...)

The new Quake remastered trailer shows plenty of enemies on-screen in hairy situations, so I probably have been wrong all this time...

Runs well on Switch. Mission packs are under New, Game, Quake64 is under Mods.

Now if Arcane Dimensions becomes available as well further down the line...😳

I'm guessing this will reintroduce the franchise before id announce the reboot? Quake 2, it's mission packs, and Quake 3 remasters would also be nice, but if we're getting a new game id rather it was based on this game than Quake 2, despite the fact that Quake 2's soundtrack is incredible.

Epic need to give Unreal the same treatment!

Quake is really special because 3D FPS very quickly took a turn for "realism" (especially after Half-life), so Quake has some fantastic abstract level design that few other shooters have. It's weird because despite being the pioneer for 3D the game remains extremely unique and never truly replicated. You are probably going to love the level design, it's just superb.

I remember that time in gaming very well. Quake looked unique and I loved it's look but just never got to play it. You're description is getting me extremely excited to get home from work to play it!

OK played some on steam and it's a great port !
-4k, 120 fps all works great.
-DISABLE vsync and use nvidia control panel one. It caused a great lag. I am playing with gsync on lg c1 at 120hz(Always have nvcp vsync on and rtss cap to 120) and it felt really bad with in game vsync. Surprisingly, once I disabled it, the game capped to 119fps so I guess nvidia control panel vsync (which I have globally on) does something different
-Thank god an option to enable headbob and disable crosshair.
-Thank god texture smoothing is optional
-And (You can laugh all you want) but the motion blur implementation is crazy good looking. I checked it out quickly and it looks like one of these old motion blur techniques only possible if You ran quake at 900fps and downscaled to 60 with motion blur shader. It looks really nice. And it applies to flying objects. Check it out !
-WTF is "split direction" in options? Anyone?

Didn't the N64 version have the soundtrack done by the brilliant Aubrey Hodges (of Doom PSX/N64 fame)? Is that included here on this package?

Dude check it out. It's super high quality and adds motion to flying grenades and nails. At least on oled at 120hz. And yes - 120hz is still not high enough to totally not use motion blur... When I had 240hz monitor and games running at 240hz.... then I felt there are enough frames to disable "good" motion blur :p
Maybe it looks like shit on lcd, I don't know

Been quite awhile since I played Quake, but I give W a quick tap and I launch myself a meter forward. Was it really like that on the original?

Chuckled at how they've updated the recommended specs section on the original Quake on Steam now to:

  • Windows 10
  • Intel Core i5-6600k @3.5 GHz or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 @3.2 GHz
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 (8GB) or AMD RX Vega 56 (8GB)
  • 8GB System RAM

Used to be Intel Pentium 2 or higher, that's progress for you; I think..

I guess so, but Doom have 2D enemies in comparison with Quake, so kinda explain 'why' there is a limited number of enemies.

Quake try to compensate putting traps around the maps.

I guess the new DLC inside the game overcome those limitations, but the original game have indeed limitations based of the year the game was release.

Not seen any of the show yet, did they mention any of the other games getting the same treatment? The first two are the major games for me but any of them would be a real bonus.
