PC Gamer elects Baldur's Gate 3 as the best PC game ever released

I'll absolutely put rts like aoe2, warcraft 3, starcraft, command and conquer generals, civ series to be there, these games are still very fun to play till this day, bg3 and witcher 3 deserve to be there, however that's not because how good the vanilla content is but how moddable they are, so I would put many bethesda singleplayer open world rpg in there too. Games like league, cs and dota are strong contenders too. As time goes by, I find myself more amazed by games that can still be super fun to play for years or even decades more than how good they are in vanilla state. The tremendous value that these titles offer is just absolutely mind blowing. Perhaps that's due to me having more time to play games than ever.

I wouldn’t even list it. Way too slow and clunky for my taste, everything takes forever and needs extra steps, even just jumping will have you clicking on icons and aim where to land. Spent so many hours on this expecting to finally see why everybody had it on their GOTY list. Eventually just dropped it. Not my thing.

LOL

Not even in my top 50.

When I think about masterpiece PC releases, Half-Life 2 is the only game that pops in my mind. Maybe Unreal Tournament 2004.

I've returned to the first two Baldur's Gate games many times. Don't feel the same way about the third.

I think the ending of Act 2 really ruined that game for me, when that ridiculous self-insert lesbian character comes barging in, bashing her girlfriend's father's head in before announcing they were going away to scissor each other immediately. Suddenly I didn't feel like I was in a fantasy universe anymore.

That is a terrible list.

Disco Elysium at number 2? Yeah, I can see why PC Gamer put it that high.

None of these games deserve to be on the list except for maybe Doom. BG3 is great and one of the best games released in the last 20 years or so but not THAT good.

Disco Elysium is trash.

People may hate it, but Fortnite, Roblox, World of Warcraft, PUBG, CS and so on belong in that list. People actually playing the games tell what the best games are and not some journalists or Metacritic.

Perhaps not to the people mentioning them, but I think "best ever" and "best ever based on today's standards" are two different things.
plenty of the listed games hold up. how are we going to talk about old games not holding up when they put the OG DOOM in top 10? That game is the definition of "doesn't hold up" if we're talking about modern standards. The list is just pure zoomer talk.

Of all time? Hell no. Great game no doubt and deserves the love, but not best game of all time. That belongs to games that truly had an impact on the entire industry.

I personally enjoyed the BG1-BG2-Throne of Bhaal journey more, but that is 2 games plus an expansion. Feels like one absurdly good game though.

It's hard to argue with Baldur's Gate 3 being the best PC game. It's so well designed and the options for the approach to situations feel endless, as does the reactiveness of the world itself. I've only played around 75 hours but it doesn't feel like I've played that long.

I've definitely got problems with how jarring the introduction to Act 3 is and how hugely overwhelming it is at first, but once I just put myself on a path it became a bit more manageable. Those are personal issues though and I'm sure others loved that.

When you bring other players into the mix, there's nothing like it. Definitely an incredible game that everyone should at least try.

Baldur's Gate 3 is a great game, but I think having it in early access for so long was a double-edged sword. Sure the first act is superb, but you can clearly tell where the community feedback and paying attention to tiny details have stopped. The best game of all time should remain on the same level from start to finish.

I am fine with BG3, W3, HL2, Eldenring, Minecraft. But yeah...discussions about Top10 games are pretty useless. Everybody has his own Top10.

Good God, that is an embarrassing list, perfectly emblematic of the clown show that PC Gamer has turned into.

Judging by the games merits I think it's hard for me to argue it not being at the top spot. Sure it has some problems, but looking at the product as a whole it is excellent.

At first I thought it wasn't worthy due to some of the issues I have with the game, but looking back at my play through I was pretty shocked at how personal the story is through the choices I made. Whilst that might appear to be smoke and mirrors and really it may just be the illusion of choice in a lot of cases, it hasn't felt that way when I've played it, which not many games has done to me before.

I agree that the top spot should be reserved for games that truly impact the industry and this definitely will. Developers were even coming out and saying that players can't expect all RPGs in future to be of this scope (or something along those lines). This is a good indicator that a game has had a huge impact and also my answer to that is 'why not?'. I'll certainly be using BG3 as the benchmark for CRPGs from here on out.

I don't care how anyone spins it, this is an incredible achievement, despite some of its flaws.

I always try very hard to differentiate games that I personally like vs games that ste objectively very good.

Baldur’s Gate funnily enough is one of those. I don’t play it, because I simply do not enjoy turn based combat. After a few hours I’m bored of that system and never touch it again.
Yet I have no doubt the game is a really good one. Not being for me doesn’t make a game bad.

That is what I tend to think when I see lists of greatest games and so on.

This also works the other way around: I had a good time with plenty of games such as AC, CoD4 and Aladdin (snes) to name a few of many. However I would never say these are among the greatest games of ALL time. Objectively speaking they just aren’t.

Its the same for me with soulslike Games like Eldenring. Never played it, never will play it...but I accept that this is one of the best game for people who like this kind of game.

Cyberpunk that low is a joke. 72, it's a quintessential PC experience. But apparently not a better PC game than Strange Horticulture. PC Gamer was cool once, but is now mostly an affiliate site which tends to fill it's front page with SEO optimized articles like "Best gaming mouse deal on Prime day". They hardly even bother with game reviews.

That Top100 doesn't have WarCraft 3 which was as influential as Half Life... like jfc WC3's Editor spawned DotA and Tower Defense games.

No UT2004. No Duke 3D. No Quake. No AOE2. No C&C.

Like some of the biggest milestones are missing in this list.. it's like whoever made it has never played PC games. lmao

Deus Ex, VTMB, KOTOR, Elden Ring, Morrowind.
I'm still waiting for the perfect game. Elden Ring's perfect combat + Morrowind's sense of grandness/openness + Amazing characters/dialogue/story of Deus EX/VTMB/KOTOR/Witcher 3.

Boss: Alright guys! We're making a Top 100 List, but people only really care about the Top 10. So how are we gonna do this?

Yes Man #1: Let's put a bunch of games released in the last 10 years that got high critical scores. Kids these days have the attention span of flies.

Yes Man #2: Oh but let's toss a couple in from 20+ years back for the boomers who will call us out unless they see Doom or Half-Life 2!

Chad: Why don't we actually try to be a semi-respectable publication?

You feel that if Heroes of Might and Magic 3 was released today as a retro style indie title it would have made this list.

I just genuinely feel that a lot of journalists these days likely not have experienced PC gaming in the 90's, or at least pre-steam gaming, and so maybe these lists should be confined to era's the journalists have actually experienced.

Played this for about 30 hours recently. It’s def a cool game and I can see why people like it but I find the inventory management to be really tedious and I lost steam before the end of act 1.

Switched to Metaphor and just find the whole game more enjoyable. Guess I’m JRPG to the core.

It isnt nostalgia.

I played BG2 a couple of years ago for first time on my retro games run. Played a whole bunch of crpgs for first time.

There isn’t anything like BG2.
I mean it is partially nostalgia. Certain things BG3 does simply better like reactivity.

But for other things I like BG2 better and doubly so for magic possibilities. Which is like I am a big fan of Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous.
