NPD Sales Results for October 2015 [Up1: Xbox #1]

Microsoft Store, Dell, Target, and Walmart I think all had value-added stuffage. Might be missing a few retailers.

I forget if Gamestop had sommit added.

No I just meant the guy seems commenting from the perspective of social media from a specific retailer. When you say you work in social media it's easy to assume you work with market wide trends so I was just trying to make sure I had the appropriate frame of reference for his insight.

I am, which is why I said it's the better deal here. Granted I only see FB and Twitter posts but they are largely in favor of XB1 purchases.

Don't think its worth anything but I'm seeing way more posts for people buying XB1 tonight at work than PS4. Granted the XB1 is the better deal here but I find it interesting.

More people are actually talking about the Wii U or how they weren't able to get one than PS4.

No, I work in social media. I see everything.


So parents and others are going to social media to share the gifts they purchased? I don't think social media is a great way to gauge sales considering a majority of sales are going to be gifts .

Parents, wives, husband, boyfriends, girlfriends aren't going to go to Facebook or Twitter and talk about what they purchased....


But as you said, it's probably not worth anything.... ;)

Of course not, but it's not a data source you dismiss when analysing purchase trends.

For example, let's assume PS4 outsells Xbox despite higher social media buzz on XB1 purchases over PS4.

We can make some guesses that Xbox is more popular among social media sharers than PS4, but the silent buyers are a majority.

The context being

Like i predicted last month as well, i think the xbox will again edge out the ps4. I'd actually be quite surprised if Xbox didn't win.
 
They already did the social media thing with the Target app and that article a few months back talking about internet presence or whatever. I don't think it really means much.

Don't know of how indicative of overall sales across retailers but so far PS4 has been the best seller at amazon.Com which is surprising considering it's the Nathan drake bundle and not the star wars one

I mean, we can easily surmise that the WiiU social media buzz on Twitter will mean absolutely nothing in absolute sales.

Nintendo sales buzz on social media are either a loud minority or an audience who are interested in Nintendo and tweets about it, but have zero intention of buying one.

And the TR thing is just what I was told. If you paid attention the marketing message definitely softened after SE went ahead and announced the Pc/PS4 dates so it lines up in that circumstance.

In what universe where Microsoft pays money for a timed exclusive, does both Microsoft and SE intentionally sabotage the game they've partnered on? Why would Microsoft pay a ton of money and SE remove other platforms from the pot, leaving the Xbox versions as the main source of revenue for a year, and then both purposely not advertise said game due to sour grapes. It makes zero sense.

Sales actually slower than last year, (or so it seems)but I'll will know more tomorrow. MS was selling slightly better by the time I left earlier. Still selling a lot of Fallout 4 1TB bundles at full price too, which offset cost.

In contrast, people were buying the Uncharted PS4 bundles and a copy of Battlefront and/or BO3 for $358 or $348.

Resellers cleared the shelves of a lot of titles (again) that were priced at $27 and $35 in flyer.

I bad to play some Tales of Zestiria before bed, lol, but I have to be back in 5 hours. Bad, bad bad and my own fault, lol.


What were shipments like for both. Do you have equal amounts of ps4s and X1s?

More XB1's again this year.
 
If it has a handheld form factor, Japan will support it in mass since that's where the domestic gaming market for Japan is other than mobile. The whole reason for NX seemingly having both a handheld and a console form factor from rumors is so that that their console gets the same third-party support that the handheld gets. The difference here is if NX will be in its own little world or if games on the NX can be crossported with the PS4 and vice-versa.
Is this even possible? Would be an earthquake move.
Or even: Sony taking only the console part (as their handheld is not selling) and Nintendo concentrates on handheld (for inverse reasons).

Yup. I stated this months ago. That this year I'm sure MS was going to focus on profits and their margins. It was clear last year was about install base. Had they not made those moves last year they'd be losing terribly.

This year is all about profits for them though.
They try to keep the cake and eat it. What is revenue per unit good for if you don't sell them?
Also, with all this gift card stuff and so on going for profit is a myth. Spencer made a PR statement and we believe it. Maybe for the Halo bundle (where it did not work), but for the rest it's the same as always.

Do companies want to sell massive amount of console at bargain price or a little less with reasonable profit margin?
Black Friday is not the time of year for this question I guess.

Whoever wins November, it'll be a small lead. Not expecting anywhere close to the 400k gap from last year.
I disagree. Okay, 400k is probably too much, but the lead will be huge. I think Black Friday itself will be a tie, but preorders for Star Wars and COD will be huge and give the extra push.

Anyway, the guessing game will be the craziest of the year.

That's nice and all but still pales in comparison to what MS did with Assassin's Creed. The ROTR bundle was poorly handled (one specific retailer) and they barely advertised it. From what I gather from Kagari's posts in another thread, Square-Enix expected a Titanfall-level hype machine but Microsoft promised a mountain and delivered a pebble.

Lot of Microsoft's decisions never made sense this gen if you go in with the mindset that they have a plan. Making a trailer for the Phantom Dust reboot without knowledge or involvement from the developers, etc etc.

It makes a lot more sense when you approach them from the angle that they were reactionary moves made while panicking.

I'm heading into GameStop to work open to 1. I'll report back tonight what I saw. I wont be able to track specific #s like usual but I'll try my best to see what's selling the best.

Last year neither PS4 or XB1 saw a price increase after Black Friday. When MS tried to raise the price in January it failed horribly. It will be interesting to see how consumers react to a price increase in December. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony extends the price promotion of the uncharted bundle.

Xbox One was on sale for two months last year compared to 4 days for the Uncharted bundle. Not really comparable.

Ya I don't get the compare myself either. Both XB1 and PS4 will sell huge in December no matter what. Every bundle, etc will sell. Desperate parents who don't have money till mid December will buy what they can. I did retail for way too long to know this lol

There are definitely social networks talking more about Wii u than PS4. For example, Miiverse.

While I think it's interesting to read about social media data (like the Nintendo won E3 because of Luigi Death Stare) and anticipation levels like those from Nielsen, I think point of sale data is still king.

Which is why I think limited retail data is more valuable still. Good ole retail musings or Amazon chart placements in situations where there aren't millions of bundles (so right now it's not good.)

I guess Amazon was reliable for October... people just forget Halo 5 Bundle preorder in August and September.

But we also got info from NPD George that the Halo 5 bundle only sold ~93K in October, that doesn't sound like months of pre order helped it much. In fact, it actually lines up with the monthly charts for October with the Uncharted bundle being ahead. However, the XB1 still won October. So I'm gonna wait until we get the numbers for November then compare it to the November charts to see if Amazon is still fairly reliable.

So nevermind Javin, you can use Amazon this month without hesitation.

LOL, you know for a fact that ain't true. :p Anyway, I know what I posted may sound ridiculous and all, but Amazon was pretty reliable for most of the months, so I'll see how November goes.

Yeah, I know you were kidding. I was just speaking my mind, something I didn't let out since this thread went live. Also, I typically don't really try to use it to determine the gap, but last month just felt like Amazon was flat out wrong.

e3 2014. i think it was a combo of the luigi meme, mario kart 8's release in general, and their treehouse live show being received in general. it started some positive word of mouth that continued through the end of 2014. i think whatever increased interest was there started to fade away in february or march earlier this year.

Without preorder it could be 60k... below PS4.

That's not how is work.

He's just saying that if it generated 30k preorders over two months--not a lot-- it was enough to tip the scales. The systems were close enough on Amazon that this could have been what happened.

Haters defeated. Amazon lives another month. Back to Luigi death stare with the lot of you.

30k preorder in August and September is pretty reliable.

Lol, how is my post being hostile? lol I think some of you try to just create drama, it was a very calm statement, I even requoted him where he said it "probably doesn't mean anything" with a wink and smiley!



Despite the context, I still dont see social media buzz being a legitimate gauge for sales or hype, not this month at least. Like I said before, a majority of these sales will be gifts and people aren't going to share their gifts online. That is just my opinion, even after Nightingales context.


Any other month, I would give that information much much more weight. Right now, it is simply passionate gaming fans who probably purchased for themselves. And from browsing twitter, I personally cannot see any real advantage towards either console. However, I dont work in social media and may not have the same channels for looking at what people say they are buying.
