Nintendo Fan spent 40,000$ on Nintendo Stock so he could ask executives why the company won't make more of a fan-favorite series

A gamer said he spent over 5.6 million Japanese yen, or over $40,000 if translated to US dollars, on Nintendo stock, and used his opportunity to ask a question during the Japanese gaming giant's annual shareholder meeting Wednesday about a fan-favorite series he wants to see revived.

The fan asked Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa if it has considered relaunching some fan-favorite game franchises, specifically "F-Zero," which was a racing-game series that hasn't had a new entry released since 2004. The fan, who is based in Japan and used an online translator to communicate, told Insider over Twitter direct messages that he bought 100 shares at 56,430 yen per share (or over $400 per share in today's dollars) in February after selling his stock in another company. He wished to remain anonymous for privacy, but his Twitter handle translates to Momiji. He told Insider that he is a "diehard Nintendo fan."

He was granted the opportunity to attend the shareholder meeting after buying one unit of stock (100 shares), but said it wasn't guaranteed that he would be able to ask a question. That was just a "bonus."

"I have been playing Nintendo games since I was a child," Momiji told Insider. "Among them, I can't get enough of that sense of speed of 'F-Zero.'" Executives said it's realistically difficult to develop new titles and remakes, including sequels, for every Nintendo game that people request"

totally worth it matthew perry GIF

Heck they could port GX to Switch with nothing but 1080p docked enabled and online multiplayer to "test the market" and I'd buy it for 60 bucks.

But what did they reply!?

I think those games simply don't produce the same level of ROI as others like Zelda or Mario. So why spend 100 mil on Fzero to make 20% when you can spend the same making another Mario spinoff and make 30%...

The F-Zero on SNES was the big one with 2-3 million sold, every other F-Zero sold a lot less. A mediocre Mario game sells more than the entire F-Zero franchise in 2 weeks.
True, but that was the case for Kirby as well once upon a time, and Fire Emblem. Switch definitely had a large chance to change things for the series; especially after a Mario Kart appearance.

That's because they don't have cutie waifus in the games like in Mario for advertsiment.

My. God. 40000 you just put out a feeler on reddit for someone willing to make you a game privately using NINTENDO IP, because if you've got 40000 to ask a question, you've got 400K to make a little private indie game. . .maybe. . .or a hooker. Both would distract from you not getting the game you want from "The House That Luigi Built."

Well, games like Fire Emblem and Kirby serve important functions, they flesh out the genres that Nintendo feel they need to cover, and they both have very important legacies within Nintendo. Kirby has been a great handheld title for 30 years, they have pushed out a lot of small Kirby games that were probably very cheap to produce, and most sold well over a million. It's a game that goes from the youngest market that Nintendo is aiming at, younger than Mario. It's their easiest entry point. Fire Emblem was the first big tactical role-playing game and fulfills a genre that Nintendo lacks presence in. I think it's an important franchise for Nintendo, even though it never was a big seller until Three Houses.

Nintendo wants to offer more than just platformers, so they are fine with a few lower-selling franchises. The problem, I think, with F-Zero, is that it absolutely bombed in the handheld market, and the trend for the N64 and Gamecube versions was bad. They have Mario Kart covering the racing genre, and a sci-fi racer that sells around 1 million, even with fantastic reviews, just doesn't serve a purpose.

That said, Switch's gigantic success does create new opportunities, and considering how many classic Nintendo franchises that now live on the system, we might, maybe, get lucky.

Investing in a company that prints money hardly seems like a stupid use of money.

lol yeah, Nintendo stock is good, so no harm in buying it for the lulz. Just need to make sure to sell well before next gen is announced, since that's the moment the stock will sharply move up or down.

Well the last console F-Zero was in the clearance bins at retailers.

It’s possible they could sell a million or so copies with a new game, but it’s chump change compared to just doing more Mario Kart.

I'm actually surprised the Mother fans haven't tried this yet. But I think you need way more than 40k to sway Nintendo's interest as a stockholder.

I myself would love to buy millions worth of Nintendo stock and then go into a shareholder's meeting playing bootlegged Satellaview ROMs on an emulator, just to see the reaction.

So he bought one hundred shares and also got to ask a question?
That’s not what the title leads you to believe.

But I mean he will more than likely get a return on that money either way.
