New Monster Hunter Announced called: Outlanders (mobile game)

If it's for cosmetic only, makes zero difference.
That's not going to be the case this time. From Gametsu's interview:

Switchable Characters
As you progress through the story, you will encounter various unique characters. Not only can they become your allies, but you will also be able to control them yourself.

The characters showcased,

are overwhelmingly likely to be Banner characters, like in Genshin Impact or Zenless Zone Zero.

Then you'll likely have ways to upgrade their specific kit. Monster Hunter translates beautifully to this style of monetization. They can sell different attractive characters with different monster armors, different elements, and you power them all up along their tree. This is remarkably similar to how monster hunter's equipment system operates traditionally; except instead of gambling with the desire sensor to get the stuff you want, you're doing it with real money.

It's saying you can control them progressing through the story. Where is the monetization there?

I am genuinely mad that this mobile spinoff is going to have the best Kulu-Ya-Ku weapons in any MH game...

That said, I'll definitely try it out. I still casually play MH Now (the Pokemon Go spinoff) and it controls surprisingly well on touchscreen. I'd like a more fleshed out experience, so maybe this won't be so bad.
I said the same thing immediately when seeing this in the video. This design is...VERY well done.

Genshin abused my soul for 2.5 years....time for dailies, who's wit' me?!?!?

Ya it’s likely going to be banners for characters , and then *maybe* we’ll be able to equip them in armors that we earn by hunting monsters.

But if armors and weapons are part of the gacha, it’s going to be a tough sell imo.
They would be taking the core aspects of MH and gachafying it.
And don’t get me wrong, I play tons of F2P games, inherently there’s nothing wrong with f2p or gacha from my point of view, but those systems have a high likelihood of clashing with the core systems of MH, that’s going to fundamentally change the flow and loop of the game.
Only time will tell.

It doesn't say you control them progressing through the story. It says you encounter them as you go through the story. "Not only CAN they become your allies, you will be able to control them yourself." These are two separate sentences, implying a distinction. At least that's how I interpret it.

Furthermore, you can also play as various banner characters in the story segments in games like Zenless Zone Zero. Then those characters are locked up again. You play a quest or two as that character to get a feel for them, and once you're hooked, you waddle over to the store and you can roll for them. This is nothing new in the mobile sector. You give players a taste, and then you get them craving more.

This is why all predatory monetized games start you off with tons of energy or materials and fast level ups and oh wow here's a four star <thing>. Jeez you've only been playing for a half an hour but you're already level 5! Ah well... looks like you're out of energy now. See ya tomorrow! Well unless you want to keep playing... Tell ya what, just for you, I'll give you an introductory deal. For 99 cents I'll top up your energy three more times. Then you can keep playing and keep having fun!

There's a term that escapes me right now referring to the psychological barrier of the first dollar spent, and once a player crosses that threshold, it's much easier to get them to continue spending.

I'd be willing to bet that when this game launches, you can create a character and play as normal, but you're locked to whatever weapon type you started with. You can unlock more weapon types as you progress through the quests, but kitting out your character will be a long, arduous process. Looking back at MH Frontier, you would need to hundreds of materials to create a single piece of end game gear. Of course you could always pay real money and skip huge chunks of that. I mean, what's more important, spending $5 or 40 hours crafting this thing? And then the banner characters, on top of being cool, already have their own unique armors and weapons with skills and set bonuses that you DON'T have to grind for yourself!

Are we really discussing here whether Tensen will monetize the game? Let's say that players will be lucky if they don't monetize the air in the game, and in the literal sense. Well, as an example, they will leave ordinary low-ranking monsters, and if you want to go to something bigger, let's say Diablos, you will have 3 attempts per day (This is if they are in a good mood, you will be lucky if not per week), if you want more, pay. And yes, most likely it will be a clone of Genshin with characters and Gacha banners, everything is heading in this direction.

You can expect absolutely anything from this company =)

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Looks really good for mobile but if they don't have capcom engine/code underneath somewhere the fighting probably won't feel quite as good. Especially if they make the progression different with the usual 5 different currencies or whatever gacha crap to milk whales with.

Kinda seems like it might be even more actual open world focused than Capcom's latest effort though, lol. We'll see. Maybe it could become a modern Frontier alternative if it's not ruined by the above. And yeah if it runs like that on some flagship phone imagine on budget.

Either way it's nothing to whine about, we're getting a proper new game after all and probably down the line some Switch 2 game to follow up on Sunbreak, unless that system can run Wilds acceptably (or maybe to maximise sales a new game instead of a late port anyway).

I was just in Japan and you guys wouldn't believe the amount of people playing big-budget phone games anywhere they have a free moment. This will probably be enormous.
