PS3 is fully available, but the Vita version seems it's not meeting demand. GamesMaya also noted strong sales, just for the Vita version.
Tsutaya's ranking also showed PSV > PS3

I guess people prefer to play this game in a portable device?

Portables tend to be much more popular among school kids, especially if they're multiplayer games. With Gundam Build Fighters Try airing now, it would not surprising that there's more demand for the game among younger demographics on portables than older gamers who game on consoles more.

Where's my Build Fighters RPG, Bamco?

Lol, 6 out of 20 games of the Top 20 best selling games in 2014 are PS3 titles, and the only other home console game there is MK8 which outsold them. This console is still strong there o_O.

Level 5 must be happy too with 4 Yo-kai Watch titles in the top 10.

Mixing the 2014 data from one source and the other years from the other source I did this (not sure if it's correct):

10869838_840961519300660_1678293430684864584_o.png

In the following one we must also consider that during the first years there were PS2, GBA, etc still selling there:

Edit: I'll change the 2014 values, because just noticed that as of now they are MC but all the others are from Famitsu.

amazon has old 3DS models with a 24% discount for some time now, when the usual discount for hw is 5%. That could explain sudden increase of demand for them last weeks if situation is similar at other retailers.

Predict how much these titles will sell in the month (from Dec 29/2014 to Jan 25/2015):

[3DS] Yokai Watch 2 Shinuchi (28 days) - 475k
[3DS] Kenka Bancho 6 (11 days) - 50k
[PS3] Tales of Zestiria (4 days) - 350k
[3DS] Legend of Legacy (4 days) - 65k
[WIU] Kirby and the Rainbow Curse (4 days) - 20k
[ALL] Far Cry 4 (4 days) - 45k

Is the DQH bundle still in stock?

Tsutaya Shibuya has the big table with screen usually hiska take pictures filled of DQH bundles and the rolling demo on screen.

There were also the lucky bag (Fukubukuro), a tradition in Japan for New Year, they are selling a combo of 3 games in which one is showed and the others are the surprise (I presume there are games which they are not selling and they want to give away)

Yesterday I went to Book-Off and they gave me the usual flyier with prices if you sell them games, there was Samurai Chronicles 3 for PSV at 4,000yen and in Tsutaya the lucky bag with SC3 for Vita is priced 4,980yen...
for 2 games at 980yen I could try the deal :D

[3DS] Yokai Watch 2 Shinuchi (28 days) - 450k
[3DS] Kenka Bancho 6 (11 days) - 40k
[PS3] Tales of Zestiria (4 days) - 265k
[3DS] Legend of Legacy (4 days) - 35k
[WIU] Kirby and the Rainbow Curse (4 days) - 55k
[ALL] Far Cry 4 (4 days) - 30k

I remember reading that GB2 actually supported Cross-Buy (!) in Japan. Is that true?

Not really Cross-Buy, but IIRC they offer a PS3 (retail) +PS Vita (digital) bundle. Really great game, so I hope it sale well enough so NB will release more sequel later in the future.

that confirms again famitsu's error

we should be expecting bigger famitsu numbers next week

Maybe Nintendo has some ports or something because there are going to be months of nothing for Wii U if not. Even the games they do have lined up aren't particularly big. Mario Party 10 might be the biggest Japanese game this year if Zelda is delayed.

Wind Waker HD only took 6 months, they should have more HD ports to fill out the lineup which would certainly pull in some money

I think a Galaxy collection is the only one they even hinted at since I think it was Miyamoto who brought it up and said they'd want to outsource it (likely to Hexadrive who helped with WWHD). Also two games would explain the long wait for more ports.

I saw old 3DS models for less than 10.000 yen in Akihabara.

That bundle is still in stock everywhere I've checked out in my local area. They must've shipped out quite a lot of them.

I'm starting to wonder if they will sell all these Dragon Quest Heroes bundles. They shipped maybe, too much??

10 000 Yen for the old 3DS? Well, no wonder we had it outsell the N3DS a couple of weeks last month. I'm surprised Nintendo still hasn't discontinued it, but maybe that's just Japan's equivalent for the 2DS: cheap, affordable model.

Meanwhile, official Nintendo website indicated that only White and Pink 3DS XL models are still being shipped to retailers, as all the others have been completely discontinued (there's probably some stores with some units left, though)

Well, IMO it was pretty good with titles like Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2, Fatal Frame V, Super Smash Bros. in addition to smaller ones. There were a number of titles released each month.

To set that up they basically had to take output that could have went in other months and put it all in the same timeframe.

Nintendo has limited resources with which they can release games, and that they also have another platform or two to support strains that even more.

The only upcoming first party 3DS games at this point are Xenoblade and Code Name: S.T.E.A.M., no? I think the Wii U's Fall line-up took a huge bite out of just about everything.

There's also Majora's Mask 3D, and I'm sure there's one more release before May (no idea what, but I doubt they wouldn't have anything for GW).

They have to be planning a white New 3DS LL. My guess is it will release some time between March and May.

And it's important to note that titles like Bayonetta 2 and Fatal Frame aren't even mid sized titles.

From a sales perspective, only Smash and now with the holidays Captain Toad have done well, and even Captain Toad is a small game. That means only 2 large games were launched on Wii U this year (Mario Kart and Smash), and no mid sized titles.

Nintendo should have their usual Direct and investor info dump this month, so it should be really interesting to see what Nintendo has planned for this year because it seems like it's going to be a quiet year while they prepare the new handheld launch presumably for next year.

If we're talking about sales volume that's true, but Bayonetta 2 I suspect had one of the larger budgets ever given to a Wii U exclusive.

That said, everyone on it was external staff.

Yeah, I don't doubt one second they're going to release a new colour in the upcoming months, but I was specifically referring to software for GW.

Last year had that special edition of Wagamama Fashion and Mario Golf.

My guess is MM3D is a (late) March... but what about April? Guess we'll know in the upcoming days.

I think the Wii U's Fall line-up took a huge bite out of just about everything.

You mean "they used all their ressources and have nothing left for the rest?"

I really don't think so, as the Fall line-up is exclusively made up of stuff made by 3rdparties:

Hyrule Warriors: KT
Bayonetta 2: PG
Fatal Frame 5: KT
Smash Bros: Bamco
Captain Toad: 1st-party, but probably really small team. Same with MK8 DLC.

If you look at the 3DS, you got Pokémon... which is made by Game Freak (and Smash by Bamco too).

Unless I misunderstood your post?

But looking at all this makes you wonder what the Nintendo teams are doing right now. Hell, even their announced 3DS stuff is not internal (Steam is IS and MM3D is Grezzo).

There are no known Mario games planned for 3DS so a new one might be coming just for the Golden Week. Last year, Mario Golf tanked, but there was Mario Party selling ok-ish.

I kind of consider third parties they can partner with to be resources too though.

Like, between second/third parties they can contract and their internal development teams, they can release X amount of content.

If their games average a 2-3 year development cycle, then they have to figure out how to spread that out over those 2-3 years most effectively.

The more you release at once, the less you can release later unless you hire a lot more staff or sign a lot more partners.

Are there any Mario Sports games that haven't gotten a release this gen on this note? Soccer maybe? I don't think there's been a basketball game recently, but I'm not sure if Square is lining up to release a new one of those.

No Strikers, Baseball, or Hoops games yet on either. Hell none whatsoever on Wii U for that matter.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

That doesnt mean much when it comes to handheld, from all we no Nintendo is a Direct away from announcing their 2015 lineup. It probably has more to do with the fact that they want to drop the announcements worldwide at the same time when projects are tied to the n3DS.

Holiday season just ended so announcements cant be too far off.

And it's important to note that titles like Bayonetta 2 and Fatal Frame aren't even mid sized titles.

I'm guessing you're thinking Bayonetta 2 is not even mid sized because it sold averagely to poorly, not because of the budget (which was likely quite high) or franchise's history (300k+ for the last game, of which 110k was on 360).

Wouldn't that make Captain Toad a mid-sized game too, because it sold like one?

Seems a strange metric. Means we can never judge any game's size before it releases.

PS3 is fully available, but the Vita version seems it's not meeting demand. GamesMaya also noted strong sales, just for the Vita version.
Tsutaya's ranking also showed PSV > PS3

I guess people prefer to play this game in a portable device?

I guess it might've been difficult to judge demand for the Vita version, given that the last version sold with the bundle attached.

Well, we should find out pretty quickly then either by announcements or omission.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Cant see them announcing the n3DS for western markets without a couple games announcements, including a bigger Amiibo/NFC title.

True there are multiple ways to define that. I guess I should have said that title did not sell in the mid market range.

Oh, I know 3rd-parties are ressources, but my point was that Nintendo teams haven't released anything for last Fall* (except Toad and MK8 DLC). Obviously those teams have been working on something, which is why I believe Nintendo got several games getting ready (and at least one of them will release before GW).

Should also have made it clearer I was talking about 3DS specifically, my bad.

And a couple of days ago, I mentionned those franchises that have yet to appear on 3DS: I'm sure Nintendo's planning to release some of them this year, probably even during H1. And some of them are the kind of games that could get a short announcement > release window (like Rhythm Heaven for example).

*Actually, did we get even one retail game in 2014 that was developped internally (other than MK8, and DKCTF -because game was probably already done when it came out, and I'm talking of NCL specifically)? Even on 3DS, most of the stuff was "outsourced" (Kirby, Yoshi, Mario Golf).

Also, I wonder what Camelot is doing at the moment. Mario Golf came out last year, but this one got a huge delay and I doubt they needed that much more time to complete the game.

But yeah, it's the start of a New Year, last Direct was a while ago... I think we should get a clearer picture of Nintendo plans before the end of the month.
