DS sales didn't pick up until Mario Kart, Animal Crossing and Brain Training came out. The surge started with them, and the DS lite launch in the subsequent March took them up further. I really don't think price is the factor here. Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 should get things moving, but do they have anything like Touch Generations, and do they have a hardware revision? Because without them, it won't come close to DS numbers.cvxfreak said:The 3DS being at 15K means that it'll be slightly cheaper than the DS was from mid-2006 until fall 2010 or so.

25,000 yen was a cocky launch price. But they were coming off the back of a massive success. They had seen that, even though they increased the price of each DS revision, it didn't hold back sales. Surely they misjudged that as an indication they could price the 3DS so high.cvxfreak said:I see what you're saying, but I don't think DS would have sold 30 million+ at ¥25,000, either.

But the PSP wont get steamrolled by the 3DS even with this pricedrop. 3DS will probably sell more hardware compared to the PSP for some time, but i cant imagine that it will be steamrolling.
Yep, the PSP does indeed have some good content that will be enough to keep the PSP hardware sale goodSpiegel said:Agreed, psp has a lot of decent sellers lined up in the coming months that should make the hardware sales consistent.
On the other hand this is an unprecedented move and it is going to be very intersting (and pretty funny all things considered) to see a 5 months old, more powerful hardware selling cheaper than a 7 years old handheld. And we don't know how high the 3DS hardware sales will jump.
In my opinion, the timing for this price drop is not the best. I would have waited until the release of a bigger seller (Mario in November) or two/three weeks earlier because the 3DS lineup is pretty barren until then and I don't know if the price cut alone can sustain the sales outside of the few first weeks. But this is a massive price drop and could be what the consumers needed.

Wasn't Nintendogs the driving force behind the DS success? I remember the DS selling out everywhere at christmas 2005, and used Nintendogs being sold at incredible prices on Ebay. Mario Kart was already out, but all the kids wanted a DS for Nintendogs. Maybe things were different in Japan, though.

I wonder when they gave that update. Maybe it's from last week's Famitsu weekly when DX came out, when BKK posts the numbers we'll see.Road said:According to GDM:

cvxfreak said:How the hell did No More Heroes: Red Zone Edition sell that many copies?
Yeah. It still is the best debut ever for the series, but now it's a much more realistic number, considering the sales history.Rush2thestart said:Seriously. Theres also a big difference between media create and dengeki.
Revisionism! Oh well, guess its for the best (it was a pretty blatant case). Hopefully we get an overall look at the series as well (if its really from Famitsu magazine).Road said:According to GDM:

If it had Mario Kart it would hit 200k but with a low profile Pokemon spinoff as the "leading" title I doubt it will go to 6 digits unless the price drop has a bigger than expected effect.allan-bh said:I'm curious to see 3DS sales in the price drop week.
It's almost a relaunch. It's crazy to think in sales of 100k+ ?

Either way if it does big numbers Famitsu will report it from Monday.
Edit: amazon opened preorders for the new priced models. They were very low yesterday but they are rising now.
