Its never going to be Sting most successful game since their Dreamcast title Evolution did over 100k. However as I showed, their Dept. Heaven series only has 10-15k starts, so a 20k first shipment isn't anywhere close to "abysmal preorder numbers" because its actually a pretty reasonable number for them.

Ugh, again, my comment was in direct response to slaughterking's assertion. So I have no idea what you're talking about now? My whole point is that Gungnir will definitely not be Sting's most successful game. And I'm not comparing it to other Sting games - I'm just talking generally. 20k is pretty abysmal, though not dire like BLAZE UNION's sales. Just because Sting sells low numbers doesn't make it look any better. Heck, if I consider GachiTora!'s sales abysmal, then Gungnir is definitely abysmal. If Yggdra Union PSP managed 45k as a GBA port, then I don't know how you cannot view 20k as being below par.

I'm not following you either. You say you're talking generally not comparing it to other Sting games just as you keep comparing them. 20k is generally low? Yes. Is 20k low for Sting? No, its right on their general performance. You also keep using an LTD to compare with a first shipment estimate, and no regular LTD but the highest of six Dept. Heaven games, and even that one still only did <22k first week, which is also the upper range of the six. Just how is a 20k first shipment below par when the 6 comparable games did 5, 9, 13, 17, 17 and 22k in their first week. How big do you think those 6 titles first shipments were.

GachiTora! isn't a Sting game. And you yourself admit that 20k is low if compared to games generally. I only brought back Yggdra as an example, but I still stand by my assertion overall. So what are we disputing? Semantics? That's hardly anything worth disagreeing over.

Shadow Wars for the 3DS should drop the Tom Clancy and Ghost Recon from the title. Would've worked for the better to market the game overseas.

I am still wondering why Nintendo did not have Animal Crossing at launch.
That helped make the DS a beast
Once animal crossing, Mario and marios kart arrive sales will increase a lot. I think 3ds is selling okay considering there's nothing to play on it.

That's like Sony level excuses though.

For the next platform from Nintendo after the DS, this is more than a disappointing start. It might pick up, just like DS sales did, but for the successor to the DS this should be more than worrisome for Nintendo. It hasn't caught fire in any region.

I agree. It would've been in Nintendo's interest to have an adventure game available at launch. All these titles like Nintendogs, Steel Diver and Pilotwings are the kind of games we buy with Mario or Zelda. In other words, they're support titles.

I still stand firm that the price is what is really hurting it right now. The Earthquake did them no favors, but I think in light of it the price was a bad move.

So then, how does the sales of the 3DS compare with those of DSi's and DSi XL's launches?

And its biggest defining feature is almost purely visual.

Any way you slice it, this is going to be an interesting handheld generation.

You're comparing the launch of an iterative release of an established system to that of a brand new one? Well, the DSi sold over 170,000 units on its first two days of sale in Japan. Not sure how it did over the next three months though. But does it really matter?

The price is only an issue right now because there is no compelling software. If the 3DS had launched with a better software line-up i don't think the current price would have been much of a problem if at all.

As is they are trying to sell an expensive piece of hardware with few if any good games (and they are priced highly as well).

The question is when their big software finally does come to the market will it have as much of an impact as it would have if it was released straight away.

Yeah, I know about the issues with the comparison, but if there truly is a significant problem with people thinking that the 3DS is another DS model, then shouldn't it share some similarities in the sales trends? I mean, how would you gauge its importance among all the other factors being speculated?

Ok, thanks :)

That's like Sony level excuses though.
Hasnt this excuse been used for pretty much all systems that has preformed under expectation though? "When the software comes out, then hardware sales will increase".

Good marketing = good first week sales, the game doesn't have anything to sustain legs though, trade in prices have crashed, the game is filled up in used sales. (still compare the game to god of war 3/ everything else in the genre except bayonetta and DMC4) and you can consider it impressive.

They should have added multiplayer and DLC support to El Shaddai.

Do we have to go through this again?

Is it just a coincidence that the most successful systems launch at relatively stable, fixed price points such as Gameboy (79.99 / 89.99) or DS (99.99 / 129.99). Yes, the price of the DS has been creeping up but the basic system was always at the initial launch price.

Or what about this: Playstation (launched Sept 95, 299.99) Playstation2 (launched Sept 2000, also 299.99)

All the evidence suggests that high price points of handheld games such as the PSP simply do no sell well if at all.

So then, how does the sales of the 3DS compare with those of DSi's and DSi XL's launches?

It's easy to say in hindsight what price point will work, because we've seen it work. DS wasn't following a Game Boy trend--it launched for significantly higher and not everyone was sure it would pan out.

Operating income: 315m yen (last year -235m yen)
Sales: 2217m yen (+4,4%)
In its earnings statement, the company made mention of strong domestic sales. The majority of releases sold beyond expectations, it said, without giving title-by-title breakdowns. Nippon Ichi released nine titles domestically last year, seven new, one a port and one a budget release.
...
For the current fiscal year, the company expects a 3.2% increase in sales to 2,289 million yen, but a 66% drop in operating income to 107 million yen.
...
It plans on releasing 3DS and NGP titles this year, it said.
Back in black, made up losses from last year and then some profit. Nice for them. I wonder what they plan to release before April 2012 for NGP.

It has a similarly depressed curve to that of DSi LL -- I'm wondering if its a bit of DS brand fatigue, and people percieving it as basically an extension of the original DS line without properly understanding the benefits over its predecessor. It could be that Nintendo has overmilked the DS teat, and now needs to properly differentiate 3DS to make it sell... they should really start forcing people to upgrade, stop selling the old systems if necessary. They shouldn't choose to compete with 3+ different models (lite / DSi / LL) of their own device when 3DS plays games from them all.

good software releases will help. I'm sure they've got plans to improve this situation..

I'm wondering about Nintendogs. It does *look* like it's fitting the legs model; modest early sales, but they just keep coming. That said, I'm wondering if Golden Week is creating a false impression, there.

Once animal crossing, Mario and marios kart arrive sales will increase a lot. I think 3ds is selling okay considering there's nothing to play on it.

So just wait for the same old bullshit from Nintendo and it'll eventually sell... I don't think that trend is going to be repeated too many more times.

I see what you are getting at but I think certain games like Pokemon, Mario and Mario Kart are just insanely popular. They don't ensure a system is first place (see Gamecube or N64) but they do mean it would have to sell at least an amount that keeps it from being a total failure.

However, I think a lot of people are forgetting that what really made the DS stomp the PSP wasn't all the old standby franchises but the new ideas that came out of nowhere - like the Brain Age phenomenon. I am starting to seriously doubt that Nintendo is even trying to come up with something out of left field like that for the 3DS. Hopefully I am wrong though.

They may not need to honestly. Games like Mario Kart, the inevitable 2d mario that will come out, and Pokemon should be nearly enough, and of course they will still release things like nintendogs animal crossing and brain training. You also have to think that nintendo will be able to get monster hunter on the platform in some capacity, and ninty is now the platform for dragon quest etc.... If any of this is coupled with a 50 dollar/ yen equivalent price drop the 3DS should take off.

Plus the Market has kindof rejected the 250 dollar price point, and does anyone think that the NGP is going to be anything less than at least 300 dollars? Plus it's also launching with system sellers that are only really popular in the west. Games like wipeout and Uncharted are awesome, but won't sell it in japan.

I do. I think it will launch at $250. I also think that the market will reject it, though, so I don't disagree with your overall point.

They would definitely be smart to do so... But they would have to be taking heavy losses at 250, and if the market STILL rejects it, that could be pretty devastating, especially since sony is banking on the handheld market so heavily in their future video game division plans.

Also god help them if they don't keep Monster Hunter exclusive, or if the 3DS gets the first new monster hunter.

The PSP monster hunter audience would have to buy it, and that type of game can only get more sales from pokemon fans who would surely try it out simply based on the impression that it's similar to pokemon (even if it isn't).

It's called speculation, of course I'm not presuming to speak fact...

However you would have to think that the profit margins wouldn't be particularly good releasing a handheld that can produce PS3 level visuals with other expensive parts at only 250 dollars, a price which has already hurt the successor to a much more successful console, with games that appeal primarily to the western market, which was the PSP's weakest...

Also I see no reason why monster hunter wouldn't sell as well on the 3DS as it did on the PSP, provided the game is an exclusive of some sort as the 3DS is more powerful than the PSP, can replicate the control scheme from those games, has the online to do it, and has the added benefit of the fans of other monster capture games that are popular on the nintendo systems.

Also has Sony not stated that they believe the market is moving in the direction of Handhelds and that the NGP is crucially important to their business model moving forward? I'm pretty sure that they have, though I could be wrong.

you seriously think in japan pokemon fans aren't in touch with monster hunter? it's not like people who own a DS don't own a psp, especially considering both pokemon and monster hunter are social phenomenons with lots and lots of visibility.

NGP manufacturing costs are probably lower than psp at launch and that thing launched at 250. i'm not saying ngp is going to be cheaper than 250, since sony doesn't want to take a blood bath on it. the fact 3ds costs 250 doesn't mean anything, since it's been said to cost around 70 to manufacture and sony could sell its console at a break even price without incurring in big losses per console sold. don't forget another thing, sony produces much of its components in house without recurring to third parties companies that get a margin on every component sold. if the screen, the cameras, the circuitry, the media format and others things are developed and built in house by sony, they're going to spend less than what nintendo would if it was to license those same components.

There will be some more surprise hits for DS as software releases were abysmal for the first half and its users have almost nothing new to play.

wazap lists the numbers as Media Create software and they seem to come from top 100.
Sum of them is 475.000 when total software is 697.000. But there is a good possibilitty they alter the numbers a bit aka drill.blog.

to be fair, the N64 and GC didn't have the luxury of having a 2D Mario or a mainline Pokemon game, so we don't know if those could have lifted those systems to more respectable sales. Mario Kart didn't became this massive until the DS installment so it wasn't a savior at the time either and 3D Mario has been much less popular than 2D Mario.

it would be really surprising if the 3DS fails when all those big hitters appear. even a system that has survived on first party alone like the Wii has a pretty big sales total despite being in such a bad situation now.

the 3DS came out way too early imo. they should have waited until more software was ready. the NGP wasn't even going to launch head-to-head like the PSP did against DS so there wasn't pressure to rush the launch.
