Media Create Sales: Week 11, 2015 (Mar 09 - Mar 15)

Nintendo kept localizing games for third parties on 3DS: Resident Evil, Kingdom Hearts, Professor Layton, Bravely Default, Monster Hunter, Inazuma Eleven, Fantasy Life, Puzzle&Dragons. Iwata also stated that this year we will see more games under this strategy. So there are recent and relevant precedents at least.

like Dragon Quest VII ?

I went to GamesMaya today, she told me:

GamesMaya Pre-order Ranking

1. [PS4] Bloodborne (a lot of pre-orders)
2. [PSV] Sword Art Online: Lost Song
3. [3DS] Theatrhythm Dragon Quest

I asked for One Piece 3. She said that they almost don't have pre-orders for the game. But it's the kind of game that people don't pre-order and just buy directly.

I said to her that I applied for the Level 5 vision. She told me that if I had told her earlier, she could've added me as a shop staff to go with her lol
Too late now, since the inscription is over. Shi*

I'm really really sorry for asking, but how exactly does the points system for preorders work? I can't really find a proper explanation.

If you're talking about COMGnet rankings, 1pt = 1 unit sold. This refers to a single chain composed of something like 16 stores, so those are the sales in those stores. So, Type-0 HD on PS4 had 126 points in the latest chart, meaning that it sold 126 units across COMG stores.

Again, you're not saying why PS4 should be the best choice for SQEX to put DQ for what concerns the West. Also, you're not considering the fact that Nintendo is probably willing to take some duties in distributing the game in Western markets unlike Sony.

Pennywise83 said:
Nintendo hadn't localized any DQ game before bringing DQIX in Western markets.

I see some contradictions here... last DQ game published by Nintendo is 8 years old, any other DQ has not reached the western countries but you are saying Nintendo would distribute the game outside Japan
I don't see the logic into this statement

It has got to be the effort of localizing DQVII that keeps S-E or Nintendo from making it happen. They cut out text before, whoever is translating DQ are going to be overwhelmed with DQVII.

Nintendo probably would have localised the 3DS DQ games if DQXI was a 3DS game.

You don't see the logic because you're mixing up arguments.

First, I'm not saying "Nintendo would distribute the game outside Japan". We don't even know on which platform the game will be, to begin with! The argument was that a DQ game on 3DS would likely have Nintendo backing up localization in Western markets because of the following reasons: a. Nintendo is still taking care of localization duties for 3DS third party games (we have recent examples also by SQEX, such as Bravely Default), which shows an ongoing willingness to collaborate with gaming companies to bring outside Japan their games; b. Nintendo did localize many DQ games in the past, starting from DQIX up to Joker 2 in late 2011 (not 8 years ago, but barely 4 years ago); c. Sony is not taking this approach: DQ Heroes is distributed by Koei, and the company didn't even bother to help Capcom releasing MHP3rd outside Japan (i.e. one of the biggest games ever over there), and actually obstacled the release of the remaster in Western markets.

The second quote you put was a response to your post saying that Nintendo hasn't localized Rocket Slime, VII and the two Monsters; I just said that Nintendo hadn't localized any DQ before DQIX either, and then localized VI and Joker 2.

Tsutaya's report

- Resident Evil Revelations 2 topped the chart and sold better than expected. Pre-orders were good, but still, above expectations.
- Battlefield Hardline for PS4 is second and selling better than the bigger PS3 userbase. Now that the PS4 hardware is growing, should start to change and happen frequently, soon.
- Minecraft for Vita is on the 6th spot and it was very popular among elementary and junior school students. A new profile of users for Vita that could help to expand the hardware.

For next week, Sword Art Online: Lost Song could top the charts. Good expectations for Bloodborne, One Piece 3, Baseball Spirits and others too.

RER 3DS opened at 160k and on PS3 115k. Isn't it episodic with the retail release coming after all episodes have been released digitally? Need to see digital sales for full picture if thats the case.

You know this how? Let me just say you don't. Iirc SCE is publishing DQH in China.
I think there's little point talking about deals Sony/Nintendo make. They aren't exactly predictable let alone their details.

I don't know this for sure, of course. I'm just basing my argument on past Sony and Nintendo's strategy. Nintendo is localizing games for Capcom, Square Enix, Level-5, Koei-Tecmo and Sega. Nintendo localized some DQ games in the past. Sony is not, and is not even bothering to localize DQ Heroes in the West.

Well I just told Sony is localising DQH in China so now what? Maybe SE wanted to localise DQH in the West.

I was always talking about Western markets because Chinese markets work differently. This doesn't change that Nintendo has localized plenty of third party games in the past years, also from Square Enix (Bravely Default worldwide, Theatrhythm FF and KH in Europe). And that this strategy has been highly successful (see Bravely Default over a million worldwide and the spectacular launch of MH4U).

Did Nintendo localize Bravely Default, or did they just agree to publish it in the US? Because it's worth noting that the languages are also available in For The Sequel, which is a Japanese release published by Square Enix, which suggests that Square Enix owns the localization material.

This would be interesting to know. L5 games are localized by Nintendo, though.

I dont think that this means that much today. Deep Down is a PS4 exclusive, Street Fighter 5 is a PS4 console exclusive, and Sony is porting Resident Evil Revelations 2 to Vita. Ultra Street Fighter 4 is also coming to PS4. The relationship between Capcom and Sony seems pretty good today.

The reason why MHP3rd didnt make it to the west was mainly because that the game uses a service that isnt available in the west. So its more of a mutual thing. Sony didnt want to bring that service over to the west because one game used it, and Capcom didnt want to change the game to meet those requirements, so the game never got released in the west:

True, its possible that Koei Tecmo wanted to publish the game in the west early on.

It's great to see SCEJA expand on the more mainstream software with Vita titles like _ and _.

Or like any producer in this industry, he's working on other projects. If they expected SK to die, they wouldn't localize 2 in the west (you know, the game that bombed in Japan), make a marketing push for EV, and continue supporting New Wave (Marvelous Europe asked people last month if they'd be interested by a localization).

How many boob brawlers does one company need? Once Senran Kagura became a thing Marvelous stopped making Ikki Tousen games, which were also produced by Takaki.

I believe it was a company called Binari Sonori that did the localisation. Not sure who paid for it, but SE does seem to own it.

Yep. I think it was discovered when there was the "censorship" issue with BD in the west and some people sent emails here and there. S-E was the one that asked to (and did) tone down some costumes.

True, its possible that Koei Tecmo wanted to publish the game in the west early on.

KT might have pushed for it just like SE might have found an interesting deal. After all, Hyrule Warriors worked well in the west, and other crossovers usually do. It's not like there's as much to localize than in a JRPG...

Weren't those fighting games relying a lot more on the popularity of a manga though? They could have obviously tried to continue this in a different genre, but making their own IPs was probably a better thing to do.
And if boob brawlers is good for them (financially, fanbase, reputation, etc), maybe they're just trying to see if they can continue to build new IPs like this. They definitely seem to want to make more cross-media projects too.

No surprises there, still wondering if the Vita version will perform like Minecraft usually does in the west or if it will start keep pushing hardware. MS doing SCEJ work as always.

Man, can't wait for platform announcements for dq11 and mh5 so this constant discussion can come to an end and also because there are going to be massive meltdowns no matter what :)

My prediction is both games come out for ps4/vita. People can bookmark it and throw it at me if they are announced for 3ds!

Jk, hoping we'll learn about those platforms before E3 for at least one game

Edit:
Sony are localising the game for Asian markets, AFAIK.
Oh yeah, but they aren't doing it for the West, are they?
They seem to be in the same situation than Nintendo is for western market: japanese publisher don't see the point (or just are ready to give up due to no sales improvements or goals met) in a specific market that a first-party want to "conquer", so a deal is made.

Yeah, i think that sounds plausible.

Yes, but the point was that it's not thanks to Sony, as far as anybody knows.
True, but in that case, i dont think that specific example is something that we can go by and guess if Dragon Quest XI will be published by Sony or not in the west (if the game is coming to Playstation that is).

That's true, for example NOA provided ad support for multiple Capcom published 3DS games (SSF4, RER, MH4U).

Nintendo hadn't localized any DQ game before bringing DQIX in Western markets.
NOA localized Dragon Warrior on NES in 1989.

Oh yeah, I completely agree on that point. It was just to correct some misunderstanding.
Sony could perfectly at least help on marketing and localization (if not as many publishing duties as they can). They could perfectly herald XI as the revival of the good old JRPGs from the PS2 era for example. I think this has a lot of potential on this point.
Can't see that happening again for a MonHun 5 if Capcom asked Sony though.

MH5 & DQ XI may be announced for PS4, but you can guarantee they won't have a vita version. Both Capcom and SE seems to hate the console for some reasons.
