Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Summary:

- 7.4GB Install (22GB on XBO)
- Better than feared but rougher than expected
- Reduced graphical settings (no motion blur etc) over XBO
- General performance similar or worse than XBO
- 30 FPS target, reaches in non-stress areas but in stress battles can stay at 24~25 FPS
- Prone to 100, 200ms spikes which can cause lurches to low teen FPS
- Can take seconds for objects, world etc to load in

- Load times are slightly faster than XBO. Around 1 minute.
- Docked: 720p DRS, low seen 576p
- Handheld. 540p with possible DRS
- Texture quality, texture filtering, lighting, shadow maps notably reduced over XBO
- "Xbox 360 / PS3 generational like look"
- Some minor improvements have been made in patch 1.1 on things like hair.

- Areas have been cut/changed to reduce CPU usage
- character animation also reduced in cut-scenes / talking scenes
- All visual changes 'add up to a stark difference' in side by side with XBO

- Motion blur, SSO etc also removed.
- Distant characters animation, NPC count, animation quality all reduced as well
- Additional 1 minute load added to Hogmead and all stores in it, which were all seamless on all other platforms.

- Audio quality compressed, missing sound effects but not as bad as feared.

- Everything takes a hit but generally still playable.

Sounds like a lot of work.

I’m not as sure this version will do so well as other people seem to be. It’s LTTP and it makes lots of compromises. Two years ago such a port would have been better received, now there’s other portable machines to play these games with better specs. It’s one thing to play Skyrim or old GTA games on Switch, it’s another to play an actual current-gen game.

Switch is still a massively popular system for this game's target audience. The same people that don't care about these comparisons. The same people who will be putting this game on their Christmas list. I doubt the Switch port was that expensive and they managed to pull it off for the holidays and it turned out acceptable without compromising the development of the other games. Win-win all around.

Just goes to show how modern games can still be ported to ps3 era hardware as long as certain compromises are made.

I liked hogwarts but it was not pushing any boundaries.

As with most Switch ports of last gen games I guess it's ok if you've got absolutely no other system to play it on or if portability is essentially for you and you don't have a Steam Deck or some other more powerful device.

Because most of them are doing nothing particularly new in terms of gamepaly, world design, interactivity, etc. Gaming is largely still stuck in the Ps3 era of design.
The only truly new thing most AAA offer are visuals, and those can be scaled back

This port has a fair amount going against it--obvious visual downgrade comoared to other mainstream systems, months late to the party/missed the hype cycle. On the other hand, it is launching right before the holiday, the Switch has a massive installed base, and the sales of the game on other platforms speaks volumes for the hunger of the potential audience.

The game will sell or flop on those factors. The fact that there are a handful of extremely niche and far more expensive handheld devices out there that can run it better won't have a measurable impact on sales among the core audience, let alone with mainstream consumers.

Ive started playing on SX but the framerate still sucks. Best mode for me is uncapped performance.

The fact it works at all is a miracle. This is a game which can crush my gaming PC with a 5800X3D, 32 GB of RAM, and a 3090.

And yet it works on a machine which can be played as a handheld and honestly it is completely recognizable as the same game with cutbacks.

The developers should be praised for making this port work and actually look and run better than the Switch version of Mortal Kombat 1.

the worst part of this port remains the depopulation effect, as seen in other videos. i'm not a huge 'immersion' fan, but a semi-deserted hogwarts is seriously noticeable, & disturbing...
