Ghost in the Shell getting a direct anime adaptation of Masamune Shirow's original manga

I still have my dog-eared and sun-faded copy of ID from the 90's which I've carted around from country to country throughout my career <3
I have ID 1-3, never got 4 as the focus on CG rendered video game stuff didn't interest as much. Would have loved to collect the Exon Depots but that was just too difficult, though some seem to be in the Pieces books so I might get them that way. There is just precious little about all this stuff in english (probably due to the nature of it, I guess) so it's hard to really grok what is even available. Is there still a big Shirow footprint in Japan, was there ever?

Didn't know the VA for Motoko passed away. Won't be the same

SAC is still my all time favorite series.

Hopefully this is well-executed. The tone of the manga is very different than the first two movies. Curious how they're going to approach a direct adaptation.

Huh I have a regular Japanese copy of the first Ghost in the Shell manga that you can buy on Amazon Japan right now. Is this version censored?

Does it have the lesbian scene in it (pages 53 and 54, perhaps)? If yes then it's uncensored.

AFAIK the Japanese version wasn't ever censored, which is another reason that I call bullshit on Kodansha's claim that the recent English editions were censored at Shirow's behest.

I had a look and yeah it's included. So only 1.5 and 2 have censored stuff in Japan. I had a look to see what got cut and it doesn't seem worth dropping a lot of money for the fully uncensored box set. Shirow is an odd guy lol.

So I got a Solid Box from ebay japan for about $250. The hardback GitS and MMI are nice, proper Japanese and both the uncensored versions. Full size as well, like my OG Dark Horse GitS paperback versus the newer 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 set that's more of a pocket size. Also has some art pages and a poster. There there is a nice grapefruit size plastic Fuchikoma model. But for some reason it's mostly clear plastic to represent the cloaked ability, which makes it kinda lame for display. Also has a little inch long silver model.

Anyway, pretty cool for reference and seeing the artwork, though I don't read (or speak) Japanese so it's mostly for show.

I also started getting the Pieces hardback art books. Those are really well done but wooooow, #3 on is pretty hard core hentai, much more than the exon depot panels they were expanded from. Still very cool, but definitely not for kids. Still, it's nice to have his stuff in a good format, plus the books came with some inserts and partial sleeves which seems like a Japan thing and are an interesting presentation. I plan on finishing up the Pieces run (9 volumes in total i think) the get the 3 Pieces Gem books. That should do it, I think, unless I try for the wierder stuff like the Wet Cat books or whatever they were called. I figure in a few years I can use vr glasses to translate the Japanese on the fly and read the books as if they were in english.

Got some other Shirow books today as well!

So, about the W-Tails Cat and Greaseberries books: those have had Italian translations. Why do I bring it up? They're still censored, but if you can't read Japanese it's probably easier to translate from Italian than Japanese. Especially since some of the text in the Japanese editions is hard for auto translators to understand.

EDIT: Something about MMI that I rediscovered that I'd forgotten about: before the English release was published, Dark Horse were saying that there was going to be an adult version with more "content" than the Solid Box release. Obviously, that version was never published, but I wonder if Shirow did any work on it...

You tell me this right after I order the 3 W-Tails books from a Japanese source :p

I have seen Italian copies up for sale, good to now they were degenerate enough to get a local translation while the English market goes unfed :p

I think I'll take a little pause after completing the Pieces and PiecesGem sets Greaseberries and all the intron depot books i don't have, as well as that newer series Pandora, can wait a bit. The literary value of this stuff is kinda low, I may go check out some of the newer ghost related books/comics.
