Ghost in the Shell getting a direct anime adaptation of Masamune Shirow's original manga

Ghost in the Shell is a familiar property to many, and a strong example of the value in transformative adaptations that create something new and interesting. Mamoru Oshii's films and Kenji Kamiyama's Stand Alone Complex series are some of the best ever in the medium, but they are not direct adaptations of Masamune Shirow's original manga. Instead, they tapped into it heavily in order to create new storylines.

If you've never read the manga, you'll recognize the core cast of characters and many of the themes, but its tone is very different. It doesn't have the somber existentialism of Oshii or the grounded realism of Kamiyama. It's a bit wild. But it certainly stands on its own merit.

Shirow is an adult creator by trade, and most of his other works are squarely in H territory, but he stepped into the mainstream for Ghost in the Shell with a huge number of ideas. It became one of the foundational cyberpunk works, directly influencing the likes of The Matrix, Avatar, and Battle Angel Alita, along with scores of others.

And now, we'll get to see it animated. Well, probably aside from the famously censored pages!

The new series, a direct adaptation, is being made by Science Saru, the studio behind Ping Pong the Animation, Devilman Crybaby, and Dandadan. Coming in 2026.

Unfortunately, Atsuko Tanaka, the iconic voice actress for Motoko Kusanagi in previous adaptations, recently passed away.

Do we know who is directing? Ping Pong and DMCB were both Maskaki Yuasa and if Yuasa is doing a new GitS we are living in the best timeline.

It's in production but they haven't revealed the staff members yet as far as I can tell.

Looks plausible that he could be directing though. He's not attached to anything upcoming:

That's pretty cool. I've never read the manga, but I love that original film, and the stand-alone complex anime is fantastic. It's a top ten for me.

I never got around to reading it.

Looking forward to it.

I'll add the manga to my 2025 Read List 👀

highly recommend reading the original manga. it's really impressive consider the time it was published. the two sequels, 1.5 (Human Error Processor) and 2 (Man Machine Interface) are both great also.

edit: and I'm gonna also say, give Orion, Appleseed series and Dominion series a shot too. they are all wonderful in terms of art and world design.

Yeah exactly my thought, he's been real quiet lately.

Although putting an auteur director in charge of a project whose goal is faithfulness to the source is a bit of a gambit in its own right.

Yeah, I wonder if "that" scene will make the cut. As far as I am aware I don't think the Dark Horse translation keeps that in, or at least it was cut from some reprints.

I read the Dark Horse copy so not sure I know what you're referring to. What's the scene? Use spoilers obviously.

Ghost in the Shell is so awesome. I'm looking forward to a "different" take on it (which is technically the original take, but you know what I mean :messenger_winking:)

This is really hard to adapt, Shirow regularly goes on tangents with descriptive texts of why certain things happened, how it worked, etc. There's a certain texture to the world he created that isn't displayed solely through panels. Hopefully they capture some of it.

I believe it's the scene where Bato was contacting the major via direct connection, and he
ended up crashing into the major's lesbian threesome and experiencing what female orgasm feels like while not having the appropriate organ.

I'm interested. SAC's very good but it's its own thing in terms of story, and while Oshii's films loosely adapt stories from the manga, they're completely different to it in many ways.

I generally agree, but I thought Man Machine Interface was weak. I've tried to like it but I just don't. It's pretty, but the story's a load of technobabble filled nonsense with psuedo-philosophical trappings IMO.

Is this going to be worthwhile? My understanding is that the original manga isn't very good and that Mamoru Oshii's heavily made changes to characters and tone, which basically is what all future visions use as inspiration

It wasn't in the original English version, but was in a later reprint (the first smaller format release). It then got taken out again when Kodansha took over publishing from Dark Horse, and my suspicion is that they removed it because more eyes were on it with the PG-13 rated movie being released.

Kodansha claim that it was Shirow's decision to take it out of the latest reprints, but I don't trust them for several reasons:
The wording they used was more or less identical to that which Studio Proteus used when justifying the censorship of the original release back in the '90s, which makes me wonder when he agreed to this. It's still in their Japanese bilingual version. Finally, I have trouble believing that a guy who wrote the main character of some of his more recent works to be a Special Analyst would suddenly get all prudish over a relatively tame scene unless he was being leant on.

It's really fucking annoying to be honest. I would have liked that hardback collection, but I don't support censored releases.

I think Science Saru could match the animation quality but they go for more cartoony and exaggerated style. They had the best Star Wars Visions episode btw. Tribute to Star Wars and Astro Boy.

Wow.

Are those manga pages like this one:

From a revised edition or something? Looks amazing. Nevertheless cool news, let's wait and see. Thanks for sharing.

The colours are punchier than in the bilingual edition that I've got (and it's flipped) but that's from the original manga. The original GITS manga doesn't have many pages like this though; it's mainly in black and white.

Ahh ok. Yeah I was aware that most Manga is in B/W hence my inquiry, thanks s_mirage s_mirage =)

I don't know where you heard such slander but a faithful adaptation would definitely be worth it. the manga has so much more in terms of story than the great anime by Oshii and the overall mood is also a little lighter. hell, the SAC series was definitely inspirited more by the manga than Oshii's work.

yeah, the opening for the PS1 game is so SO good.

The panel above is from Chapter 8 of Ghost in the Shell. The first section of each chapter in GitS 1 and 1.5 is in color, and Ghost in the Shell 2: Man Machine Interface is fully colored.

The original manga is good, but it's not a captivating narrative. It's a bunch of cool ideas about the future being explored through the vehicles of edgy violence and sex appeal--fundamental attributes of the cyberpunk genre. I'd argue that Shirow's GitS, Oshii's GitS, and Kamiyama's GitS all have distinct tones. Kamiyama's interpretation isn't much like Oshii's.

The adaptations are transformative classics in their own right, yes, but the core of all of it is there in the manga. The manga is a relatively quick read so it's easy to find out for yourself.

I'll give it a look. TBH, my only experiences with the franchise are SAC and the original movie, but I liked both a lot. Is my boy Togusa in the manga?

Helluva a lot of random tits and naked ladies in the two original mangas. Didn't Shiro basically just become a full on porn artist?

Pretty much, though he seems to be going through a protracted dry spell. Aside from producing a picture or two for Comic Anthurium every month he hasn't released much in the last five years. He's released new (non-h) art books too, but most of the art in them is also at least 5 years old.

Can you even get the uncensored version anymore? I have a copy of it but it adds little. The uncensored man machine interface is apparently VERY hard to source, never even printed in english, and also adds basically nothing since Shirow himself censors the works with alternate panels.

Anyway, it would be cool if they can match his art aesthetic, particularly his detailed hand drawn stuff back then. His digital art is also quite cool but doesn't have the same appeal for me.

So because I'm an impulsive idiot I went ahead and ordered the SOLID BOX from japan, which was apparently the only really uncensored print of Man-Machine Interface. Comes with 1.0 and 2.0 in nice hardbound books, a fuchikoma figure, and some art pamphlets. All in japanese, which I don't read, but it was a limited run(?) from like 2000 so I figured why not? Should get it in a week or so, will report back.

For interesting Shirow collectibles there's also Cyberdelics. It's a box set of 10 GitS posters with special printing (foil, holo type stuff) and other goodies. Might be a challenge to actually display though!

Heh heh, his love of the skin tight body suit, the lean and athletic but also busty build, and positioning for the crotch shot always makes his stuff tough to have around the house. I've been collecting the PIECES art books and I'm always a little sweaty when one comes in.

At least Frazzetta, Elmore, Timm, or Cho have less pornographic posing in their nudes :p

Anyone remember the GitS game for PS2 (or was it PSP)> Zipping around in a fuchikoma was so fun, maybe someone will revisit the full GitS experience. Or do a proper Appleseed with those mech suits that have the human (or android) in the belly but you can see the arms move and the mech mirror the motion. Always thought that was a very underutilized control system (versus just "brain waves" or some sort of joystick system). Shirows eye for technical detail is unparallelled.

Is Intron Depot still in print (the first one with his work from '80 to '90, not the later CG abominations from his H career in the late 90's onward)? fwiw, it has the uncensored pages of the infamous Boat Scene from GitS albeit in Japanese.

I'm know I'm old, but I miss 80's-90's Shirow :( I've got all of his narrative stuff from Black Magic to a Japanese copy of his unfinished collection of Appleseed 5 chapters (published decades later in English as Appleseed Hypernotes)

Anyway, back on topic, imma be real and say I didn't like the Oishii Gits movie for the longest time.

There I said it.

It was way too.... slow and... Oishii-y for me when I was expecting the crazy chaos of the manga. Over the years, and not being an edgy student anymore I've come to appreciate it (and the GitsSAC stuff) on their own merits.
However. I'd still love to see a take on his original vision but I guarantee such a thing isn't possible in this day and age, when it was clearly not even possible in the 90's.

I hear Devilman Crybaby, by the same studio making the new GitS, was shockingly explicit all around. So I am expecting this to be faithful outside of the handful of sex pages that Shirow had to disavow and redraw. Aside from those pages GitS is basically a normal R rated experience, and it has a lot of respect as a seminal classic.

It is still readily available, even off amazon. I have an old copy of ID1 so I can check to see if that panel is in there.

For me, shirow shines with just his nudes, as I like his body model. You'd need to hire a gymnast or professional dancer, then fatten them up for a month or two, to replicate it in real life. Though I did know (and alas, didn't know her know her) a competitive diver that was about as close to a shirow girl as I've seen. How she made so little splash hitting the water I could never figure out :p

Don't need any sex acts, they have always felt a little tacked on. But a shower scene or just how carefree an android would be with a synthetic body around their own house adds to the world building. So I'll settle for just some really pretty girls in body suits and form fitting armor going out and wrecking shit with automatic weapons :p

I still have my dog-eared and sun-faded copy of ID from the 90's which I've carted around from country to country throughout my career <3
