gaming burnout - whats your solution ?

How do you guys deal with burnout ?

you finish a game or two and you feel like no other game could satisfy you , you feel like its just more of the same so its very hard to start a new game , there is no motivation

you take a long brake between games ? or you never get burnout ?

Play a systems-based indie game with tonnes of depth, e.g. Subnautica or Astroneer.

This is what I use to punctuate the periods between finishing the big hitters.

So, I’m still off for another week or two because I recently had surgery. Physically, I’m okay to play games or watch movies/shows, but being stuck at home has been lame, and I’m feeling pretty burned out right now.

Do you guys have any go-to games for when you’re in a gaming burnout?

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife

My advice would be to try stuff that's out of your usual comfort zones. You might discover your new favorite thing.

Couldn't agree more with TintoConCasera TintoConCasera . The last few lulls I got into sent me into a panic because I've loved video games since I was roughly about 5 years old. But I started checking out some things that I thought were minorly interesting. Definitely the types of games I wouldn't normally flock towards, and a few stuck. Hard. It's important to listen to your mind/body, but if you feel the urge to WANT to play something and just don't know where to start, just give something new a shot. You never know!

When i have a gaming burnout i build LEGO Sets. Super relaxing and it's still playing with plastic toys :messenger_beaming:

Got civ vi yesterday. It's not completely new to me, I played civ v years ago but I dont remember anything but damn the wall has hitting me pretty crazy.

I'll try to get some more stuff while the steam sale is going and try to get out of my comfort zone. The problem is depending on my mood I play shitton of different genres.

Usually I go after rouge likes, but I have a feeling that's not enough this time haha.

I have some gaming related puzzles waiting for me. Maybe i should tackle that. It's annoying to feel that way when you have infinite time for a few weeks haha.

There are times when I have no shows or movies to watch because I've seen everything that I'm into at that point. Same with gaming. So I can take long breaks until something pops up or maybe I'm in the mood for a certain genre or game. Forcing yourself to play games is like forcing yourself to eat candy.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
I've often taken a few days off of any gaming after finishing a big RPG, or a game that resonated with me really well.

eg, Persona 4. It was both a massive game and left me forlorn at how well it concluded but I still wanted to see more of those characters.

Did not feel like playing anything else for a few days after beating it the first time.

I rarely have this issue because I have too many interests/hobbies. Movies, books, hitting the gym, bouldering, manga, anime, meditation, watch soccer, produce art,...

I do feel like most games tend to overstay their welcome. 30-50 hrs is cool, more than that... Ehh.

But yeah, overcome burnout by expanding your interests I guess?

I've been playing a lot of retro consoles lately. ( and spent a lot of money 😵‍💫 ). There is just something about playing on the actual hardware that makes it more of a real experience that I never could get with emulators.

Right now I'm going through parasite eve 2 on PlayStation.
Last game I played was shining in the darkness on Saturn and I was glued even though I played it way back in the day I forgot most of it. Before that I played and English patched ys 4 dawn of ys on pcengine with English voices. That's a Gabe that doesn't get enough attention.

I would love to play shadow hearts again but I don't have my original copy anymore.

I regularly swap genres; I don't like to play two 3rd person games in a row, for example.

So, I'll play a 3rd person game, then a first person shooter, then a 2d game, then myself a puzzle game of some sort, then back to a 3rd open world thing.

It can make finding the next thing to play a bit tricky, and so you need to plan ahead a bit..! But, yeah, it stops me from feel burned out.

Being stuck at home can make it rather difficult to "stay invested in games".

Someone recently compared gaming with friends, with eating a bar of chocolate. It's food. But it's not that nutritious if it's the only thing you eat. Going to a pub with friends or a great party, or visiting family and spending quality time, or achieving some goals with sports, these are the nourishing meals and moments. Gaming is entertainment, and we can and should be passionate about it if we want to. But if you want to avoid the burnout vibes, diversify, I guess :)

And taking breaks can help with maintaining interest.

Balance is key, that's all that matters. Oh yeah, and fun, allow yourself to have fun ☺️

Usually, for me, it’s when I have to much work and I am so tired that gaming becomes a chore.
When work stuffs are calming down it is not a problem anymore.
Or sometimes one new game comes out and I really love it and the passion comes back.

One other problem I have is that I hop easily on the hype train and most of the time, it’s disappointing and could lead to a gaming burnout too.

But I’m only 49, I will be an adult soon, everything will change 😋

So I’d say, don’t force yourself into playing if you don’t really want to.
Or replay an old beloved game.
Something that calls your inner gamer.

And listen to nihilistic black metal and brutal death metal. 🤘

I burned myself out on RPGs and turn-based games after playing JA3 and BG3 back to back.
So I took a break from that genre completely and tried out First Descendant, an GAAS looter shooter. Something I never thought I'd be into and frankly I only tried it out because it was F2P and the visuals appealed to me.
Been enjoying it though as the missions are short and quick, there are many items and characters to hunt, and there is no death penalty so if I had to drop the controller and leave the game because my 2 year old or my wife need my attention immediately I can.

Don’t play games for a while? Focus on other hobbies, other interests, or make some new ones if you don’t have any other existing ones. The gaming bug will come back in due course.
