FF16 and FF7 Remake + Rebirth

Not trying to start a war of which is better, but as I picked up FF16 and FF7 Rebirth from PSN sale today, I am trying to decide which game to start playing first.

I also have FF7 Remake which I only played for like 5-6 hours before distracted by something else.

If I start FF7, I would need to finish the remake first that would make a bigger commitment. Any opinions on this?

I was excited to buy XVI a couple weeks ago. I am a huge Final Fantasy fan and enjoy all of the games to some extent…even stuff like Dirge of Cerberus. I gave XVI a few hours. It’s not only a bad FF game. It’s also just a terrible game in general. Thankfully it was physical and I was able to trade it in and not be at a complete loss. It has made me very hesitant in future numbered FF games.

7 Remake has some pacing issues but is overall quite a good game.

Rebirth is my favorite FF since X so i think i can easily recommend this one.

XVI disappointed me, not a bad game per say but... not what I wanted from FF and the lows are too low.

FFXVI if You like kind of fantasy or mild dark fantasy
FFVIIR if You like shounen type story

Both are fine their own, and to each to their own

I loved FFXVI, I love Remake, I love all FFs for different reasons. One of the worst things about the FF fandom is the tendency to choose one or two favourites and then shit on the rest, I don't have that problem.

Only a few replies in and the "fans" haven't disappointed 👌

Anyway, I'd say go Rebirth/Remake back-to-back only because if the stars align FFXVI will get a Pro patch and you will be able to experience it's glory in the best possible way. I still think about the game often, the spectacle, the soundtrack, the epic boss fights, the characters. I had my fair share of criticisms (that I'm not going to repeat here) but man, I loved that game. Of the 3 I'd say Rebirth is the "best" though.

I've beat 16 recently on PC. Have never played Rebirth. I would imagine Rebirth is better. More things to do and more characters to control. The combat in 16 starts to wear thin down the stretch. Especially if you play the DLCs.

Finish Remake so that you can you can slowly regret not being able to refund the Rebirth purchase.

I didn't even find much depth in it. Certainly not on the level of something like God Of War Ragnarok which has just as many RPG elements if not more.
There are a lot of combo and juggling routes if you want to go in depth but yes you can certainly just mash. It sucks because late game I was just spamming cooldowns and all the potential was just like .. "but why". Also the RPG elements in 16 are barebones af. Easily the least satisfying RPG mechanics in any FF to date

FF16 is mediocre. FF7 remake is good and contained, but only takes place in midgar which makes the environment variety lacking. FF7 rebirth is a convoluted mess story wise, but still better than FF16.

Clive has a basic slash attack string. It never changes. At least if they weren't going to do weak attack and heavy attack button combo strings like most action games(God Of War, Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta) they could at least have used DMC's system where pausing during certain points in the attack string changes the attack combo route.

The basic attacks and the weaving is supposed to be for combo extension and linking, just like Torgal. I don't think they're supposed to be the main event.

I surprised at all the hates ff16 got, wow. I hated ff15, but I thought fantasy setting of ff16 brought it back to the series route.

I loved ff4,5,6, and then the original 7, and 10. I found even 12 was decent despite of abrupt finishing.

It's still a decent game, it just has a lot of glaring weaknesses. It had the potential to be a much greater game which is why there's a lot of disappointment

That's what I don't like about it. Would have much rather the Eikons functioned exactly like acquiring a new weapon in DMC. New skills and new attacks. Another action rpg game that comes to mind is Jedi Survivor that has four different lightsaber styles with different skills, different feel, AND different attack strings to go along with them.

FF16 is a good game. Only issue is some of the side quests are terrible. Good characters, good performances, good story, good action rpg gameplay.

FF7 is a much better game and experience than FF16. However, FF16 is less of a time commitment and you can finish it fast. FF7 for maximum enjoyment requires a large chunk of time. both are worth playing, but be prepared to sink countless hours into Ff7 for all the side quests/games/stories. If you have any nostalgia for FF7, you want to savour every moment.

I would as far as telling you don't bother with the DLC for 16. It didn't add anything of importance to the story and just made the game longer than it needed to be.

FF16 suffers from the same fate as FF14ARR - it has slow (and boring) start - a low man doing low jobs. Latter half is good though. Sidequests become good and meaningful, story expand itself and Epic... is just over9000... it's Epic and FF7R2 and other games just crawl in the dust.
FF7R2 is uneven and often overbloated all the way. Cutscenes though miles ahead of FF16.

FF16 was massively disappointing. The first act is is good, but then it falls off a cliff and just goes into the same done-to-death boring JRPG tropes for the rest of the story.

FF 16 has an awesome intro to the world, just outstanding and then it falls off a cliff and lands knee deep in Chocobo Poodoo.

FF 7 Rebirth is all in all just the better game, i had a great time with it.

I am a big fan of both, but Remake+Rebirth captured everything I love about FF.

Rebirth in particular is ridiculous and is of the few modern JRPGs that offers the scale and variety you'd get in a PS1 adventure blown up to high end modern visuals.

Finish Remake plus the Yuffie DLC then go Rebirth and forget about FFXVI.

I enjoy RPGs for its story and characters. If FF16 delivers on that end, I will be satisfied.
The major problem with 16 is pacing primarily when your start the boat quest, everything else is top tier, the problem with FF7Re is pacing and too much trash side Quest just to bloat game lenght.

Play the first hour or so of each (16 and remake). See which grabs you more. Both (counting remake and rebirth as one) are lengthy games, especially if you want to see all of the content, so you'll want be invested.

You can always come back to the other later.

Depends on how familiar you are with the FF setting and the FF world, and especially the FF7 setting. If you haven't played FF games before, then it's easier to start with FF16 - it's a simple linear game that goes through pretty quickly. But I'll say right away that FF7-FF7R are objectively better games, but you'll have to buy two at once since they are connected by a plot, and if these are your first games in the FF7 universe, then it's better to start with Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion - since it's actually a prequel to FF7 and tells about how it all actually started and where the game's legs grow from. Because FF7 actually starts from the moment Crisis Core ends and the game kind of assumes that you know the events that happened there.

Although to be honest all three games are passable, and you are unlikely to ever replay them, the only difference is that in the case of FF16 you just need to buy one game and play through it, in the case of FF7, if you want to understand the world and the history of this world, you will actually have to buy 3 games.
