Did you favorite video game genres change as you grew older?

This one hits close to home. The last bloated game I played was Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and I could not finish it. I haven't touched a 40-hour campaign game since.
The only die-and-retry game that I can play now are Souls game, and they take a toll. Otherwise, unless they are very forgiving (e.g., some roguelites like Hades), I have to skip them.
Here are a few games I liked, just in case you find one that fits your tastes, don't hesitate to share yours :

Shiren 5+, that's a roguelike, pretty old series, very interesting mechanics, and rewarding
Dead Cells, roguelike, 2D action, one run is less than an hour so it works well
Brigandine, Strategy RPG, one campaign can be done in 30 hours or less and it is very fun, zero bloat
Star Ocean 2R, excellent remake, super fun, fast pacing, choices, no bloat, not too long (30 hours)
Valkyria Chronicles 4, excellent Tactical RPG, no bloat or very few, you from battle to battle, respects your time (40 hours)
Dead or Alive 6, only fighting game I can still enjoy, great AI, easy to play
Sonic x Shadow, action platformer, Sonic games are usually really fun and pretty short, you can replay them, this one is excellent
Project Zero, great game from KT, dark atmosphere, scoring system, one stage is less than 1 hour
Streets of Rage 4, excellent beat em up
Catherine, Outer Wilds, Talos Principle, The Forgotten City : all interesting puzzle/mind games
Witch on the Holy Night is my favorite recent VN, Steins Gate (original game) is a must play as well
Metroid Prime Remastered, amazing game, looks very good, not too long, exploration

It mainly changed for 2D fighting game. I was a huge fan as a teenage and sink hours in the lab.

Then we were meeting regularly with friends to play all together (toGuilty Gear X, X2, Garou : MOTW mainly).

But now, while still getting hyped for each new Guilty Gear or interesting 2D fighter(Fatal Fury : COTW looks fire !) I can’t get into it. Last one I really dive into was Dragon Ball FighterZ. It was great but I didn’t get the same joy from labbing.
I think playing online against strangers, remove big part of my joy from the genre. Even online with friends, it’s not the same than in local.

Recently we kind of went back in time with 2 friends and had the opportunity to do a gaming night (local) on GG : Strive and it was a blast. The game is amazing and bantering with them, adapting to their playstyle over several matches etc…. Everything was perfect.

But now I can’t see myself labbing alone to fight against strangers online. And I never really liked playing against AI…

So that’s it for me :fighting game lost part of their appeal but it’s mainly due to me and my friend becoming adult and living not close to each others.

I still like the same games, but I've reduced the time I put in a great deal. That makes it harder to sink into some of the strategy/simulations I used spend too much time on.

Oh yes.

Growing up, even before my teens, I was heavily into real-time strategy games like Age of Empire, Stronghold, Rise of Nations, etc. Now, I can't play those games (mental energy and time commitments).

Now, I much prefer third-person action-adventure games.

The opposite actually, I wasted 3 decades hating turn based games for no fucking reason, I think people are dumper when they hate something.

I still play classic style shoot 'em up & platformers as well as the new stuff, so not really. Also, some genres simply did not exist in the form they do today. SotN was basically it for the longest time, now we have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to Metroidvania style games. Rogue-likes of today look like nothing we had 20 years ago.
Same goes for art style, today we get more pixel art games in a year than we got the entire PS1/2/3 eras combined.

I am all about games you can just fire up a match. It's why for about a year my main game was Overwatch. And why I drifted away from the MMO craze when WoW took hold. Although I was a PSO fanatic when it was new, I pretty much got the online RPG thing "out of my system" way back on that title.

Starcraft, Smash, Halo, Towerfall and Pokemon TCG I could cycle endlessly. Very condensed fun, gets right to a flow state, and is over without commitment pretty quickly.

used to like the old rainbow6/ghost recon games (tactical shooters--perma death; usually one bullet kills you; before opening fire on an enemy, you'd generally ensure your flanks were covered and you had an exit strategy; gun choice was very important; gun accuracy was greatly impacted by how you move and fire, etc.)

but r6 became an action game with r6: vegas and onward where you just easily pew pew baddies.

just dont care for arma--has its moments (cool balistics), but just way too many jank i guess.

They changed.

I can't stand anything that is wasting my time. So I skip all bloated games. I also don't enjoy anymore die & retry formulas, because this is basically wasting my time as well. Overall, I have become incredibly intolerant to any type of bullshit.

So right now, I mainly enjoy RPGs and Turn Based games if they have a good pacing and no bloat, politics nor bullshit. And in terms of action games, I will play shorter/older games. Visual Novels are also good. And anything that triggers some interesting thought process, like puzzle games for example.
Almost the same for me, with the exception that sometimes I want to play a game with simple mechanics, even if too long, when I look (or listen) to something in the other monitor. The last example was Immortals Fenyx Rising that I loved (only the main game, I hated all the DLCs...), but don't ask about the story because I almost didn't taken care about it...

I used to play fighting games non stop in my teen years. They are just novelties to me now. I just can’t be bothered to learn all of the moves and train. They were fun in the arcade when you were head to head with someone. I lost interest after arcades died.

No I still like JRPGs the most.

I'm almost completely turned off by FPS shooters now though. Other than for like an online game a SP FPS shooter just bores the shit out of me. I used to play them nonstop when I was a kid on my PC. It's amazing how the AI in FPS shooters is still dumb as rocks. Seems like FEAR was the most advanced AI I ever encountered in an FPS game and I've never seen anything top it. I tried playing Far Cry 5 I think it was an the enemies just kept pouring in and I would mindlessly shoot them and all I could think is who enjoys this mindless garbage?

I got back into fighting games once they went online and I could play against people. Then I quickly dropped it because I've never encountered so much anger for someone losing a game in my life. I got reported so many times on 360 and got nasty messages all because they lost.
