The *Ys* franchise, developed by Nihon Falcom, began in 1987 with *Ys I: Ancient Ys Vanished*, setting the stage for a long-running action RPG series. The game introduced players to the red-haired adventurer, Adol Christin, who would become the series' iconic protagonist. Known for its fast-paced "bump combat" system, where players simply rammed into enemies to deal damage, the original *Ys* stood out for its innovative mechanics, memorable music, and a rich fantasy world steeped in mystery. The game's success quickly led to the release of *Ys II*, forming a duology that told the story of the ancient kingdom of Ys and Adol’s journey to uncover its secrets.

As the series progressed through the 1990s and 2000s, *Ys* gained a reputation for its tight gameplay, excellent soundtracks (largely composed by the Falcom Sound Team JDK), and engaging narratives, though it remained a niche franchise outside of Japan for much of this period. With titles like *Ys III: Wanderers from Ys* experimenting with side-scrolling action and *Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys* and *Memories of Celceta* offering deeper explorations of the world, the series continued to evolve. The franchise shifted to a more modernized action-RPG system with *Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim* in 2003, abandoning the bump combat in favor of a more direct attack system, which would influence the gameplay of subsequent titles.

The release of *Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana* in 2016 marked a turning point for the series, receiving widespread critical acclaim for its deep storytelling, fast-paced combat, and expansive world. This game, along with the later *Ys IX: Monstrum Nox*, helped to elevate the series to greater international prominence, expanding its fanbase beyond Japan. Today, *Ys* is celebrated for its thrilling combat, memorable characters, and captivating adventures, with Adol Christin's legendary journeys continuing to captivate players across generations.

Ys X: Nordics takes place in the northern sea regions of Obelia Bay, where the red-haired adventurer Adol Christin encounters a seafaring people known as the Normans. The game focuses on the mysteries surrounding these people and introduces a new system involving naval exploration and combat. As Adol delves deeper into this region, he faces a powerful new threat tied to an ancient civilization. *Ys X* also introduces a dual combat system, allowing players to switch between solo and team-based fighting styles, adding depth to the fast-paced action gameplay.

Ys X: Nordics introduces new gameplay elements that expand on the series' signature fast-paced combat and exploration. One of the standout features is the **Cross Action system**, which allows players to switch between "Solo Mode," where Adol fights alone with more precise control, and "Combination Mode," where he fights alongside a partner for coordinated, more powerful attacks. This dual-combat approach adds flexibility and strategy to battles.

Another key aspect of the game is **naval exploration**. For the first time in the *Ys* series, players can pilot a ship, exploring the seas and islands of the Obelia Bay. This adds a new layer of adventure, as players navigate open waters, discover hidden locations, and engage in ship-to-ship combat. The naval mechanics tie into the game’s overarching theme of exploration, blending traditional land-based action with oceanic journeys.

The game also introduces a **Mana Action system**, which integrates platforming and environmental interaction into the gameplay. Players can manipulate certain elements of the environment, solving puzzles or overcoming obstacles in creative ways. Together, these systems provide a fresh, dynamic approach to the *Ys* experience while maintaining the series' core focus on fast, fluid combat and exploration.

Waiting for my special edition from NISA, but may not get around to playing it until next year, I'll see how my docket is.

I've played the devil for about an hour and I'm very close to buying this. I have to come in falcon for coming into the PS4 era of graphics. But it looks really good and sharp. Nothing heads hurting but this isn't a multi-billion dollar studio.

Game is good so far and the setting it's all the records for me. Does the demo have see progression towards the full game?

Yep, your save will carry over!

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Just finished the demo on Steam this morning, after nearly 6 hours of playtime. Can't wait for this to drop!

Steam still won't let me buy the game. Crazy how Falcom apparently doesn't do preorders. Just finished FF16 so I'm all ready to tear into this.

Absolute nuts to me that NISA won’t let us preorder…

Since this is a niche game, maybe they don't want to dilute the sales across several months: in this way the chance to appear in the Steam Top Seller list might be higher and lead to a few more sales.

Bruh! Dis game isn't AAAA and doesn't have mega production values or a trillion dollar budget, so peeps here aren't going to gush about it. Sorry dawg. /gaf

Personally speaking, these kinds of games are where it's at for me, personally. Love 'em.

Highly likely I'm buying this soon. This gives me Ys 8 with some slight Chrono Trigger vibes from what I've played of the demo and has awesome music as the series almost always does.

The demo kept going and going, I was already sold after the two chapters. For me the demo was 7 1/2 hours long. That's actually longer than I played of YS VIII which I actually bought that game. Something about the setting and story is clicking better, maybe it's the more focused cast or that it's an earlier/younger adventure for the main character? Reminds me of Dragon Quest XI S's demo, very very generous. I can tell I'll look forward to each time I get to play this game, something where female and male cooperate haha

Ys VIII takes around 10-15 hours to really get going. It's a bit of a slog at the beginning, but then it gets much better.
If you like focused characters/cast you might like Ys IX quite a bit.

Playing the demo now. Off to a pretty slow start but I'm hoping things pick up.

The PC port is fantastic. Pretty much everything has been considered. Want to support the game because of the port alone.

Picking up my copy from Best Buy at lunch. And got 2 days coming up off from work. Can't wait to dive in. The demo was great.

Got my deluxe edition yesterday for PS5, but I probably won't get to it for a while (I bought early to give maximum support to the devs). Hope everyone enjoys the game!

I dunno if I just need way more time with it or what but the controls bug me. I've tried rebinding a few different ways to no avail which means I'll have to stay on normal difficulty until I can figure something out or just get used to it.

Regardless, I'll be bouncing back and forth between this and Silent Hill 2 over the weekend.

So I had pre-ordered my copy from Amazon way back when, and yesterday got an email saying it wouldn't arrive until Nov 1st! Cancelled, ordered from Best Buy, it's already shipped and will be here today...

I tried so many times to get into Ys. I just don't get it.
Tried Oath in whatever and another old one as well as something Lacrimosa.
They look dreadful. The combat is not fun. Story sucks, although I know that's not their main draw.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I'm curious to see how the PS5/PS5 Pro version stacks up against the PC release - mostly in terms of whether stutter is an issue - but I'm guessing the PC version's the way to go. Won't get to this game for a while, but I'll probably pick it up in the next few days on GOG.

The PC version has an option that allows you to remove the Rim Lighting. If you've played this or seen videos it's the white outline around characters, npcs, and the rest of the environment. I don't like it so I'm glad you can turn it off. You also have a FOV slider.

I can't imagine the PS5 version being as good as the PC version, as the PC version runs nearly flawlessly. Even my humble 3060 runs this at over 100fps in 32:9 ultrawide 1440p.

Also, extra settings and mods make it the ongoing definitive edition.

So far it's a major step-down from Ys 8 and 9.

In the former you start on a lush but strange island with one of the best pieces of adventure music ever (sunshine coastline) and in the latter you start out in this impressively designed gothic castle town that invokes a foreboding mystery...and in this one you start out in Carnac...one of the most uninspired looking and drab towns I've ever seen in a JRPG.

So far I don't like Karja or the switch system with just her either. Definitely would have preferred either Adol by himself like he used to be or more party members.

I'm sure it will pick up, I've never been disappointed in any Ys game I've played, but it's a very drab start so far.

Karja took a few hours to grow on me. My first impressions of her were not good (like yours) but now I think she's a good character.

I'm enjoying the combat in this more than the last few games which were "enemy is blue, use red attacks" that felt like it was only ever designed to get you to swap out Adol for a different character. So far, I've played Adol like 99% of the time, and that's fine.

At the beginning I was thrown off by the fact that guarding cannot be activated mid animation. But the more I play the more it makes sense. This means you have to pay attention to the enemies' animations, as you cannot react on time if you are button mashing. Mind you, the game is still fast paced, but you cannot just button mash your way through (at least on higher difficulties).

Also, weaving between Duo mode and Skill mode is super fun. It takes a bit of time to get used to, but once you get the hang of it the combat becomes addicting. Adol and Karja do not share SP in Skill mode, so swapping between them is necessary if you want to keep a nice flow to the combat (SP regen is much higher for the inactive person).

All in all I'm really liking the combat!

One thing I don't like is the skill progression system. I didn't like it in Ys VIII/IX and I don't like it here. Additional skills are unlocked once a certain skill reaches mastery, which means you might have to use a skill you don't like to unlock a skill you might like. Falcom, just let me use the skills I like...

I am having so much fun with this game. A real palate-cleanser given that Monstrum Nox (Ys IX) was not much to my liking. Looks great and plays like a charm on the Steam Deck.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Playing through the demo to get a save primed up for the full release. Some thoughts:

- Feels more Ys 8 than IX and I'm all for it. Both in terms of art and not as 'broody' as IX.
- Combat, somehow, feels even more button mashier than before, especially with the Duo attack mechanics.
- Cutesy art but very dated technically, I guess the benefit is that it seems like it's running at 4K / locked 60 on the PS5.

I don't see literally any reason to use any of the other skills when the Duo normal attack can make mince meat out of every enemy lol. It also guards successfully against all but the specifically color tagged 'speed' attacks. This is a game breaking ability the game has given me itself in the first half hour.
