Xbox confirms it's banning Baldur's Gate 3 players due to in-game nudity turn on

Banned
Just wondering but does uploading clips of CoD featuring headshots and exploding limbs also ban your account? Or is it just nudity?

Bunch of idiots with double standards. They should've forced Larian to cut the nude content if they're so upset about it, but of course they wouldn't get your money then since people wouldn't buy an inferior censored version.

Does it even say somewhere in the Terms & Conditions that such clips will result in bans or will be 'investigated'..?

You said it was a practice of Sony's under Shawn's leadership and that it barely happens anymore. I gave you a recent example and adamsapple adamsapple gave you other examples. You are wrong. Not sure why you are looking at reddit when you could just read the article from the developer which details the changes made for the console releases.

There have been two specific changes to the game across all platforms. Specifically, the Salvation Ranger introduction and Junior’s flashback have had small alterations made to them. Whether or not to make these changes was not easy to decide, but ultimately it became an exciting prospect to alter some content in a small way in hopes that it welcomes and includes more players.

...

In a similar vein, a few more changes were made on PlayStation only in order to launch the game on that platform, but we're happy to say that none of them affect the meaning and intent of LISA. For the PlayStation version of LISA, we’ve added a notice about the protagonists at the beginning of the game. Additionally, cigarettes have been renamed to ‘cigarette candy,’ Joy is no longer referred to as ‘pills,’ and alcohol has been renamed as ‘soda’ in Joyful only (characters still drink alcohol in Painful). Basically, the changes are not a big deal. We just wanted to make everyone aware of it in advance, because we know that LISA fans will notice it as a difference from the original games.

You not knowing what the game is doesn't invalidate the example. No one said they are an open platform and no one said they can't censor games that appear on their platform. The fact remains that they still censor games often and in the example I listed, are more aggressive in their censorship than other platforms, including Nintendo.

WTF, so they butchered Lisa to re-release it?

Where we are heading is worrying to say the least, I'm not sure the original version of Lisa even gets made (nevermind released) in current-day, which is a great shame.

If they're allowing the game content on their platform then they should be fine with people capturing said content.

This is it in a nutshell for me.

I don't think we are heading anywhere as we are already here. Those additional changes are laughable and it's why I skipped on the re-release. And it's not hard to imagine that there are other games being censored or denied release that we aren't privy to the information.

Some of you guys should try posting your dick pics here on gaf and see what happens.

With that said, I don't agree with the bans due to the autoupload settings. Which I guess also why it appeara they've reversed them?

I wasn't aware that GAF was selling Baldur's Gate III to play on GAF. Will I get achievements?

Is the NeoGAF community really acting shocked and/or outraged over this? You guys know that you can get warned/banned for uploading this kind of stuff to NeoGAF, right? This is a basic principle of video sharing across most non-porn websites. YouTube doesn't allow it. Microsoft doesn't allow it. Sony doesn't allow it. NeoGAF doesn't allow it. And about a billion other websites have the same restriction. This is common sense.

YouTube had no problems with it not sure why you think so. Neither does twitch. Witcher 3 sex scenes from a stream no problems on both sites. Local record of Conan exiles no problems. Both games had full frontal nudity Witcher in cutscenes and Conan whenever you wanted.

I suspect you're smarter than the tone of that response. I don't have all the confident answers, but obviously the point is that TOS and nudity (and vs violence) is a larger overarching discussion about the temperature of society rules which both we, the owners of gaf, and MS has to deal with. And in this specific case there's also a technical contextual element of the autoupload settings to be considered, which may be what MS is actually responsible for. Nuance, context, it's important.. ...Unless you really enjoy a dumbed down discussion of course.

They launch it 3-4 months late because of series S, a month later it still has the problem of saving the game (something very serious), they ban you if you take screenshots, of course Xbox seems like the worst place to enjoy the goty.

Banning because of in game nudity? For fuck sakes lol. We live in a world where videos of limbs being hacked or blown off are fine, but oh no! Don't you dare show off any tits and ass and god forbid someone sees anything below the belt line!!

Get your shit together Xbox, this is the wrong message to send.

Ah yes, America, the land of the free, where gratuitous violence and guns are hailed as the second coming, but show a little boob and ya'll shall burn forever damned in hellfire. Not sure how values got so wonky.
Well those are the values that built America, for better or worse. It kind of makes sense. I'd like to see how a country with a foundation of big natural titties develops.

Modern companies and people with dark ages attitudes, I wonder for how long will it last in our curious times? Nudity was always funny to be censored in the civilized world, considering everyone is nude all the time beneath their clothes, and in many other instances. Somehow, this alienation from our own basic nature seems quite absurd. The only thing it seems good for is that it makes nudity special and more attractive and in some forms even artistic, but I don't believe at all this is the reason for demonization and censorship. Rather, naked, one seems more unrestrained, wild and free, and obviously anally retentive, control bent society cannot stand this.

I just had to use this occasion to bring my opinion around it forward, in other words, both censorship as well as MS can eat shit.

People getting banned by a shadowy pseudo automated organization from socializing with their fellow peers in their chosen way with money earned and spent because of digital tits formally hosted and monetized by said shadowy organization?

Orwell eat your heart out.
Fuck apparantly I ended up on Resetera...... Strange... Thought this was GAF.

Personal use and broadcasting to the world are 2 different things. Oh and read the ToS from Sony, MS, Nintendo etc when it comes to streaming/ broadcasting.

Yeah, you agreed with it. Donut.

That sucks and I feel for Xbox users. Is anything like this happening on PS5? If I livestream this game to youtube with all the nudity visible, will something similar happen to either my stream or my psn account?

Not for this game at least.

To be fair to them, it’s partly our fault (British). We experimented a bit back in the day, exporting our most puritanical nutters over to the new world, and all our criminals to Australia.

How do you ban people for something in a game that is ok to carry on your platform? The nudity apparently wasn’t a problem to allow it it on your console, but you’re going to punish players for using video from something within the game? That’s pathetic.
The only way it would be similar is if NeoGAF were banning users for posting nudity, while having a nudity thread where it's freely posted.

Not really. Completely false equivalence.

Just because you make a certain type of content available doesn't mean that all of it should be OK to share publicly using your services. Example, you rent a R rated movie from Blockbuster. Therefore, it's implied that any frame of that movie is appropriate to post on a sign outside Blockbuster. They made it available! That's completely laughable, yet exactly what everyone is saying in this case. In one case it's an adult customer seeking out this content, and in the other, sharing it in a public space where anyone can stumble upon it.

The big conflict comes in when this policy, which is frankly understandable from a game company, is paired with auto-uploading. It should be turned off by default, but this is MS's self interest for both its reputation, and free publicity from user generated videos, clashing and leaving customers paying for it. What really makes this bullshit, is that they probably won't turn auto upload off even after this.

Will they get banned again next time is the question… 🤔

The only reason this is BS is because you wouldn't think they would make it that easy to get banned with default settings and not even think of it. If you already got banned for this once though you have no excuse not to turn auto upload off lol.

You're giving it too much credit, most companies out-source content moderation to cheap labor in countries like India where they have to moderate (up to) 2000 photos per hour or such.

This is a good watch, if you've got 20 minutes to spare.

edit: there's some nudity in the video, so may be NSFW.

Talk about Sony and censorship though lol
This isn't censorship, though. This is Microsoft not letting people use cloud storage to save their library of BG3 naked titty pics. Censorship would be not letting BG3 have naked titties at all.

Microsoft should default automatic game capture uploads to off and not automatically share game captures to profiles for M-rated titles. At least make people choose to share it before banning them.

Wrong, this is about them not allowing people to SHARE their titty pics. You can capture them. Sharing them would be the same as posting nudity here.

The dictionary disagrees. This is censorship. If you suppress images, you are censoring.

You don't have to defend Xbox, they have big boy bucks. In this case, I'd defend the censorship using removal and rethinking the auto upload of screenshots shared public ally or do what Steam allows and spoiler certain shots.

You are grossly misconstruing the issue. Microsoft allows video upload/sharing, but they have ToS that state no nudity. Microsoft didn't make Baldur's Gate 3. Larian Studios did. The only way this overly-simplified analogy of yours would work would be if Baldur's Gate 3 were a first-party title.

YouTube had no problems with it not sure why you think so. Neither does twitch. Witcher 3 sex scenes from a stream no problems on both sites. Local record of Conan exiles no problems. Both games had full frontal nudity Witcher in cutscenes and Conan whenever you wanted.

YouTube does have a problem with it, they are just wildly inconsistent with their moderation. You can Google it and see for yourself that many people have had issues with The Witcher 3 content getting taken down, and sometimes the same user will have other content from the same game that doesn't get taken down. YouTube moderation itself is chaotic, and everyone has known that for a long time.

Twitch is essentially a porn site now, so that particular rebuttal means nothing.

Yes.

On the Xbox network, it’s forbidden to share in-game imagery that:

  • Contains nudity or sexual content

That ain't censorship. The game content itself is not censored in any way.

I'm not defending Xbox. You're being pedantic. None of the console platforms allow sharing of nudity or explicit images. Microsoft doesn't prevent people from taking their pictures or clips. But they're not obligated to host or share them, and not allowing it isn't suppression or censorship.

What do you believe censorship is if not the suppression of images? I'm going to trust a book that gives the definition of words over someone that makes a habit of defending Phil Spencer.

Good on you for googling the word :messenger_tears_of_joy:

The content of the game that the gamers are playing is not censored. Their ToS says you cannot upload in-game content with nudity to their servers. These are two completely different things.

Even you, yourself, talk about what you saw 'when i played', not about what you uploaded on social media. You get full orc dong when playing the game on Xbox as well.

No. Full orc dong was present when I played.

Take a breather, chief. You're winded.

You're asking for console fanboys to use common sense and not start hyperbolic posts that are firmly dancing over the line of falsehood?

Then where will all of the new post topics come from?

Right, so you never gave the definition of censorship. I don't need to Google the word because it's not a complex word.

Your definition means that Sony and Nintendo have never censored because their rules for certain products are to not have X and Y objects in games. In a sense breaking the licensing ToS. But we both know that's still censorship and we both know you'll do anything to defend Brand X.

If you take a second to stop googling words and accusing anyone who disagrees with you of being 'defenders', you'll see it's pretty easy.

You, yourself, said that you didn't see any censorship playing the game. People playing the game on Xbox are also not seeing any censorship.

To your second point, developers from multiple games have come out and said how they had to make changes to a games content for it to be certified on playstation (Lisa, Martha is Dead and there's a whole youtube channel devoted to these kind of things), that is not the same thing as uploading an image on social media.

It really shouldn't be this difficult to distinguish between the two scenarios but here you are.

free the tiddy

It's already free (well, after paying $70 for the game). This is screen capture we're talking about, not the game itself. Two different, distinct things. And another poster already provided the ToS that show uploading the free tiddy is a no-no.

So, again. Why is uploading on by default if there can be consequences like this?

3rd try: what does censorship mean? And again, I don't need to Google a simple word like censorship but apparently you're having an extreme difficult time understanding what that word means.

So define the word or shut up.

I think there's some real fundamental issues of understanding going on here.

You seem to be thinking that there is censorship for people playing BG3 on Xbox.

There is no censorship for the people playing the game.

Why don't you define how the game is censored on Xbox so I can try to understand where you're coming from.

Are XBOX uploads visible by anyone, or just by those you share with? Even if they are visible to anyone, should age gate content and not ban people. If moderators have to view things and see if its an offense, they should just block the content and notify the user. This is bad practice.
