What innovations do you expect from Nintendo this coming generation?

At this point they really don't have to do much for Switch 2 but upgrades but this is Nintendo & innovation has been a big part of their success in the handheld market & their most successful home consoles Wii & Switch. So I expect something that will set them apart.

I am hoping for a docking station that upgrades the system when docked. I am expecting the rumored magnetic joy-cons is what we will get for innovation. The Switch was good enough that I do not expect them to change much.

I have a feeling that they will double down on innovations of things like this.

They should change nothing but the performance capabilities of the next machine. And use better thumb sticks. No new gimmicks. Do you hear me Miyamoto? Don't mess it up.

Nintendo has some recent patents for a kind of pressure sensitive analog sticks (one of those is also using capacitive sensor, which could also make it "drift proof")

Other than that, I'm not expecting any real innovation. But I do hope for an evolution of their motion controls. They could use a camera and IR LEDs to make it like a VR controller, going from 3DoF to 6DoF. Like I said, not an innovation but an evolution of what they already offer (and a technology that is the base of modern VR headsets). They could even do body tracking at the same time they would track the IR LEDs, fusing both data for a much better input. With the Tensor Cores, and thanks to the advancement of computer vision and machine learning, it wouldn't be that hard come up with a very good trained model. Nvidia could even help them.

I just wish they would release a small console with the hardware. I had no use for the screen, joy cons, since I used my switch permanently docked using a switch pro controller. Feels like I’m paying for shit I’m not going to use.
You want a Non-switchable Switch? Lol funny but I get it , something like when PlayStation turned Vita into PlayStation TV .

If there were any innovations they would have been leaked or teased (a la "The Revolution") by now. Seems pretty clear they're just straight up releasing a Switch Pro as a fake Switch 2 and will regurgitate the same franchises for the next decade. You'll all enjoy your 600:1 CR 70% SRGB LCD that's worse than your Grandma's Tracfone from Wallgreens, then you'll spend another $400 on a Switch 2 OLED in 3 years.

And Nintendo is that company that would make body tracking work

Nintendo make some of the best games in the industry but i wish they'd do two things next gen that have nothing to do with innovations.

1: Stop half assing alot of the games they release such as the mario sports games where they release with bare bones content that nintendo expands on later with 'free updates' but the games end up feeling barebones even after said updates. They did the same thing with animal crossing as well where it released barebones, and nintendo switch sports which is completely barebones.

2: Start getting with the times graphically if you wanna charge full price for your games. I'm not a graphics whore 'i'm a falcom fan and spike chunsoft fan and they don't focus on graphics' but some of the games they release look like crap on a 4k screen. Mario & luigi the brothership looks like a 3ds game and runs like crap too boot and that's unacceptable for a huge corporation like nintendo to release crap that looks and runs like that. There's certain graphical standards and performance standards that nintendo needs to start hitting because they have both the manpower and funds to do it and just choose not too. You can make great games while having them run and look good as well.

P.S still excited for the switch 2 though lolll.

I'd sign up for this. As much as I love the Switch of the thousands upon thousands of hours I've spent with it, I'd guess less than five hours were in portable mode.

I love my Vita TV too.

They should commission Clap Hanz to do Mario Golf and Mario Tennis. Even with the content added post launch, Nintendo's sports games on Switch are subpar.

I’d love to see Hall effect analog sticks. I’m hoping the forced refunds of the JoyCons this gen made them reevaluate its worth.

Doing something interesting with the dock could also be neat.

That’s more hopes than expectations though. What I’d expect is for them to slap a cheap camera on it and release some weird AR game or something.

You own a PlayStation TV?

I wonder if they will try to sell a Portal TV or a Portal DualSense with a projector built in

I love this thing. All consoles should be the size of a playing card. It would be great if instead of a Switch Lite they would release something like this instead this time around. Perhaps they will actually do this for the original Switch and reduce the price greatly.

I wonder if Nintendo was caught like a Deer in the headlights with this glut of handhelds, but they were too entrenched in the new hardware already to really do anything about it. Just curious if they are confident about the next Switch or if they are sweating a bit?

It will be interesting to see what they do for a Switch 3, only because in addition to all these handhelds, Microsoft and Sony might enter the fray as well. Of course, first party is absolutely strong, but will it be enough?

Sony is crazy for not putting out a soft client PS Portal with no screen.

You could probably sell it for like 50 dollars. Just an android box with an HDMI, WiFi, Bluetooth, and a USB port for an ethernet adapter sold separately, kiosked to run the same shell as the Portal.

I don’t want innovation in hardware, but software. Sick of the gimmicks just be creative with gameplay. I would rather a simple system with a virtual console & ability to connect any bluetooth controller, bluetooth headphones/earbuds, and BC slot for cartridges from previous Switch.

Furukawa have already stated how they are concerned about the transition:

Furukawa interview in 2022 said:
Unlike the past, we continue to have a large variety of games scheduled to be released, even beyond five years of release. This is because the Nintendo Switch has had such a smooth launch, allowing us to focus all of our development resources on a single platform.

However, the question of whether we will be able to just as smoothly transition from the Nintendo Switch to the next generation of hardware is a major concern for us. Based on our experiences with the Wii, Nintendo DS, and other hardware, it is very clear that one of the major obstacles is how to easily transition from one hardware to the next.

To help alleviate this risk, we’re focusing on building long-term relationships with our customers. While we will continue launching new software on the Nintendo Switch, we will also provide services that also use Nintendo Accounts and other IP outside of gaming software. We intend for this to help build a lasting impact with our customers.

We know that having BC is certainly going to help too.

But if the rumors are legit, and they are coming with 6kk+ consoles for the launch month, then they are definitely confident about it. They must have some amazing titles planned for 2025/26.

The nice thing about the Vita TV bombing was that they could be had for $49.00 shortly after they launched. I still fire mine up from time to time to play Open Tee 1 & 2.
This is basically what I want from Switch 2 but more powerful and Apple tv form.

I wouldn't call it "innovation", but a switch model with at least e-sim functionality seems like a no brainer to me. The japanese were playing Monster Hunter on the PSP online on their trains like 20 years ago already (albeit through wifi iirc). I don't know how popular this would be (especially at first), but it's not like this would be some huge undertaking.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Probably gonna play it safe like DS -> 3DS, Switch -> Switch 2 or whatever they call it. I suppose maybe it will do more AR stuff (like that physical Mario Kart remote controlled toy/game) but nothing you haven't seen on mobile phones (still, more affordable than some flagship models for sure).

Would be nice if the joycons have some sort of accurate motion tracking tech bringing back Wii-like controls (but more like current VR controls in scheme/setup) and hopefully accurate enough to enable lightgun style games to work properly this time, not like on an actual Wii with its limitations.

Seems like majority of posters here have no idea what the word "innovation" means

BC?
Home console with proper controller?
Bigger battery?
OLED?

Really?

Only post with some sort of innovative feature is the Gameboy printer 😅
