Ubisoft is no longer attending this year’s physical E3 event, VGC understands.

Last month the Assassin’s Creed publisher became the first major company to publicly commit to attending the revamped E3, which is due to take place in June at its traditional venue of the Los Angeles Convention Center.

However, in a statement issued to VGC, the company said it has now decided to “move in a different direction” and will instead be holding its own Ubisoft Forward Live event on June 12 in Los Angeles.

“E3 has fostered unforgettable moments across the industry throughout the years,” a spokesperson told VGC.

“While we initially intended to have an official E3 presence, we’ve made the subsequent decision to move in a different direction, and will be holding a Ubisoft Forward Live event on 12th June in Los Angeles. We look forward to sharing more details with our players very soon.”

E3 organiser ReedPop did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

So I’m guessing they committed and expected others to follow. When that didn’t happen they changed their mind?

They need to make it a spectacle again to have any hope of saving it. I'd suggest working out licensing deals with EA and 2k to have "current version" "year end" tournaments in 2k, Madden and Fifa. Maybe have celeb / athletes in a side tournament too. Get Fortnite mixed in or other shooters too. That alone would get big attention from the younger crowds. And end the restrictions on attire.

Spectacle, competition and sex appeal sells. Sanitized shows for everyone end up being shows for no one. There's no hook in watching YouTube videos on a special day in June. None.

E3 is looking pretty bleak.

On the upside things are looking very positive for the Xbox ABK Acquisition so they can have their own E3 with Zenimax/Bethesda Softworks, Activision/Blizzard/King, Mojang and of course Xbox over at the Microsoft Theater on the Microsoft Plaza.

Ubisoft always seems eager to support any event or service where they can push their games. You can probably make a gaming subscription service that's exclusive to smart fridge screens and they'd bring every Assasins Creed and Far Cry to it.

If even they are passing on this then it's as good as dead.
