Ubisoft has disbanded the team behind Prince of Persia The Lost Crown. Game did not reach expectations and sequel was refused.

This comes from the reliable french game journalist "Gautoz" who heard from multiple devs at Ubisoft Montpellier the news.

Internally, the fate of the game was already decided a few weeks after the release of the game, it was clear in Spring that after releasing a few DLCs and Cosmetics it would be the end.

A few members of the core dev team fought to get a sequel greenlit which did not happen, then they pushed for two expansions hoping that it would work this time but it didn't since Ubisoft needed more hands to help on other projects that had a better sales potential which wasn't the case with Lost Crown not meeting sales expectations.

Another crazy justification that the dev team received from higher-ups was that releasing a sequel for the game would cannibalize long term sales of the first game.

PS3 quality graphics didnt help. If you are going to make a 2D game in 2023, and charge $50 for it, it cant look worse than most indie games.

Also, try and make 2D games more interesting. there is a reason why they died out. People found more freedom in 3D games. You can still make one but it has to be industry leading with new innovative mechanics and gameplay not possible in 3D games. Making a simple 2d sidescroller with awful graphics is not going to sell. especially at $50.

Put in more effort next time.

The future for Ubisoft is bleak. They used to be so good too.

- Rayman Legends / Origins
- Splinter Cell
- The Division
- Ass Creed 2 trilogy

Sad what they are now.
They were probably my favourite publisher in the OG Xbox generation. Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six were some of the most interesting multiplayer experiences around and by far my most played franchises of the time.

They are absolutely awful now. It's fucking annoying really since they sit on some great IPs. Piss poor management and an even worse leadership team.

Ubisoft's reputation is so bad, that even when they release a good game, people ignore it, because they expect it to be crap.

It also didn't help that it was released on Steam, more than half a year later.
And to make things even worse, it has denuvo and the Ubisoft app. I don't want to deal with this crap, if I buying a game on Steam.

One of the best games Ubisoft had ever put in this decade and of course they disband the team and cancel the sequel. Actually insane, Ubisoft is truly at this point a bloat in this industry. I generally like Ubi games, I do enjoy Far Cry and AC games they put out but holy it's hard to defend them as their stupidity, mismanagement and scummy practices are reaching levels that make me speechless. They have no player connection, PR is absolutely in shambles, Ubi gives zero fucks to everything apart from shareholders and increasing profit.

Unfortunate and infuriating, shame that good devs and games have to be mercilessly slaughtered again and again by Ubisoft, which in a few years' time will be a graveyard of mediocrity and bitterness.

Ubisoft reminds me of a classic quote I heard from an economist, "Ubisoft consistently disappoints the optimists and the pessimists".

All of this is perfectly describes me. At this point just seeing that a game is coming from Ubisoft is enough to make me not care regardless of anything else.

Full blown retards.

Best ubi game since initial R6 Siege rework on launch to fix issues.

I wanted a proper Prince of Persia game so I was turned off this, the aesthetics were wrong and it looked incredibly unambitious.

The AAA pricing for consumers, but with arguably sub-AA ambitions is unacceptable from a company and team that could have aimed much higher.

It's irrelevant if it's competent for what it is when it's the leading title for one of their most important IP, but Ubisoft and squandering / humiliating their IP is the soup of the decade I guess.

I think a lot of people see these side scrolling indie-ish looking games and are willing to only spend up to $20 on it at launch. Some will even wait til cheaper or on a subscription service.
I think game publishers could learn a few things studying human behavior and adjusting accordingly.

What expectations did it not meet? Being a good game? Sales? I'm not sure they look at sales anymore as they have their own rental service so why would sales be a consideration here? Either way it's a damn shame as this was a pretty damn good game in the Metroidvania style.

I paid for it on sale and got up to Darius and had done most of the exploration tasks like the urns and chests but I didn't really like the story at any point especially when it turned out we were fighting the older of Darius' kids who would have been the rightful heir, when you get good at it, some of the items require a lot of skill to get them but the overall gameplay never grabbed me like it did for others. The bonus challenges are all way too long to be fun to learn.

Good. I am happy they are going down. Any company that continue the same wokness and LGPTQ crap being forced into gaming will lose business and staff gets fired .

We don’t need this in gaming and it’s already showing . So good riddance

Sad the game was decent. But when you have a company with shitty and force this shit on us, normal gamers will fight back. And the results are people telling Ubisoft to fuck u and ur game. Even if it’s actually good.

Good bye Ubicrap

I'm not interested in the game myself as I rarely play metroidvanias, but reading about it I have zero faith that Splinter Cell Remake will be finished. The potential for great sales is even smaller than with PoP since stealth oriented games have become quite niche.

(and if they plan on butchering the core and the gameplay of SC they may as well cancel it as well)

Terrible game as Prince of Persia. They tried to swap the lead character with over-powered tiktok gen dude, dumpstered the entire canon and go in a ridiculous direction. These bad results are not a surprise.

Now go back to original, spend that resources for SoT Remake and make a great modern game, dumbos.

I think people will pay $30 for a quality metroidvania no problem, and Bloodstained did well at $40. It’s true that $50 may be pushing it though, unless you have someone like Igarashi behind the wheel or a Metroid.

Before some of you celebrate, this isn’t good news guys.

That team was one of the Rayman teams.

Honesty, they should have made Rayman instead. This was not the Prince of Persia game most people wanted.

Art direction, Ubisoft's reputation, price, brand identity, and storefront exclusively all combined to kneecap the game right from the start. It never had a chance.

Incredible game, nearly 100%ed it and then can jump on the DLC. Sad it didn't sell well.

What does any of this have to do with Lost Crown?

BINGO. Luckily for us sub services aren't doing damage to the games industry...

For me it's the wishlist and steam sales that kills Day 1 game sales for games I'm not 100% sold on.
I probably would have bought this for $20 at launch, now I'll probably wait til I see it $10 or less on steam.
Game Pass definitely trained many to just play what's on the sub.

Terribly mismanaged game.
If they had priced it according to what the market is willing to pay for these types of games and gave it a non hideous art style it probably would have done decently.

Nintendo with Metroid is about the only company that can get away charging more than $30 for a Metroidvania, and even they would probably struggle if they show up with a trailer for a new Metroid featuring ugly Fortnite visuals with a new main character that no one wants and rap music.

IMO it was a good game, but not a good PoP game. The art direction was terrible, you can't charge 50 USD for that, it's simple. I want to believe that there's demand for a proper PoP based on parkour and traps with an interesting map and story but they need to produce something better. This can't compare to The Warrior Within.
