The remake of the 1997 classic Riven is officially launching later this year. This modern facelift of the acclaimed sequel to Myst is also coming to VR.

Developed by Cyan Worlds, a team led by the masterminds of the original game, Riven is being remade from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5. First announced in 2022, the game is promised to be a faithful homage that leverages modern tech to allow for immersive visuals, free movement, expanded storytelling, and new puzzles. Check out its latest teaser trailer below.

Riven: The Sequel to Myst was first released in 1997 and has been hailed as a PC classic of the era. It's so beloved that an existing fan-driven remake, The Starry Expanse Project, was already in the works when Cyan Worlds announced this remake. Recognizing their efforts, Cyan Worlds worked with The Starry Expanse to incorporate their efforts into this official remake.

Outside of PC, it's unclear which platforms, VR or otherwise, Riven will target.

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
Wow almost no attention to classic game like this.

The Myst series has always been pretty great if you are into that sort of thing. I've been a fan of interactive fiction since the Commodore Vic-20 days.

Myst IV it's probably my favorite in the series. The game was absolutely beautiful aside from the corny song.

Myst and Riven were great.....back in the 90's.....but games have surpassed that style of game decades ago. I bought Myst at release and was amazing due to gamers never seeing games look that realistic. It was a slideshow basically, and even with a fully 3D world, the gameplay is full of obscure puzzles.

There is a short demo available on Steam during the Steam Next Fest.
It's short and only lets you visit the starting isle. I'ts Riven you can walk around in! I've wanted this for years.

The visuals are great and you can shimmy through some nooks and see stuff you couldn't see in the original (also they made quite a few changes to the locations you could visit in the original) -- like in the area around the maglev.

The most annoying aspect, other than the off looking 3d people models and animations, is the page turning animation in the book(s). What on earth is that. Let's make reading long books a glitchy experience? I hope they change (or fix?) it for the final game.

Also hoping Catherine's journal is readable this time around, because oh boy that was not fun times in the original version.
