I didn't notice any screen tearing (PS3) >_>;

Man I wish I could re-live the first time I played this game and kept discovering it thru World Tour mode...I haven't felt like this in a video game since Rayman Origins last year (which is my GotY 2011).

These guys voting are going to be so disappointed when the dlc ends up being Billy Hatcher and the Chu Chus.

On that note, I went through the Ice Castle stage in time trial slowly and I didn't see Billy anywhere, just Rolly, Bantam and Chick. Seems like he's more or less inevitable as DLC.

It's okay if you don't get every achievement.

If I'm unable to get every achievement in a game because some are too difficult, that's OK. If I'm unable to get every achievement in a game because they're poorly conceived, then no, that's not OK.

I don't care about my overall gamerscore; I only try and get all the achievements in games I genuinely enjoy. As that's what achievements are supposed to be; additional goals to pursue to extend the life of a game.

I know at least two people who would play this game with me, and would probably have no difficulty beating the A.I. on Easy, so I just need one more person, which I can probably find. But the fact remains that it's poorly thought out, as there are a lot of other people who won't be able to get it. If it was simply "play a 4-player local multiplayer game", then that wouldn't be so bad.

Update on some character numbers:

Miku: 1067
Segata Sabshiro: 723
Vectorman: 499
Ryo: 450
Ristar: 411
Bayonetta: 359
ToeJam and Earl: 298
Blaz Fielding: 171
Axel Stone: 163
Selvaria: 134

Are you really going to let Ristar beat Bayonetta, GAF?

I heard that S0L has already given a reason why Ristar wasn't in the game (you lose all sense of familiarity when seeing him from behind 99% of the time). And since he's now the flagman, putting him in as a playable racer means they have to also go out of their way to add a new flagman. No matter how many votes Ristar gets, I don't see him making it in.

I think a better question is why Vectorman, a bunch of shapes from a game that was nothing special, is beating Ryo.

Yeah, I noticed that too, and came to the same conclusion. To be honest, I'm happy with that, as I'd happily welcome any further DLC beyond what we already know is on the disc, and this makes that pretty damn likely. Although I'd love to see Ryo and Segata Sanshiro most of all, I'd still buy Billy Hatcher (and the Chu Chus).

lol @ Miku. Glad to see the real SEGA fans are stepping up and repping the greatest SEGA character of all time.

Oh and notice how Adam isn't in the poll, poor guy'll forever be stuck in Streets of Rage 1.

Hello,

A quick update for those folk having trouble with Boost Challenge and Ninja Tag on Wii U.

We're currently investigating this with SEGA, looks like there was a problem with the update that went live on Sunday.

We're getting this sorted ASAP and we'll give you an ETA once we've got one.

Massive apologies from us on this, we're not sure exactly how it happened but we're doing everything we can do get it sorted out. You guys did give me a head start by posting here, when I saw it last night I fired instructions to the team to look at it first thing today...!

They added Joe Sketcher from Comix Zone. ALL OF YOU, SIGN IT. I wan't comix zone 2 for the 3DS.

Edit: Regarding Miku: If Segata makes it in, i'll let it slide. I'll let every other character slide, so long as i can guide Segata to victory.

Some of these characters (like Miku) might not even make it in even if they get the votes and I think they've also said they'd prefer characters that haven't been in the first game yet.
So just vote for the actually good characters and hope for the best.

Nice to see Segata getting a lot of support though.

You mean Sketch Turner? Already voted for him. :p

Comix Zone seems does seem like an IP that's very suitable to SEGA's new digital focus.

So would it be ok to play the single player without being connected to the internet, and update the game once you have it sorted out? That won't mess up my save or anything? Obviously I can't play online against people till I finish the single player if I do this, but oh well :(

As far as I'm aware you won't need to actually do any of the boost challenges for a while until it blocks you from unlocking more events in world tour. Unless it's different in the Wii U version.

Why the hell does Vectorman have so many votes? Is it just because he lends himself so well to the transformation stuff? He never felt like an iconic or even memorable Sega character.

He had been mentioned in interviews and the like early on, but they either couldn't secure the rights for him or just dropped the idea. I guess all the support now is based on that.

I want to thank this thread for making me aware this game might actually be pretty good. I picked it up yesterday and had some real fun with it.

I've put in a good few hours now and cleared half the world tour, I'm really fucking loving this game, Blur and SASASR were my favourite racing games this gen and this combines them perfectly. I'm surprised the Blur influence was so big though, I thought they only had a couple of guys from Bizarre creations, really glad to see that spirit live on in any case.

I'm in love with the Skies of Arcadia track, I was expecting to like it anyway for the fanservice but it's honestly a great track, chaining the boosts together over a bunch of jumps and turns with drifts and stunts just feels so good. Seriously great track design, one of my favourites since Desert in Sega Rally.

It's quite tough by today's standards. But I like it. The game fucks you constantly on the unlockable fourth Extreme difficulty, but you still keep coming back, it's just too good. :)

I'm all for difficulty in games but for an Essentially a Kart Racer normal is tooo hard and easy is too easy. It actively hinders my enjoyment anytime I find online easier than normal in single player it's a problem. I'm wondering if there are some techniques I'm not using that would help me. And yes I am drifting and boosting.

Drift boost more, trick boost more, don't hold onto items unless you think you can actually use it within the next 10 seconds. If you're not launching items behind you after not using it for 3 seconds, you're doing it wrong.

Well, I finally own my most anticipated game since 2011. I'm hoping I'll enjoy it as there has not been a single game I've cared about this entire year besides this one.

Drat! Drat! and Double Drat!
Insult to injury is that Welkin and the Bonanza Bros aren't even on this list due to lesser voter turnouts, i'm filled with tremendous disappointment.

You need a Haunter in your life to return that laughter and joy you've seemingly lost.

But all things considered you should very much enjoy this.

Yes, you can. We also have a hidden system in the game where iif you fail any given event three times, it offers to let you skip it, gives you a star and lets you move on. Either way will let you continue.

That's the secret though, it's an arcade racer in kart racer's clothing. If you're used to drifting all over the place, drop that fast. Don't be afraid to pull off the accelerator, it's more or less mandatory to keep from smashing into the walls on the later tracks.

Apologies if this has been answered before, but can anyone with the WiiU version tell me if the online mode supports more than one player per machine at one time? Me and my brother had a blast with Mario Kart Wii's online and it would be great if we could both jump online with this too. And also if in a two player race that one person can use the Gamepad for their main view and the other can have the TV all to themselves? Will more than likely get this on the 30th anyway but these additions would be the icing on the cake. :D

Don't worry; you'll enjoy it. I was in exactly the same boat as you. This was my most anticipated game from the very moment it was announced, and it doesn't disappoint at all.

You can have up to 4 people local play online at a time and yes, there is a TV/gamepad split mode, but keep in mind, the frame rate will dip more often when doing so.

I'm at work now so I can't try this until tonight, but when exactly do you do this? When the overhead map shows up on the gamepad, I just swipe down on the screen? I have never seen a prompt or anything. I'm not ordinarily an idiot, I swear!

Sorry a bit late on this one. At pretty much any time just swipe down on your game pad and the game should switch screens (sometimes its a bit finnicky so keep trying if it doesn't)

Please tell me there is a cheap ass way to actually beat these Expert difficulty challenges? Shit is driving me suicidal.

So here are my initial thoughts on the game after playing for a few hours.

Visually, the game seems a lot... blurier to me than the first. The first game was nice and sharp and the picture looked really good. This game not so much. (Playing the Wii U version now, played the 360 version of the first game if anyone is curious.)

The track design is really cool and I love the way it can change dynamically between laps. I like that it's much more varied than the first game's 3 tracks per theme. However, actually RACING on these tracks does not feel as good as the first game to me. I don't like how long it takes to hit a level three boost and I'm still not great with the flying sections.

Also, I have no idea why Sumo completely redid the items in this game.

A. Why not embrace the SEGA stuff? I've read interviews where they've said they make sure they don't add it, which can be seen even further in this game by removing the speed shoes and Sonic shields.

B. You shouldn't make people relearn items between games in the same series. In Mario Kart you know what a green shell does and a star and a banana peel and whatever because they're there every game. Now it's like, "Okay, the boxing glove is now a firework and uh... what is this fish? Oh, it's like a mine. Sort of. Some arrows? That's boost now?"

I'm not hating it but I'm not liking it as much as the first. And of course World Tour mode is no fun right now because of the boost gate glitch.

Nope. Prepare to bash your head against that wall.

They can be done though.

On races? Abuse air drift if possible. On everything else? Throw controller at wall.

for anyone who hasn't seen, even Gareth Wilson himself has trouble with the expert mode challenges, so don't feel bad if you can't get them right away! XD

Gareth Wilson said:
This is different because we’re trying to do this dual audience because we want to capture the kids, but we also want to capture these hardcore SEGA fans who probably the geekiest of geeks. So you get this weird dichotomy of design, which is fine, it’s ok. What we’ve really worked hard on is, this is a game that we’ve built for ourselves, we’ve not made it for children. You can play it as a child because you can pop it on Easy, but All-Star difficulty is f**king hard. I’ve tuned it like a Platinum medal in PGR. Even I can’t do it very well, it takes me about seven or eight goes to get it right.

So there’s a broad range of difficulties for different types of gamers. the C Class is for casual gamers who don’t play very much, B Class is for most people, A Class is pushing on to become a little bit harder and All-Star Class is f**king hard. Really, really, really hard.

I want the soundtrack for this game right now. I especially love the Golden Axe remix.

Probably too obscure of a game but I would have loved to have seen Ex-Ranza/Ranger X represented.

If they wanted to make a hard game, then make a hard game. Don't make a cheap game and then pass it off as hard.

Some of the challenges are cheap for sure but S class races aren't. Track knowledge really makes a difference. I was getting creamed on Expert but the next day I was doing a lot better and went on to win every GP in 1st place on expert and then went back to world tour and started winning the s class race/battle/vs events. Avoiding the challenges for now. Except pursuit. That is easy :p

@Het: I personally like that the weapons aren't the same as in the first game, I feel it adds to this game being more than just a sequel that improves on the first game, and makes it stand out on it's own.

Agreed, heck I was doing a Versus challenge and hit an enemy with a Twister...and THEY DIDN'T GET FAZED, fuckthishitthrowscontrolertothemoon.

Also I now need 22 Stars to unlock AGES, wish me luck GAF ;.;

I unlocked AGES yesterday, so it's doable. Keep at it! I'm sitting at 179 stars now and trying to grab one more to get AGES's special mod...

At least, I hope that's AGES's special mod.

I do wish they gave the power-ups a bit of a Sega-flavour. It's a shame how generic they are amongst all the glorious fanservice.

Blowfish and wasps have both been badniks before too, wasted opportunity. Even if they were all Sonic related, it would've been a little better than this.

Hell, Ristar could've been the fireworks too. Maybe Puffy as the blowfish.

This game is awesome...I bought it yesterday for Wii U having done no research.

Love it so far...is this an AM2 developed game?? Feels like it, was just wondering if some of the AM2 guys were responsible for this.

Alright, I've played this for a few hours and this is what I think of the game so far.

Complaints

Drifting

Drifting is harder to do this time, and you have much less control over the vehicle while drifting compared to the last game. It kinda makes the drift challenges harder solely because of that, and because I can't keep the vehicle in place by holding the opposite direction like I could before. Now it seems the more you do that, the more it pushes you the side you don't want, but if you don't do anything you'll end up going to the other side anyways because that's the direction you are drifting in.

Control

This game is a lot more stiff and heavy in comparison to the last game and I can't say I enjoy that. I really enjoyed how the last game was more designed with control over your car than trying to emulate actual cars. The lack of control in comparison is a shame, but it isn't bad or terrible in this game, I just think the last one got that down pat pretty good so it feels like a step down.

AI is too difficult

Keep in mind before I say this that I've played practically every single Kart Racer that you can imagine and more so besides Crash Team Racing. What is cumbersome about the AI in this game is that they just don't let up no matter what, like they are kept in place because the game deems they should stay there. Kart Racers are known for this, but I think they need to tone it down with this one, it makes it hard to try to surpass the immovable first place AIs. I think for most people who are new to this game, this will be the key thing that may or may not break the game.

Item Balance

Items don't have the near perfect balance the last game had. Some weapons like the Firecracker sometimes just feel useless, but then there are items like the Hot Rod which is kind of ridiculous because it gives boost while sending your opponents flying and they lose all their speed with an AoE fire splash. Snowballs aren't as bad as the Hot Rod, but I think they're a bit much too. Now while I say this, I still think this game doesn't have things anywhere near as bad as Mario Kart does, however the last game was better in this regard where it seemed nearly all the items were useful in their own way, but not overpowered.

Options

The last game had it where you could turn off items if you were playing by yourself or for local co-op. This is a let down as well, and I hope the option to toggle them off will be added again.

Positives

Graphics

Graphics are quite a step up, I can see the shaders being put to use more compared to the last game. Metal Sonic looks divine.

Music

Music is fantastic, and the fact that they aren't just the original songs slapped into the game is a big improvement over the last one.

Stages

You've fixed the issue with the stage having the same themes as before and that's definitely refreshing to see as the last game had some rather bland looking levels because of it.
Etc

1. Good choice on picking the Metal Sonic song from Sonic 4 Episode II and Knuckles Sonic Adventure theme for All-Stars.

2. I do kinda like how it feels the characters have a bit more uniqueness this time

3. Think tricks were better in the last game, but I find it is nice they aren't freebies now.

Overall

I would be lying to you if I said I didn't think this is a good game, I certainly think it's fun to play, and it improved a lot of things from the last game, it just failed to improve the most important thing and that was the actual driving mechanic. That to me is a step down in my opinion, however it being a step down in that area doesn't make it a terrible or bad game. I still like this title more than Mario Kart 7, but they should remove the stiff/heavy/lack of control the cars have in comparison to the first entry.

The biggest complaint I see people having with this game is the AI, and although I may be able to put up with it as I am really into Kart Racers, I think it will shun people away who may be trying to get into the series. The AI puts me to shame sometimes, and that's saying something given my experience.

I suggest trying the demo before you purchase, but if you can put up with the AI then you'll have yourself a good game to play.

Does anyone know how to switch views from playing on the wii u gamepad to playing splitscreen during local 2 player matches? My fiancé and I are having the hardest time trying to figure this out. Tried swiping the screen multiple times and in all directions and nothing ever happens.
