Silent Hill 2 is the best remake of all time.

What time is it?
REmake is the GOAT-remake. It will never be dethroned. Released in 2002 and is still a benchmark.

I'm still early on in SH2 remake, but I agree with this as REmake is the only game I'd be comfortable saying that it easily replaces the original. The love the RE2 remake but I think there is still merit to the original. I vastly prefer the RE4 to its' remake.

Cracks me up seeing this about face when a good few of us tried to tell y’all the game was going to be great!
What reason(s) did you have to believe the game would turn out great, given the developer and underwhelmig media that had been shown off prior to release?

It's very subjective of course, so everyone's opinion is fine. Nothing is factual, no matter how hard you want it to be, lol. I definitely feel like SH2R is one of the best, but I also adored the original game so much, so that's where I am. Full blown bias, lmao.

While RE2 remake is amazing from a mechanical/gameplay point of view, there were a ton of things that they decided to omit from the remake, some bafflingly so.

They then dialed that up to 100 for 3 and it ended up being an utter joke.

If I had to rank all the recent remakes we've had then it would go like this:

  1. System Shock
  2. Silent Hill 2
  3. Demons Souls
  4. RE2
  5. Dead Space
  6. RE4
  7. RE3
Honestly, I like this list a lot and think I align with it pretty heavily.

I think remakes are even more interesting when their original titles are decades old. Or if the changes and updates are THAT substantial. System Shock was so awesome to see considering how the original looked. I'm right there with SH2, DS, and RE2. Hell, the RE remake on Gamecube was insane, especially at the time. But I still feel like we're going to see a new remake with the RE engine + over the shoulder gameplay, and when that happens that will be on my list too. I thought RE4 was great, I loved the original, and I loved the remake. But I felt like RE2 getting the third person over the shoulder treatment and more just hit harder. RE4 took what we already knew and loved and improved it. But the core mechanics were already there from the get-go.

I understand that the remake fatigue is pretty real. But special games that are dated deserve it IMO. I feel like a lot of the ones we've gotten are well deserving.

Damn that's some wild praise Kacho Kacho you agree broseph?
It’s easily one of the best remakes. Graphics, sound and gameplay all got huge upgrades while staying faithful to the original. It legitimately feels like you’re playing a modernized PS2 game. You can’t ask for much better. I’d rank it higher than RE2 remake personally, which IMO felt more like a reimagining using RE7 style mechanics.

What I hate about RE2 remake is the stalking enemy....I hate that shit. I just want to explore without feeling on edge all the damn time.

Does SH2 have any of that to the same degree? It really ruined part of RE2 to me.

I think to be considered one of the best remakes of all time, you have to pretty much improve upon the original in every way. The obviously example people keep bringing up is REmake.

I think Silent Hill 2 Remake is pretty much superior to the original in almost every way. I think where people will differ is the cutscenes and voice acting. Sometimes the Remake does it better, and sometimes the Original isn't topped. The only exception would be James, who is portrayed brilliantly in this version, and I don't think there's a moment with James in the Remake that was done better in the Original. Luke Roberts deserves the award for best voice acting.

This isn't to say the original Silent Hill 2 has become obsolete. It's still one of the best games ever made. But I can easily see fans finding the Remake to be their preferred version for years to come.

No stalkers in SH2.

The tyrant stalking you in RE2 was true to the OG. Part of the experience.

Nothing really like that in SH2 when you explore save for one small part.

I always forget about this one, but much like REmake, I prefer it to the original.
Most remakes are hit and miss, more so than people think or what companies seem to think when they make them. There's only a handful that are like total unambiguous upgrades and it's like REmake, Metroid ZM, and....

Nah, RE2, RE4 and Demon Souls are still top 3.
RE2 felt rushed towards the end. Complete 180 from the rest of the game. And the water in RE4 is the worst shit I've seen in a long while. I have no idea how you can fuck something like this up this badly in a remake.

I agree, felt very cheap. It build up the tension, which is fine for a first playthrough, but the moment I've got infinite ammo he better stay dead.

You could actually stop the tyrant and loot his ass in the OG.

I'd argue that Mr. X was the best part of RE2 Remake for your first playthrough. I phrased that specifically because in subsequent playthroughs he's obviously less scary and it becomes annoying. In fact you pretty much discover that he actually doesn't completely move around at random, and there are event triggers in the game where if you start progressing, he'll spawn closer to the player and zone in on them.

That being said he's still one of the most effective enemies in the entire series imo, because of that first playthrough. Before RE2 Remake, stalker enemies only spawned in certain sections of the game, and once you move to another room, they're gone. Mr. X on the other hand broke the rules, and never went away. He was constantly looking for you. The sounds of his heavy footsteps in a room directly above you were terrifying to hear. I remember at the time I was thinking Mr. X was the prototype for how they were going to handle Nemesis in the eventual RE3 Remake.

It's up there with the Resident Evil 1 and 4 remake and Mario RPG remake. I like the FF7 remake, but the 3 I listed where examples of it done 100 percent right. I am playing the Alone in the Dark remake at this moment, and it is nice as well.

Resident Evil 3 Remake is the peak for me. It took the good mechanics from the original, revamped the pestering stalker to improve pacing, and streamlined the levels to never overstay their welcome or make backtracking a nuisance. To make Silent Hill 2 Remake better than the original they would have had to abridge the underground segments or remove them entirely. Instead they expanded them...

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
So far so good, still not happy with Maria though.

this is my favorite horror game but i am sure that the rumored resident evil 1 remake of REmake will take that spot
If done well, top graphics and maintaining every single room and scenes from the original (or REmake)... Then it's a total win.

Haven't played the recent remakes of 2, 3 and 4 but being Capcom I guess they won't make the Jill and Rebecca looking like David Duchovny and Kyle Mclachlan.

I've never played SH2, only a demo? Atmosphere was quite intense.

However, I've seen some gameplay and reviews of the remake. Am I missing something and does this game feature worlds and areas that are never shown due to them being spoilers?

Because everything I've seen is some dude smashing weird monsters with a wooden plank - inside an apartment or outside in foggy areas.

If it all gets more insane like f.e. Control did, I might be interested in checking SH2 out. I loved RE2 Remake btw.

Silent Hill is a layered and deep psychological horror. It’s crazy but not ‘crazy’. Think Jacob’s Ladder. Tonally it’s the complete opposite of Resident Evil (and so much better). Control was very pedestrian. As someone that follows SCP stuff it was excruciatingly unimaginative, but that’s just me.

We're talking remakes people, not how well regarded these games are. Demon's Souls isn't even in the running. It's way closer to a remaster with nothing changed besides graphics. Same with RE1. It's possible that Capcom is making an actual remake of RE1. Until then, it also is just a remaster.

This is the only answer. Most "remakes" simply retouched modern visuals, some with extra content. The closest thing to REmake is FF7, IF it wasn't split into 3 different games.

REmake truly embodies this term to the absolute purity. It reimagines everything from the start. Changed the entire mansion while making it feel familiar, a new crimson zombie (which has never been dethroned as the scariest enemy in the entire series), a more atmospheric environment, full 3D model render for consistency. There was nothing that was removed, for the sake of "modernity", instead they dialled everything up to 11 plus a tie in with RE3's Nemesis program. THAT, was brilliant. It retold the story without being disingenuous about the delivery.

For REmake, you aren't just playing Resident Evil, you are playing it as if it was the first time despite fans being familiar with the original.
You never lose the distinction between both games, it never tries to outdo or "fix" the original game. It was a love letter to the OG in every single way. It's why I have no problem going back to playing it even with the REmake being absolutely superior in every conceivable way.

And this OP is telling us that SH2 remake can top this? 😆😆 Come on now. So, I haven't played the remake but did they keep that "scene" in the game. You know the one where the Pyramid Head did the... You know.. thing?

Ah, now I see we’re moving the goalposts on what’s a remake and what’s a remaster.

“OMG, Eddie is eating strawberry ice cream in a theater instead of pizza in a bowling alley!”

“OMG, I can break glass to get health and ammo!”

i think the Remake is excellent but far from being the best. I would even go as far and say that the original is still better.

I don’t think they did the pacing a favour by stretching the known locations/riddles. Not through yet (now at the hospital) but I found myself a bit bored here and there.

Also, while the new VA is great all the characters looks very strange. Like their heads are too big. Can’t point my finger on it.

Why are people like that? A good game releases and someone has to demand GOTY, GOTG, GOAT, BEST GAME EVAAA.
There are many good remakes and i bet everybody has his own favorites.

Mine are The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Shadow of the Colossus and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 - Remastered

Shadow of the Colossus?! That’s just a remaster because it doesn’t have breakable glass windows that hold heath and ammo, nor does it have a fat, disgusting teenager that is made to be even fatter and more disgusting in the updated version.

Come on, man…there are rules here.
