Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart peaks at less than 9k concurrent players on Steam, third worst PC launch for PlayStation game

Release a bad port and get low sales, shocker. The brand has become synonymous with PC issues at launch so it's not surprising that the audience is wary of new* releases.

Good. Learn to stop releasing sub par ports with full price.

What, Returnal bombed? That game looked great and seemed like a good fit fot the PC audience. Was it the difficulty turning people off?

I'm sad now.

The difficulty in missing the targets with that pathetic giant hit boxes with aim assist (bullet magnetism)...

It’s a great port too and benefits so much from m+kb controls. I’m surprised this flopped but Sony also doesn’t market these releases at all. They announced it at the pre show for TGA and then just dropped it on Steam a few weeks later.

Also, those Returnal numbers hurt my soul. The game is a fucking blast and one of the best new Sony IPs in years. Is it because the protagonist is a middle-age not-so-attractive white woman?
Steam has like a dozen or more rogue-like/lites releasing every month and for much cheaper. Need something to really stand out. The middle age not so attractive white woman probably didn't help.

Edit: I've actually been interested in buying the game for a while but never did because of the price. Decided to check out the store page again to look at the trailer/screenshots. It looks fine but nothing really grabs me enough to overcome the price tag. It looks like a fairly typical sci-fi shooter with the bullet hell sequence in the trailer being the only thing that made me say "ooh, cool".

PlayStation gamers live in a bubble where their games are all must haves.

On PC there’s simply better options for that $60.

I’m not touching Ratchet until it’s $30 or less. It’s the same exact game I’ve played the last three generations. For $60 I’d buy Remnant 2 or Baldur’s Gate 3 over it.

it's a silly kids game with mediocre rtx. PS5 players minds were blown but on PC it is a junk game. £50 for this? lol no thanks. let me know when it's <£10.
I beat it in a couple playthroughs and took advantage of GameStop's guaranteed program and got my 70 dollars back, you're doing the right thing. It's a launch game through and through

Many who bought it are probably PS2/PS3 era console owners that bought it for nostalgia sake.

This seems like a bad year to release a 2 years old port for nearly full price.
If you've got $50-60 to spend on games do you want to buy one of the highlights of the year so far (Hogwarts, RE4R, Jedi, Diablo, etc), one of the exciting games releasing in the next few weeks (Armored Core, Baldur's Gate, etc) or a 2 years old playstation game?

Maybe you can find success with this if you are releasing a really big and well known title like God of War. But not wit Ratchet and Clank.

Why are people claiming for exclusive what do it change for ps console owner if we get the same games???

PC has long been the superior platform with better visuals, better performance, more and cheaper games, more customization, mods, emulators, better ray tracing, better upscaling tech, etc.
The one argument console players have long used to defend their system is "exclusives". So now that those are also coming to PC they feel like it devalues their console.

And I say that as someone who still primarily plays on console, but the main reason to own one these days is a lower price of entry and a still somewhat superior "plug and play" experience.

It's a 3d Platformer on PC. Comparing it to other titles in the same genre:

Sonic Frontiers - 19,181
Racthet & Clank Rift Apart - 8,757
A Hat in Time - 7,312
Yooka-Laylee - 6,508
Spyro Reignited - 4,198
Crash Nsane Trilogy - 3,755
Sonic Forces - 2,058
Sonic Generations - 1,686
Crash 4 - 454 (Launched much later, originally battle.net exclusive)
Sonic Lost World - 252
Sonic Colors Ultimate - 90

What were you expecting?

Even ignoring that 3d platformers are an underperforming genre on PC compared to Consoles these numbers are still reasonable in comparison to GoW for example. GoW sold over 20m on PS4, 70k peak on Steam. Ratchet games typically sell 2-4m lifetime on PlayStation consoles, so why would it's peak be anywhere close to titles like GoW, Horizon or Spider-man.
So basically...
Rift Apart had the #2 best launch in its genre on PC?

Doesn't speak to how good the game is. Some games attract more or less media attention. Some are also more of what the PC base likes. Imagine if a Bloodborne poet happened? That would probably break records for Sony

It looks like a 3D platformer but it’s actually more of a 3rd person shooter. But most people probably think it’s a platformer. The platforming that’s in it is very simplistic and is secondary to the combat; it’s the shooting that’s the main gameplay mechanic. And it’s a great shooter - very fun on higher difficulties. I wish Insomniac would make a non-cartoony 3rd person shooter because this game shows they could make a really good one.

Pc gamers port begging everywhere, when it comes to buying they are nowhere to be seen,

It's a fun one and done game for sure, but you mean to tell me that PC players aren't going crazy over a two year old port that's $50 and has tech issues? Say it ain't so.

High price for a genre thats known for being cheap and running on potatoes, not to mention it generally isn't considered to be a very good rogueli(k)(t)e. Also, its a rather average number for this type of game, its really only losing to the rogue big boys like Hades and Risk of Rain 2.

Ratchet peaked with it's very first game anyways ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯ If they want my money they need a new hd port of the 4 (good) ps2 games, fix all the glitches they never bothered fixing in the ps3/vita ports.

Yeah, Sony releasing duds on PC like Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank.

WHAT
Uncharted is a game that came out 7 years ago and has been available for free on PlayStation as well. None of the previous games are available on PC either. Ratchet and Clank is a 2 year old platformer that has never had sales numbers like the big PlayStation franchises. It's also been free on PlayStation.

If Sony want larger sales then either reduce the gap or do franchises that are popular on PC like Demon Souls.

Wasn't it established that concurrent players aren't a reliable metric? I vaguely recall Sony confirming that Uncharted 4 did well on PC despite low concurrent players.

You remember wrong. It underperformed. It didn’t even make the Best of Steam 2022 Bronze list.

Also, people who cry about open-world and cinematic-driven games will cry for a long time. Look at the top-sellers. When Sony does try different stuff, you ignore it and keep buying the same shit over and over again. No wonder they keep churning out those games; that's what people want.

GT7, Demon Souls and Bloodborne would do very well on PC.

A PC release of Dreams even made much more sense than a Sackboy port, but alas.

It’s a lttp release so what are people expecting?
Pretty sure there are stats showing that late releases always have less hype. Plus, there were early reports that the game needed patches.

Its because its expensive and a bad roguelite. You can get Risk of Rain 2 or Deep Rock Galactic for a fraction of the price they ask.

These 100 dollar 12-hour linear games Sony fans love are just not PC gamer's cup of tea

Just look at the Most Played Steam games

Its all Live Service games

Which is why I find it funny every time someone hates on Jim Ryan for trying to branch out Sony's horribly repetitive First Party output

Yeah, even on PS5 it didnt sell all that well. Sold a million worldwide in a month and then dropped out of all charts. It was not in NPD's top 20 that year. Outsold by smash hits like Back4Blood and Mortal Kombat 2019.

the game was just a gigantic waste of time for everyone. Ratchet is a dying franchise and insomniac shouldve just focused their entire efforts on making spiderman 2 the biggest leap possible.

With that said, pc gamers dont seem to care about these sony exclusives. these are really bad numbers for everything other than maybe gow, horizon and spiderman. maybe day one they will be better. it's clear now that tlou, uncharted, returnal, ratchet, sackboy just dont have the same market they do on consoles. They need to realize that pc gaming is a different market and focus on releasing just wrpgs/lite rpgs like gow and horizon, or souls like games. BB and Demon Souls should do much better. on par with horizon and gow.

I wonder what nixxes is doing next. im guessing spiderman 2 will be ported within months because clearly this 2-3 year delay is not working.

Well platformers aren't very big on PC and I'm pretty sure more and more people are hesitant to pay full 60 bucks for a possibly another broken port.

Like most of these ports I expect them to be great Steam sale bait. If you wanted these so badly you would have already bought and played it on the PS5.

I wonder what would happen if they had a simultaneous PC and console release. Tanked console sales but boosted game sales?

It’ll be interesting to see what happens with Starfield. Forza Horizon 5 had 80,745 concurrent users on Steam but Gamepass is much bigger now and I’m thinking we’ll see that affecting sales, 30fps on console could help Steam sales a bit though.
