[PC Gamer] Blizzard is delisting the OG Warcrafts from GOG, but GOG says it's gonna preserve them forever anyway, hands out a discount

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Can't sell your cheap, Chinese mobile game-looking garbage if people still have the originals. Kind of an expected move, but completely shitty nonetheless.

If you don't have them already, buy these. Shame we'll probably never see GOG re-releases of Starcraft, Warcraft III, and Diablo II, but it is what it is.

How do we reconcile this situation and say it is good yet when other threads come up we give companies complete IP authority and control on what people can and can't do with software?

GOG is a Privateer sailing the seas
Blizzard is a old man yelling at clouds.

As much as I love Nintendo they are the worst at this. But as a wise lady once said

"The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers."

It is a futile exercise no matter how many lawyers you have.

I mean, it's pretty simple: Modern Blizzard is shit. It's a pack of talentless hacks dressed up as what used to be a great studio. Nintendo can be obnoxious, but they still deliver a solid product. Blizzard takes the old thing you liked, ruins it, gates it behind a completely anti-consumer platform for no good reason, and then tries to memory hole the original ( remember when they tried to nuke the retail version of Warcraft III with one of the patches after Reforged came out?) Even at their worst, Nintendo's nowhere near that level.

does Microsoft have any games on GOG? or is it just the remnants of stuff from the ABK acquisition which obviously they seem to be pulling from the store now that contracts are likely expiring

The Blizzard version of Warcraft I runs in DosBox and they didn't even bother to make it full screen.

I had to edit the config file.

It's never good when delistings happen but classic WC1 and 2 play like ass nowadays. Controls are abysmal. You can also toggle the new remastered versions back to the original graphics so it's not a big loss honestly.

What annoyed me with the Warcraft 1 Remaster is that they took out the animations on the briefings. The remaster of Warcraft 2 is pretty good though.

Warcraft 1 and 2 will leave GOG this December 13, exactly one month after Blizzard surprise-dropped its remasters of the games, but if you already own the games—or buy them before the 13th—you won't lose access. GOG is actually launching a discount code, MakeWarcraftLiveForever, that you can use to knock $2 (£1.50) off the Warcraft 1 and 2 bundle if you pick it up before D-Day (the D is for delisting).

There are a couple of wrinkles, though. One, Blizzard also sells the OG Warcrafts on Battle.net, and there's no word yet about whether they're also being delisted there. I've reached out to ask about that, and I'll update if I hear back. Even if Blizzard does keep selling them, though, there are some differences between the Battle.net versions and GOG's. For instance, the GOG version of Warcraft 1 uses an internal config tool to make multiplayer connection a little easier, while GOG's Warcraft 2 comes with a new DXWrapper that tries to capture the game's original presentation on modern resolutions.

Except they’re visually stretched horizontally, thus not maintaining the correct aspect ratio.
